USCHO Music: From Queen to The Beatles to Lady Gaga

From Hype, which is a great doc that holds up well in most aspects, except the prediction that there would be "some great rock n' roll coming down the line."

There was, in fact, not much great rock n' roll to come. Not much of national prominence, anyway.

Well, national prominence is sort of the antithesis of great rock n' roll. If you and your neighbors on both side of your house like it, it's bland.

But there have been even some very good popular bands that have at least a 50% overlap with rock and roll since Courtney aired out Kurt:
  • Soundgarden
  • Alice in Chains
  • Pixies
  • Pulp
  • Flaming Lips
  • Fishbone
  • Sugarcubes /Bjork
  • Dream Theater
  • Muse
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Foo Fighters
  • Radiohead
  • The Strokes (for 2 albums)
  • Vampire Weekend (for 2 songs)
  • Killers
  • Ramstein
  • King Gizzard
  • Porcupine Tree
  • Gorillaz
  • Bikini Kill

For anyone here who enjoys thrash, heavy metal or Pink Floyd/Rush type of music, the bass player for Voivod is in a huge dispute with his ex-band mates over royalties. He (Jean Yves-Theirault aka “Blacky”) has sought to recoup lost $ by issuing alternate takes, unreleased songs etc. on vinyl for several albums including Dimension Hatross, Nothingface and Angel Rat. BOLO if you dig it, I picked 3 of LPs up at my local indie store

these versions will not be available online for streaming so vinyl is the only option while they last.

For the uninitiated here is the title track from the LP “Nothingface”

Friends!!! So some of you may be aware of a now-defunct band from Dallas called The Paper Chase. Their 2002 album “Young Bodies Heal Quickly, You Know” was issued last year on vinyl for the first time.

you may know lead singer/guitar hero Jon Congleton from producing St. Vincent records.

If you haven’t heard the above referenced LP check it out for guitar heroics and as a bonus a nice reference to the Mario Savio speech of yesteryear. (

I just listened to The Wall again, for the first time in a long while. It’s really exceptional, to put that many good songs together, telling a unified story, is just such a show of talent. It’d be nice if bands were able to put together concept albums like this these days - both artistically and financially able.

Roger Waters should have choked to death on a ham sandwich in 1978.

The song that won Eurovision is drivel but the performance with the spinny seesaw thingy was cool. Go watch the actual live TV feed first, then watch this.

Also: credit to the crew. Total set up time: 39 seconds.
