US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

According to the USA Hockey site the festival begins on the 27th, not the 26th: http://u18womensworlds.usahockey.com/news_article/show/318758?referrer_id=804107

Curious because at least six of these girls from Minnesota would otherwise be involved in very competitive high school Holiday Tournaments that begin on the 26th. Would they play with their high school team for that one day, or would they be wise to rest up so they're at their best for the Festival?

Seriously? "Gee, I think I will risk making the U18 team to play in ONE game in a HIGH SCHOOL tournament."

I don't know if they will be naming the U18 National team from this camp, but there are 28 attendees and only 21 (possibly 22) roster spots up for grabs. Aside from potential injury, these kids will be going through grueling on and off-ice testing and will need to be fully rested. I wouldn't even be out shopping this week, nor do anything more strenuous than opening presents tomorrow. Lots of stretching and hydrating.

I suspect you're right, Hux, but I'll be watching closely and will let you know if any of them do play on Thursday! :) For the tournaments as a whole Hopkins will be impacted the most, as they'll be missing three girls.

Did I here the interviewer call Gigi Marvin Gigi Margavin when he first introduced her?
Sounded like he stumbled on the name...but kinda sounded like his lips were just moving too fast for his brain.

Pretty sure they can handle it. Yolo.

Nevertheless...in the past many have been absent from their high school team roster during holiday tournament time, in favor of the national camp.

Well, yesterday they were tested in the gym and on ice, with numbers compared to those from the summer. I doubt anyone with half a brain is willing to risk not being 100% for morning testing because they were playing a meaningless game the night before.

'meaningless'.
I can't believe I'm saying this... but I'm with RStarr on this one. Why is the game meaningless because it's their high school team? Their high school team is their team and I'm guessing they are pretty devoted to playing for their school.

And since when is "I have to prepare to play hockey" an excuse to not play hockey?

Ha, for the first time since Denver, Ringo and TTT are...on the same page. (Ringo, we've missed Ya and hope you'll be able to make the F4 at Quinny).

Meaningless, because in the big picture of playing on the National team one high school game the day before you head to selection camp is pointless.

Why is it pointless? As I said, the camp is physically demanding on and off the ice. As I said, aside from needing to go in healthy, the players need to be well rested. So why decrease your level of preparedness one iota by playing in a game, or games, less than 24 hours before you are going to be tested? I've seen the testing. This isn't some patty cake, how high is your verticle reach, leap testing.

There is also the mental aspect. This isn't pond hockey where you pull off the boots and then pull on the skates and go out and run around and have a blast chasing a puck and talkin' smack with your friends until you can't feel your toes and then you head in and have some smores and hot cocoa.

The players that make the cut will be the ones who came in focused on the goal from the git go. The ones who are in game mode not when they are about to play, but the day before they drop the gear in the locker room. The ones who have been reviewing the coach's e-mail video's on what worked in Lake Placid, what didn't, and what changes will be made.

Ultimately it comes down to what is more important, playing in a few games for your high school in December or playing for Gold for your country in March.

They are holiday tournament games that don't affect any teams conference standings. I suppose they appear in the teams overall record...may or may not affect the rankings or section seeds...not real sure. Any impact on section seeding would be the only real "meaning" if that were in fact the case. I believe overall records are considered for section seeding. Have to defer to others on that. In any case I'd bet that any player leaving her team during their holiday tournament schedule is indeed conflicted with the circumstances. It would be an interesting question to ask of a player who's been through the experience. Another guess would be high school teammates are supportive.

...it's high school hockey...so parents of teammates could be another matter altogether.

Brooky, the games do certainly count in a team's overall record but more importantly they very well could impact a team's seeding in sections, especially for games between teams that are in the same section. And I agree that most if not all players feel conflicted about missing a game with their teammates, often girls who they've played with while growing up, especially in a tournament setting where players and teams take winning seriously. I'm pretty sure that none of these players consider these games to be "meaningless".

But I do agree with Hux that, having been selected to participate in a camp where you want to be at your very best, these players would see and understand the bigger picture...which means to do what they need to do to maximize their chance of representing their country in March, and hopefully beyond that when they age out of U18.

P.S. Looking at the stats of the Thursday games involving Hopkins, Minnetonka and Edina it appears that all five players did exactly that as they did not show up in either the scoring or penalty detail. And ironically, the team that I thought would be impacted the most - Hopkins, with three key players missing - ended up winning their tournament, while Minnetonka and Edina (missing just one player each) did not.

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

I had a chance to go to Blaine yesterday and watch the U-18 hopefuls practice in the morning and then stayed to watch the team play the Minnesota Whitecaps last night. A great game - Whitecaps won 4-3 in OT, but a few players really stuck out for the USA U-18's. I thought Taylar Cianfirano, Baylee Wellhausen, and Nina Rodgers looked really good up front and Grace Bizal did well on defense to name a few. It looks like the coach is sitting a forward line and a couple of defensemen each game. I believe the team plays the Whitecaps tonight as well as tomorrow morning. Will be interesting to see what decisions the coaching staff makes regarding the final roster...
