Re: Unrest in Egypt

I'm taking a nap. Maybe when I get up Mubarak will be gone. Odds?

Re: Unrest in Egypt

The odds are better that there will be another hundred dead, I'm afraid.

Ya, if Mubarak hasn't stepped down by now...why would he step down at all? I think unless the protests slowly dwindle, I don't think the ending will be quiet.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

A guy can dream, right?

Mubarak told ABC News he would like to resign, but fears the vacuum that would ensue. Step aside, let your new VP take over until the elections. Those can be moved up to this summer. As I've said, he has a legacy that he can be proud of but what's happening now ruins that. He needs to get out.

Meanwhile...

aggression also in aswan, asiut and luxor today. friend there told me. no one there to cover the stories.
moment of tension. ppl whistle to warn thugs are coming. Everyone rushes to protect entrances. They prepare for an attack but none comes yet
Reporter on @AJEnglish says it became nearly impossible to perform her job cuz thugs made the atmosphere extremely tense & scary
LPC: Eyewitness to arrest and beating. By: Mamdouh Hamza, Chairman of Hamza Associates (Google if don't know) Audio uploading now.
5 are pulled from offices, beaten and taken into custody. Eyewitness by Chairman of Hamza Associates

Edit:
Tweets from #Tahrir say Mubarak govt set to launch another onslaught against pro-democracy movement.
Thank you for following another day of Al Jazeera's live blogging- we continue on a new post for February 4 here http://aje.me/gRmSnf

Re: Unrest in Egypt

The latest
Like our coverage from #Egypt? Think we should be shown on US TV? It's time to #DemandAlJazeera http://aje.me/demandAJ
it looks like our protesters in tahrir are protecting our army from Mubarak's thugs
I know u ppl will think I am exagerating but Tahrir square is the safest place in cairo right now! And it is cozy :)
The toughest attacks were yesterday and still failed. Everything else today fades in comparison. We're doing great, really.
Aljazeera live shot of Tahrir had to be pulled as it was putting our lives at risk. Will be back up as soon as its safe
I've just walked around Tahrir. No trucks shipping thugs, no people getting slaughtered, and the few thugs on the bridge are bored.
Former Nile TV host Shahira Amin tells the BBC why she quit her job: "We were not allowed to report on what was happening in Tahrir Square."
Quiet in many parts of the city. At home and in Tahrir, many are sleeping, trying to get rest before tomorrow's protests

Sounds like the protest will begin tomorrow morning after morning prayers.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

The NYT reports that the US is working behind the scenes to broker a deal to get Mubarak to step down.
The UN has cleared out:
The BBC's Barbara Plett reports on the UN's decision to pull its staff out of Egypt: "The UN has a range of humanitarian and cultural agencies based in Egypt. There've been no attacks on them, but hundreds of non essential staff members and their families have been flown to Cyprus. UN spokesmen said the security situation in Cairo was deemed volatile and unstable; they also said technical problems - such as the government blocking the internet - had made it difficult to work.

It is now just after 4AM in Cairo. Lots of people are still in the Square. There seem to be probing attacks every so often, but nothing serious.

Hopefully the US networks will broadcast after midnight (7AM Cairo) as that is when the activity will pick up again.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Just got back from work a bit ago. Thanks everyone for all the updates. You guys are a better synopsis than surfing around to catch up!

Re: Unrest in Egypt

So question...Anderson Cooper is reporting from an "undisclosed location." How much of this is needed? Or how much of it is CNN playing up the "Anderson Cooper was attacked and is now underground" angle?

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Hasn't he been attacked twice now?

Last Night MSNBC had Brian Williams and Richard Engel reporting from the balcony of their hotel (I believe the Hilton). Anderson is decked out in tan jacket and pants, with a background so you cant figure out where he is. I mean, really? How much of this is needed. Im going to guess he is at the Hilton, just with a sheet across his balcony window.

Nightline on ABC is doing a one hour special on Egypt. Anampoour scored an interview with Mobaruks VP and even talked to the man himself.

Probably a little of both. Other networks are broadcasting openly, but some have been attacked, too. It doesn't do a whole lot of good for him to broadcast from a "secret location" with the shades drawn, because he can't see anything that is going on outside. All he has done for 2 hours is show us footage from yesterday. Then again, AJE has a blogger on and the host is trying real hard not to bust out laughing because the guy is (unintentionally) funny. If you listen to what he says, he makes sense, but how he gets there is a riot.

I havent checked out AJE yet tonight. I'll prob turn that on.
Plus Anderson, your skype, underground location broadcast isnt in 1080i and I have a lot of black empty boarder space.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

CNN switched to CNN International.

Now we're going back to Piers Morgan (allegedly). We're still watching CNNi though...

Ugh, there's Piers. FML

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Aw. I was really looking forward to some Piers Morgan interview skills. /sarcasm

I guess I'll watch Rachel Maddow, instead of listening to Fox News, ok Hannity in particular and have him find a way to blame this on Obama and the "liberal" media.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

CNN and MSNBC are repeats of earlier programs. BBC and AJE are rehashing earlier news stories as well. Dawn prayers were 30 minutes ago. The rally should be starting up...

The NY Times reports the Obama admin is now discussing a proposal w/ Egyptian officials that would remove Mubarak immediately
Our producer says there's a security build-up at Tahrir Square, troops in riot gear standing next to tanks http://aje.me/ajelive
Here is the insane video of police car running ppl over. Thanks irene! RT @irenefanous: http://youtu.be/gmqv6V7uHoI
