Unrest in Egypt

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Surreal presser from the PM saying Egypt's "heart is hurt" by the violence. "We are all traumatized and saddened by last night's attacks." "Your winnings sir?"

I'm surprised he hasn't blamed the protesters yet.
He says they have started dialogue with the opposition...that's a lie. The pro-Democracy protesters have said there will be no dialogue until Mubarak leaves.

He says his sons are in Tahrir Square. Sure they are.

Plans are for banks to reopen on Sunday.

Edit:
@omelhol has been arrested with her two daughters Shuhdan and Nadeen abushady at Hisham MubaraK law centre

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Tweet to the BBC:
#1334: Ahmed Rasheed in Cairo tells the BBC: "Two of my friends have been arrested - one is the blogger Sandmonkey. They were trying to get food and medical supplies. These thugs [supporters of Mubarak] are arresting people and delivering them to the secret police. I was at the protest last night and I got injured after a stone was thrown at my head. I'm going to go back today and get food and medical supplies, if I don't get arrested." Sandmonkey's blog appears to have been suspended.

Injured protesters are reported to be refusing the help of state-run ambulances because they fear they are being driven to police HQ. Stay classy, authoritarian regime.

But remember, we have to keep these guys in power because, um, Israel and bomb Iran!!!11!...?

Nice to see he found a new job.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

I can't believe the way the American news teams are handling this. At midnight everything stopped.

The MSNBC broadcast went to a replay of the Rachel Maddow Show, where they just replayed the last two hours of coverage. Why? All you were doing was showing a webcam, it can't be that hard to leave it up.

Go to CNN, they have a replay of some guy's show from 9PM.

Ok, maybe Headline News, since this Egypt thing is actually a headline. lol jk Nancy Grace is on.

Last resort: Fox. Who knows though, there's been a few times where they've been on top of things when the others weren't. Well, this was not one of those times. Instead, I got to see Sean Hannity be incredibly intolerant towards a Sharia Law judge from Britain, then talk over him during the judge's response and cut to commercial before the judge actually got an audible reply in.

Come on people, a country is on fire, the protesters are (well maybe now it's were) the ones being civil, the government is sending out gangs to destroy the protesters and news media are being attacked just for being there. Is it so hard to just put up a webcam shot and put some noob intern out there to commentate? This isn't the freakin' Olympics, you can't just tape delay.

Straight news doesn't make profits. Having talking heads spew inaccurate and inane commentary causing uproar and disgust creates viewers, and ad revenue.

Is AJE's website not working for anyone else? Or is it just my corporate firewall throwing back a "The server at english.aljazeera.net is taking too long to respond." error?

LinkTV (Channel 375 on DirecTV) had a live feed of AJE after midnight. No one else I saw had anything.

The AJE feed will not load and BBC is currently airing recorded reports. LinkTV has a news report. The US Networks are covering Obama's speech at the Prayer Breakfast...is anyone broadcasting live from the Square?

BBC is currently showing a live reporter from Alexandria: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12307698

The PM's spin was amazing. "We will investigate and see who was responsible." It reminded me of the Gilbert and Sullivan sequence where the judge, prosecutor and defendant are all the same person so he takes turns cross-examining himself and objecting.

CNN's the most disappointing, because while they did basically shut down their newsroom over night, they used to just turn over the channel to CNN International from like 1am to 6am.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

The latest from Twitter
@Sandmonkey's been released, he's on his way home. His car has been destroyed and he and friends were beaten.
Al Jazeera breaking: Three Al Jazeera journalists arrested in Egypt
Pro-democracy protesters just drove Mubarak crowd completely from the 6th October overpasses. Amazing scene

... of which Western Media will never have seen or have shared with this hemisphere.

Our our attention spans so short that the news media gives up on a developing story because "it's boring?" or because this doesn't involve Americans?

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Earlier in this thread it was mentioned that Egypt will be Al Jazeera's coming out party, just as the Gulf War was CNN's. It looks to me like that is a wrong assessment, it sure looks like this is Twitter's coming out party as a source of real-time news.

Twitter had a big moment in Iran last year.

AJE is back. APC heavy gunfire now.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

RT @NickKristof: Small jail set up in #Tahrir for thugs and infiltrators with weapons. Best organization I've seen in egypt.
AlJaz Breaking: Government freeze assets, and travel ban. Including former Interior Minister who ordered police off streets Friday.

The AJE website should be back up.

Edit:
BREAKING: thugs into hilton hotel.
Aljaz BREAKING. heavy gunfire in another part of the city.

5 minutes until the curfew...

LPC: Detail. We were on the phone with a journalist describing thugs harassing journalists exiting Hilton. She gave this info. Call ended.
A Friend of mine who is in Tahrir Square asked to relate the following message: The police & thugs are trying to corrupt the neighbourhood watches by sexually harassing people, throwing food & supplies down the Nile & arresting many people including women. I am begging you to spread the message & alert your friends.
Pls tell journos you know not to go to Hilton Ramses.
LPC with Mohammed El Waffify (film director) in the square: Individuals observed on roof of Ramses.
Update on Hilton. Follow up confirms thugs at the door 'ATTEMPTING' to break in, but UNCONFIRMED they are inside.

It's not Snowmaggedon 2011 Part Two: Deep Freeze Boogaloo. Much more easier to have the talking heads talking to one of their other schmucks standing outside telling the sheeple just how cold it is and how much snow they got there. It's like they think that there's a fresh wave of people crawling out from under a rock every 15 minutes. WE KNOW IT'S FARKING COLD OUT YOU MORONS!!! Next news story!!

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Swe TV's missing corresp Bert Sundström last seen outside Marriot
Cairo Hilton hotel confiscating journos' cameras on behalf of regime! So much for @HiltonOnline brand, I'm never staying there again!
Hearing from @MuhamedSabry that Amnesty Intl rep in #Egypt detained. Any news?
RT @washingtonpost: Our #Cairo bureau chief and photographer have reportedly been arrested

We have heard from multiple witnesses that Leila Fadel, our Cairo bureau chief, and Linda Davidson, a photographer, were among two dozen journalists arrested this morning by the Egyptian Interior Ministry. We understand that they are safe but in custody and we have made urgent protests to Egyptian authorities in Cairo and Washington. We've advised the state department as well.

AJE anchor question: "What's the thing you do when you're losing the war? You shoot the messenger, don't you?"
Al Jazeera breaking: AFP: Foreigner dies in Meydan Tahrir
Yes its official that Amnesty Law HQ has been cleaned out by Mubarak Stasi Forces. Amnesty reports via Facebook.
On aje: Iraqis in #egypt fleeing home in search of safety. Who would have ever imagined

Meanwhile, from Algeria
Bouteflika is trying to pre-empt an uprising of his own by lifting the emergency laws on since 1992. Wait & see what ppl of #Algeria decides
