Unrest in Egypt

Re: Unrest in Egypt

The NY Times reports the Obama admin is now discussing a proposal w/ Egyptian officials that would remove Mubarak immediately

What a coup this would be for Obama.

It looks like there are increased supplies, hospitals and army protection of protesters. This is another signal that Mubarak's grip may be slipping.

Edit: Just heard something interesting. AJ says that American foriegn aid does not go to the Egyptian govt, but rather to the Egyptian military. If true, that explains the top general being in the US at the time of the riots...and the oddly nuetral and somewhat positive role of the military in all this.

Hmmm

Looks like a day's worth of posts are gone.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Yeah, just got on to check the latest, and see that everything is gone. Saw the sticky at the top of the forum saying that there was a crash.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

#Egypt protesters, Army tanks in standoff at Cairo's Tahrir Square.
Standoff. Egyptian Army tanks trying to push thru barricade into Tahrir Square. Opposition form human chain to stop them

So of course MSNBC is asking which big screen TV is best for the Super Bowl and CNN is talking about the Year of the Rabbit...

Update
@mtawfeeqCNN: The German diplomat who said there was an assassination attempt against Egypt's vice president has retracted his comments.

A pipeline in eastern Egypt has exploded. The government says it was terrorists.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Gamal Mubarak (son) resigns as head of NDP ruling party.

Edit:
Head of NDP was either Gamal or Hosni, accounts differ. Either way, Hosni is still president in Egypt.

The "executive committee" of the NDP all resigned. The street is... unimpressed.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

This is like watching an episode of Pawn Stars.

Seller: I want $10,000
Rick: $1,000
Seller: $7,500?
Rick: $1,000
Seller: $6,000?
Rick: $1,000
Seller: $5,000?
Rick: $1,000
etc.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Been kind of quiet here lately.

They seem to have settled into a siege. Even AJE is running other coverage and only checking in from time to time.

Opinion piece: the revolution not as fundamentally religious, but economic, and the threat of a radical regime not in the toppling of the authoritarian state, but in dawdling before accepting the change (thus giving the fringe room to hijack the state).

You noticed that too? Hmmmm...
I'd love some honest assessment as to the likelihood of the Muslim Brotherhood taking over should Mubarak be deposed, especially from the Wise Council of USCHO Posters. Or are we trying to figure out where the Gophers rate in the PWR today? ;)

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Interesting Story on AJE about the new Egyptian VP, Omar Suleiman. It basically says that all goverment repression of the Egyptian people went through him. It also suggests that he was the actual torturer that coerced confessions out of alledged Al-Queda prisoners sent by the US government to Egypt.

There is no sugestion about it, he was the guy.

I don't forsee the Egyptian Intellectuals making the same mistake the Iranians did. I would say the chances are 1 in 4 that Muslim Brotherhood gets power and goes Ayatollah on the people's arses.

These things have a way of getting out of hand, but I'd guess the odds of a US-backed strongman are far greater than some sort of theocratic anti-western state. We have made quite an investment there.

Aint nothin' compared to Saudi, though. Those people are sowed (edit: sewed. Alright, alright...) up tight until the last drop is gone -- fifteen minutes after that it's anybody's ballgame.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

You've been waiting years for the opportunity to use that phrase.

It does have a nice ring to it :)

My uncle just read a book about the revolution in Iran...I forget the name but it was written by the wife of one of the guys involved and he has apparently been depressed ever since because they let the Ayatollah steal their revolt. I plan to read it soon.

If a theocratic leader took power in Egypt I would hate to see the outcome for the people. They are poor as dirt now and that is WITH all the tourism dollars, if those dry up there will be zero middle class or even an upper level of poverty...it will just be full on third world.
