Re: Unrest in Egypt

Glad I was able to live there when I could - but we have friends still there and my wife and I had talked last year about visiting them in November. Not sure that's now going to happen. :(

Folding like a Walmart tent in a Sahara sandstorm?

Libya declared an immediate halt to military action on anti-government forces Friday in an attempt to avoid international military intervention after the U.N. authorized a no-fly zone and "all necessary measures" to protect the Libyan people.

Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa said Friday that the cease-fire is meant to "take the country back to safety and security for all Libyans."

...Earlier Friday, Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi's said "hell" awaited anyone who attacked the country, as the international community prepared for intervention, state TV reported.

Apparently now the government has broken the ceasefire and started attacking, because that won't get anyone who was still on the fence squarely on the rebel's side...

Re: Unrest in Egypt

It's not like any sane person would trust Ghadafi to actually do a ceasefire if he says he will.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

We need to stay out of the Libyan situation. Period. No good will come to the US if our men and women start dying on their soil too.

seems to me that promises of 'I'll be good now' have the effect of screwing up any UN solidarity on these issues. It gives the wishy-washy an excuse to put the brakes on any action.

True. If anyone plays policeman there, with a no-fly zone or whatever, it should be first and foremost the Europeans and Arabs. "Should be" being the key words

The UN should stay out of it too. These civil wars are nothing but quagmires. I know a lot of evil things happen in these civil wars, but that is the nature of mankind. It just needs to get over quickly so the people of Libya and the world can move on. Foreign intervention will just drag it out.

It may drag out for a good while, regardless of intervention. Even barring intervention, Ghadafi will have a tough time pacifying Benghazi, even if he takes out Tobruk and other eastern cities. Benghazi is a large enough city that his relatively small forces can't control it if it doesn't want them to control it. Part of this is longstanding regional rivalries, with eastern and western Libya being longtime rivals. Agreed that in general intervening in civil wars just gets more folks involved in a big mess and it's just the way mankind does things sometimes, UN or no UN or whoever.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Per the BBC, the French claim to have started flying sorties over Libya.

NPR said that the UN resolution wasn't just a no fly zone. The instructions were "protect Benghazi." Their correspondent said that amounted to carte blanche (French intentional) to act against Qadaffi's supporters.

And so, it begins.

obviously its not that garbage, its the lack of anything resembling leadership thats frustrating. he doesnt even have anb opinion on what leadership is.

I think its obvious, Obama doesn't want the the US outfront in this blockade. Let someone else be the face of the no fly zone, like France for instance. They got planes, let'em go shoot down some Libyan Migs or take out some land based defenses. They have Cruise missiles also, let them launch their missiles at Libya

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Let the Europeans police this. We are still overextended which at this point is all Obama's fault.

Well, that's not happening.

The U.S. Navy fired the first U.S. Tomahawk cruise missiles against Libyan leader's Muammar al-Qaddafi's air defenses Saturday.

The Pentagon says 112 missiles have been launched from U.S. and British ships in the Mediterranean, hitting more than 20 Libyan targets along the Mediterranean coastline.
