USCHO Music: From Queen to The Beatles to Lady Gaga

I never knew that title of that song until now. It’s popped up in a number of movies over the years, but I think its radio run ended before I got into music.

My gf in 9th grade introduced me to them, and back then it wasn't uncommon for 1st Ave, 7th St Entry, The Fine Line, The Caboose, The 400, CC Club, The Uptown and others to have all-age concerts. Even in my mid-teens my parents would let me go as long so long as we drove to Minneapolis via Minnetonka Blvd until it becomes (Lake Street? Wow it's been so long since I did that route I forget) and as long as I had at least one person with me that they knew.

Even better is that when concerts let out they always gave comp tickets to future shows, some of which allowed me to see R.E.M., Husker Du, Echo & The Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, The Church, and others for free before or just as they were breaking.

We practically has a spot in 7th St. Entry that was named after us.

Jesus, they have been together 34 years, they wrote the last great rock and roll song before the genre died, in 1993, and they made their debut in 2024?

How many thousands of crap bands have had late night slots in that time?

Letterman did a pretty good job with his musical guests, but yeah the fact it was 2024 not 1994 is why it was so notable.

Last night the Minnesota orchestra had its grand piano spectacular.

Good lord did they deliver.

they commissioned an eight-handed arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue and not only did it not suck, it improved the experience of the song. All four pianists and leads throughout the song it was woven together masterfully.

I've seen RiB performed live three times and each is kind of special:
1. The first time was at a camp in NY where one of the fellow campers performed it. He went on to make Chasing Ice and Chasing Coral.
2. At TCF Bank Stadium during halftime in a monsoon-like downpour.
3. Eight-handed at the MN Orchestra.

Saw Joe Bonamassa last week, Beach Boys, the Mike Love version last night. I've seen Bonamassa enough to know he was going be great, the band is awesome.
The Beach Boys were fun, obviously not much left from the original band but they were on point except Loves voice :) First they rolled out the Surf Music, the Car scene Music and then everything else. Was at a small outdoor venue I'd never heard of, www.snowpond.org , set in a natural bowl on a lake. Will definitely go back if their is a show I'd like to see. Melissa Etheridge and Indigo girls playing there next and its sold out.

I’m envious of the music experience many of you have had

Mrs burd an I and our 3 30-something daughters are having a retreat in eastern TN in 3 weeks, along with their 3 partners. Looking forward to some Blue Ridge hiking, maybe a bluegrass joint one night and 5 days of hanging out. I was surfing YouTube music vids last week and it implanted the idea of each person submitting a number of music vids or recordings and hanging out together one evening and randomly play our selections. The Airbnb has a small video theater room big enough for it. I’m old, but they grew up on different stuff and have fairly widely varying tastes as it is. Add the young men, one of which is Korean, one is half Ghanaian/half Delta native from Nola, and one who plays his acoustic guitar, so the music will be wide ranging. 60s Neil Young and Hendrix, electronic stuff, Muddy Waters . . . Everybody is really taking to the idea, and it’s become a part of the retreat I’m most looking forward to.

same with food. The Nola daughter has turned into a foodie, and one manages a medallion restaurant in Chicago. Her bf is a chef. It will be creative but more farm-to- table style, and we always have fun cooking, eating, and drinking together. This music thing, though, might be really nice.

we probably have room for you and your wide range of tastes

That sounds like a fantastic trip especially spending with the kids. I never wished for our kids to grow up fast ( you can never get that time back) but our time together now with them as young adults is priceless.

Our youngest is doing 1 semester this fall in Seoul and we will visit him there this August, then he will come here to the Philippines for a few days on a short break.

Then for Christmas/New Years we all will meet the eldest in Bangkok for a few weeks. Spending time with them is truly the highlight of the year. We feel so fortunate to have both grown up in households where family mattered and that trickle-down is paying dividends.

Enjoy your time with the family. There imho nothing better.

TIL the "West End" of West End Blues refers to the westernmost point of Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana. It was the last stop on the trolley line from New Orleans and a big resort:

The song was written in the 1920s by King Oliver, first recorded by him in January 1928 (the link text is incorrect), and then a few months later in June the definitive recording (linked above) was made by Louie Armstrong.

Saw Rancid, Smashing Pumpkins, and Green Day tonight. Great fucking show.

pumpkins played a bunch of hits, which, hell yes.

Green Day headlined for the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot. They played both in their entirety. Plus their new album.

I also learned that Billy wrote American idiot while walking around Lake Harriet in Minneapolis. Interesting.
