University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

We should know in a week or two if this was a four week "era" or whether it's going to be a whopping one season - this was a misplaced thread title

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

John Micheletto is interviewing for UMASS head coaching job.

Per USHR Michelletto is responsible for recruiting and the power play. So how did he get the intereview? Recruiting and power play are awful.

Recruiting isn't that bad other than the retreads but PP and PK is terrible. Especially last two years...hmmm...who was put on both two years ago???

I'll have to disagree with you on recruiting. I think it's actually been very good.

John is an interesting guy to talk to Seems very smart.. Soooooooo much better than Joey.
Best of luck to him. I think he would do a nice job .

Very good with our record? In the last two years there have been some decent players, but a good recuriter builds depth, and that depth is good players. We don't have that.

John is a terrfic man. A gentleman, however, in hockey sense we have lacked recruiting depth and a reasonable PP the last few years.

FYI, here's some info about the Sabres' development camp with a nice picture of Girgensons:

Hopefully, the team will know what they want to do with him shortly after this camp.

Sounds like Zemgus impressed the Sabres coaching staff at camp this week:

A decision from Zemgus could come as soon as tomorrow, per the twitter feed above

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

From an article on Tonawanda-news.com:

Center Zemgus Girgensons, the 14th overall pick last month, could decide as soon as today whether he signs with the Sabres or attends the University of Vermont, where he committed to play next season.
“I’ll try to decide tomorrow,” the 18-year-old said Thursday after scoring a nifty goal for the Blue Team in a 7-3 win over the Gold.
Regier added: “We’ll talk to him about his desire to turn pro. Really, it has to be his decision.”
Ruff thinks the 6-foot-1, 198-pound Latvian could be ready for the AHL.
“He already has a man body,” he said. “He’s strong enough to handle the heavy bodies down there.”

This doesn't sound good at all, particularly "We'll talk to him about his desire to turn pro." Uh oh, he has a desire to turn pro? Right now? As I've long feared, I don't think he'll ever suit up for UVM. And he's going to be making this decision in the midst of all the exhilaration and excitement of the Sabre's development camp--i.e., he's gonna be thinking "This is so great, what do I need college for?" It sounds like a decision is imminent and I don't think it'll be good.

Sadly I agree. First his USHL coach, and now the team's NHL coach is saying he's ready for the pros now. I had hoped to see him at the Gut this year.

Jim Connelly says we need some better luck. Yeah, that's a ****ing understatement. Oh well, instead of winning a bunch of games this season with flash and elan, maybe we can win a couple with grit and determination. This one's gonna leave a mark.....

I don't think you were gonna win a "bunch" of games in any possible way this season. "A couple" is more like it.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Certainly not a surprise. I had expected this would happen and I'm fine with it. In my opinion it's a better move for him than it is for Deluca to go to QMJHL. Frankly the loss of Deluca is much larger for the program because it is likely a three or four year loss as opposed to Girgensons. And Deluca is more of a prototypical college weapon. Girgensons was going to be one and done anyway barring injury and that would have been hanging over our head all year long. I also don't think he would have put up big numbers necessarily, I think he would have been a huge impact player in terms of two way play, punishing physical game, leadership, and certainly some nice points, but he was not going to score the way Deluca probably would have.

But still a HUGE loss to the team for the coming season. Now they have a scholarship that will essentially go to waste this season - likely spread among some other guys but not an addition to the product on the ice.

I still think the team will be better than last year but this is unfortunate.

In terms of bad luck, it's not really luck, they recruited guys that we really good and therefore really sought after. The trick is they need to recruit more of these each year to increase the odds that some stick. Or they need to go with small guys that are not going to get a look at the pros early on (although that did not work with Deluca because he was LIGHTING IT UP to a massive degree)

Bad luck was all of last years injuries. They are due fewer injuries and some good bounces this coming season. But they have to make the bounces and work hard to avoid the injuries.

Hopefully some other kids steps up and has a bigger year to close the gap. There is still no reason they can't play a UML type game and be much better.

Can we start a new thread now with a new title please. I knew that was going to jinx us with Girgensons
