UND is definitely a Frozen Four team. Probably going to lose to BC again, but a Frozen Four team anyways...:D

Northeastern lost too much to make the tournament this year.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

30 days and counting until the season opener exhibition against Manitoba. :)

The Sioux have a very tough opening schedule after that.
Roadtrip to Alaska for UAA/UAF.
Then series at BSU to open their rink.
Road series at Maine.
First home series against DU.
Duluth at home.
And then travel to UW.

Ouch. A very tough first 12 games.

If they come out of that with a good record we'll know we have a serious team.

What will we consider a "good record"? I think 8-9 wins in that first stretch would be a good sign. Anything less than 7 will be cause for concern...

Also, the presale for North Dakota home tickets starts Thursday. If ANYONE has the presale code for me I would be very grateful. I'm flying back to North Dakota for the Denver series and would like to make sure that I get tickets as early as possible.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

It appears that we have a new recruited player:

BREAKING NEWS: U.S. Under-17 team forward Miles Koules, who played at Shattuck for the previous three seasons, has committed to UND. Koules' father, Oren, is the former part owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning and producer of the Saw movies. Check the blog and website later for more info, including quotes from the Koules.

Welcome aboard, Miles! With him being on the U17 team, I would guess the earliest that we would see him at UND would be 2012 or 2013.

Here are the stats from last season at SSM:
http://ssmsports.org/hockey/teams/2009-2010/boys/u16/boys-u16-stats

His 58pts put him 2nd on the team in scoring.
He's a California kid!

Herald article on Koules' commitment:

http://www.grandforksherald.com/event/article/id/174412/

Koules said that UND was his only college visit.

“It was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen,” Koules said. “Everything about it blew me away, from the rink to the way the Fighting Sioux go about their business. It was perfect for me. I didn’t have any reason to take any other visits.”

I think 8 or 9 wins would be a great start to the season, but I won't be too concerned about a win or two fewer. That fits into the standard pattern for the last several years. But it would be nice to see a record better than just around .500 before Christmas. When was the last time that happened, '03-'04?

Just to look at it historically, here are our first half records from our championship years...

1999-2000: 14-3-1
1996-1997: 12-4-2
1986-1987: 16-6-0 (finished the year an impressive 24-2-0)
1981-1982: 15-7-0
1979-1980: 12-4-0
1962-1963: 7-2-0 (in both '63 and '59, season didn't start until Thanksgiving)
1958-1959: 5-3-2

Now, compare that with our last 10 years...

2009-2010: 9-6-3
2008-2009: 9-9-1
2007-2008: 9-7-1
2006-2007: 9-10-1
2005-2006: 13-8-1
2004-2005: 13-7-2
2003-2004: 13-2-0
2002-2003: 18-1-1
2001-2002: 9-9-1
2000-2001: 14-4-4

I'd like to think we could put up a decent record in the first half this year with the quality of team that we have. We play 21 games in the first half of the season, and I would think 15-16+ wins in the first half of the year would be a great start, 12-14 would be acceptable, and anything less than 11 would be a disappointment.

definitely cannot sleep on any of those teams. Maine will have a decent season, Bemidji will be good as usual, and DU is the Sioux's biggest rival for sure. Coming out of this stretch above .500 would be a major accomplishment, and 9 wins or more would equal scary good.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Talk about sandbagging. Being overly doubtful in guessing the games, I still have 7-5. I wavered on two series (in the 7-5, I split the Alaskas and split the BSU series, where I should think sweep for UND). So, thinking normally, I have you at 9-3.

Tough schedule to be sure, but I think you guys are preparing for the flood a little early.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Can't wait to hear all the crying on here when Rocco bolts for the WHL!:D

It certainly is a possibility. But I'm not too concerned either way. If he bolts, then UND will just reload with another forward who is more committed to the program.

Why, will you cry should he decide to come to UND as expected next fall? :D
