University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

We can almost recreate the 1999 Frozen Four... So I'll pick Gustafsson to get the winning goal....

That sucks. Try again :) Be a full fledged homer.

Teamwork makes the dream work!

Saw on Facebook Penn State lost a defensemen, Carter Schade, today after injury in practice - out for the season

He was third on the team in time-on-ice for defensemen and played on their second pair. They have two freshmen defensemen to choose from for a replacement.

Not sure how much of a difference this makes. But juggling of the pairings now must give a coaching staff heartburn.

From what I've read Defense isn't Pedo St strong suit so maybe this becomes a bigger issue for them

They are the 20th worst team in GA/G and the only team in the tournament field allowing over 3 goals/game. However, they have the seventh highest scoring offense.

Interestingly, Maine is 4-1-1 against teams scoring more than Penn State.

Assuming that Dowd Jr. will move up to the second pairing spot. They had Carson Dyck as their extra defenseman in their most recent game and he rates out pretty strongly defensively so wonder if they'll slot him in on his off-hand on the third pairing now. Looking below the surface stats, relying on Fascia/Gallucci would be a pretty significant downgrade for them, even with sheltered minutes.

Already thought Maine had a pretty good edge defensively heading into this game, but that's definitely the case now.

PSU probably has a slight advantage when it comes to top six forwards but I'd give that same edge to Maine for the bottom six.

I would give Maine the edge in net, even though both of Sergeev's starts against Maine were good at UConn (27 save SHO last season & 2GA win in 22/23).

I don’t see where Dyck is listed on defense. He is listed as extra skater here. https://x.com/PennStateMHKY/status/1901054670195278136/photo/1

He has 6 blocked shots in 24 games.

He is averaging 7 minutes a game and 4.8 for CHIP which is quite low.

When in the line up, each of those freshmen defensemen averaged over 11 minutes time-on-ice, which is bottom pair numbers when they were in.

In clips he looked to be a right wing.

That is why I am saying they will likely have to put one of the freshman defensemen in the line up and deal with juggled pairs.

Ah yeah good catch, I was lookin at their lineup card which had the extra skater listed next to the defensemen.

All that much better if they have to rely on either of the freshmen to on their third pairing.

I hope Maine gets pucks deep and a lot of traffic in front of their goalie. Make it hell for their defense. As the team says, drag them into the cave.

I forget which coach it was that said this… Cavanaugh or Carvel??? But they said Maine plays the heaviest hockey in hockey East this year.

I'm loving the band's rugby shirts. I live in CA so I can't really pop by campus - do any of you know whether that blue & white striped rugby shirt is sold with a hockey logo? Thanks.
