University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

I haven't seen any UML hockey this season. Is it more of the same bruiser style and they are just running it better this year? Or did they learn to skate?

Now, now... Lowell has never been a goon squad, have they?

I might be a little biased, since:

1. Both my nephews from the North Shore went to UML, and are kicking fanny professionally.

2. I got to visit with Grant there briefly when Shawn was sick, but still behind the bench. Grant was so warm and friendly. I'm glad that I had that moment.

3. Never have I personally witnessed UML beat Maine, neither at the Tsongas, nor at the one game they played in Chelmsford, when by sheer luck I sat next to the oldest season ticket holders in the history of UML hockey. Great folks; we chatted non-stop all game long. And both Teddy Purcell and Ben Bishop were outstanding that night.

So, I'm hoping that the Ospreys make the NCAA's, but only after Maine sweeps them this weekend.

:p

They skate well.

Lowell’s power play is good, ranked 6th in the country(Maine is ranked 5th). Lowell’s shots against per game is ranked 6th in the country(Maine is ranked 1st). I think other areas Lowell is middle of the pack.

So Lowell plays good defense and capitalizes on power plays. Their leading scorer Buttazzoni is a freshman. They have another good freshman forward Delaney that is small and nifty similar to J. Nadeau.

Lowell’s last 5 games have been within 1 goal. They went 2-1-2 against Clarkson(PWR #19), BC(#PWR #1), BC(PWR #1), Michigan Tech(PWR #30), and Omaha(PWR #44). Their only loss was to BC in that stretch. So they are proving to be a tough scrappy hard to put away team.

Thank you for this Sparkee! I have zero reasons to dislike UML as much as I do. They just always seemed to be 2 inches taller and 15 lbs heavier than Maine

watched both games vs BC, similar to the excellent teams they had during the recent run. Just a tough team to play against as always. Bunch up at the blue line and always excellent between the pipes. HE 3 of top 6, 4 of top 8 and 6 of top 13 in PWR.

Chabrier is a guy who I think has immensely improved since he arrived at Maine. He was my personal pick for most improved of last season and he has continued to get better this year. A great piece to have on the blue line.

With all the players we have leaving at the end of the season, I'm most worried that Chabrier will end up signing a pro deal. I wouldn't blame him at all, but that would be a big loss.

For defensemen you aren’t as, or more, worried about Holt or Djuresevic? I think Chabrier is solid, and had a great weekend against Denver… but Holt and Djuresevic have outperformed him statistically. If you look on CHN stats and sort their stats using the CHIP column it gives the best indicator of performance. https://www.collegehockeynews.com/stats/team/Maine/25

Boija is a risk too. It is why I wouldn’t mind if they got Berzins some more game experience this season.

“It’s not a lack of chances, it’s not a lack of effort, it’s a lack of finish, and it’s a lack of finding that little extra around the net,” Barr said.

Which goes to what I've been saying, lack of finishers. Hopefully we see others besides Scott(hopefully Scott also) light it up this weekend. Going to be a tough series

Mostly pretty even period I think, I'm here at Tsongas about 5-6 rows behind the benches, though a little more on the Maine side. It's been a chippy affair already. I really want to see Fowler score this weekend, he's had a lot to say at the UML bench and at their guys between plays at whistles.

Rinks about half full.
Big rink, music too frigging loud, not much atmosphere.
Good neighborhood bar just down the rd though.
