University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Not sure about this kid from BU. his numbers have taken a huge dive in last two years, prior to that he was lighting it up. mediocre numbers in USHL usually do not translate to much in D1.
True, but on the other hand, he might come in here on a mission, feeling he has something to prove. I'm sure he'd like nothing more than to put up good numbers in order to show BU made a mistake.

I'm pretty sure it's Union, Princeton, and St. Cloud. I believe we play Union and Princeton.

I believe it is Merrimack instead of St. Cloud and Merrimack will play Union and Princeton in the 4PM games. Merrimack then returns to Burlington the next weekend for a league game so they play 3 in a row on Gutterson ice. There goes your home ice advantage for a Hockey East game.

I'm sorry but if this BU kid is that good then he would have put up better numbers in the USHL. If "motivation" causes him to be materially better then he is not putting in enough effort already on a day to day basis. That is just wishful thinking that he will "step it up" because he is motivated by BU pushing him off a year and accelerating somebody else.

I hope he is a pleasant surprise and that BU regrets their move but I'm sure they made the decision knowing the likely ramifications and were comfortable with the decision they made. Having said that, I do hope he is above our average talent and effort level from last year so the Cats step up their game via this recruiting class.

We'll have to agree to disagree. This isn't a novel idea--stuff like this motivates people all the time. I'm not saying motivation is going to suddenly make him a new player. I just think there may be a little extra incentive to say "I told you so." We shall see.

Grasping at straws. If the young hockey player isn't motivated by the many other more important things that should be motivating him, he's likely a bum.

Milo didn't seem to get magically amazing at hockey once he left Cornell. McCarthy doesn't seem to be any better after BC wouldn't accelerate him and he showed up at UVM.

He does seem motivated whenever he plays BC thou....4 goals & 2 assists in 6 reg season games.

Actually Milo's numbers were much better at UVM then at Cornell and McCarthy has been decent.

Milo did put up better numbers then at Cornell, sometimes its not just hockey, its fitting in and feeling more comfortable, in the surrounding. Maybe school was actually tougher at Cornell than UVM (we all know that is true). So there is more to it. I hear it was really his attitude with teammates.

As for McCarthy, your wrong there. He has put up decent numbers. Puts up huge numbers against better teams. Look at him vs. BU, Maine, Minn, BC. So there are motivation issues and perhaps he needs to bring it every game as he does vs. those teams. He also played hurt for a part of his sophomore year. I have heard McCarthy has a great attitude unlike Milo. Also, it wasnt BC wouldn't accelerate him, they couldn't accelerate him.

I don't know this too be true after becoming familiar with some of the posters on this board. Well school might have been tougher, but only because they are ummmm challenged.

So true... Milo would never have been selected as a captain.

And considering McCarthy missed almost all of last year that shows the character of McCarthy to earn a letter after last year.

Cut from the USCHO draft preview

Finally some good news this offseason

Vermont recruit Zemgus Girgensons, who grew up in Latvia but came to the U.S. to play junior hockey, is ranked 18th by the CSB and 20th by ISS. Like Trouba, he also was drafted by a Canadian Hockey League club — Kelowna of the Western Hockey League. But that team’s aggressive targeting of the 18 year old has rubbed him the wrong way, according to published reports, likely securing his road to Vermont.

At 6-foot-1 and 201 pounds, he’s already filled out and that could work to his advantage when teams are considering first-round talent.

Let's hope so!

It's better for college hockey overall for him to show up at UVM, so as a Lowell fan, I hope he does as well.
Nice post. It's good to know there's a Lowell fan capable of this sort of reasoning. ;)

Can't Sneddon isn't doing best to get Girgensons to UVM. He's hanging out with the fam at the draft!

Are the sabers a college friendly team?

I believe first round pick Thomas Vanek played two years at Minnesota before signing with Buffalo.
