UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

It's more disappointing to see how the Cats lost than the simple fact that they got beat. As before, the 4th line got very little ice time, even though they played reasonable well when they were out there. The top 2 lines were overplayed, couldn't produce when they were out there and were dead tired for the last half of the game. Look at their plus/minus and the giveaways they created or lack of help in the defensive zone. The D was not sharp tonight and especially Kostolansky, who was on for 4 goals against and should have been sat for Hardowa after the second one. He didn't have it tonight and was outsized by the RIT forwards. However, our coaches chose to stick to their plan , even though it wasn't working. All in all, it was a good season for the Cats and a lot of other teams would gladly trade places with them. Thanks for an entertaining year, a never say die attitude and looking forward to next season.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

In all seriousness, I'd like to congratulate the players, too. They are a great group of young men who had a wonderful regular season and one awe-inspiring performance in the play-offs.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

He must not have any idea of what to say to his players. Though one would think he would have come up with something since he has had so much experience with this kind of situation. Seriously though, when you see this happen to BU, Parker's face turns beat red yelling/motivating his players. Sean Walsh was the same way.

Things need to change at UNH. This team has had some of the most talented teams in the nation and they cannot win it all. At some point it will start hurting the recruiting. Who wants to play for a coach who cannot lead a team deep into the playoffs and win a title.

Go RIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I don't agree with you. First, who recruited these guys...Umile and staff. Where did Umile learn to coach...from Charlie Holt another class guy. Ask the players what they think, and I am sure they will have nothing but praise for Umile. He is one of the best coaches in the game. BU and Parker, great program and coach, but at least your team made it to the NCAA's and got one great and decisive win. I would much rather play for Umile than someone on a constant tirade behind the bench. One upset to end the season doesn't undo another good season which Umile had and Gwozdecky did as well having his season end the same way the night before.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

You say Umile has underachieved in the past...

In the last 15 years the best UNH players are Haydar and Krog, AHL lifers. The guy never gets the same talent as BU, BC, Michigan, Minnesota, etc yet competes with them every year. He takes a bunch of "B" players and makes them "A" college players.

Borek knows he does not have the facilities or academics to compete with BC, BU, Mich, etc yet he has the eye to go get the players that the big guys are not on to, Bobby Butler, Mike Radja, etc.

Look at the NHLers umile has had compared to those other programs and you say he underachieves?

07 and 08 are years that come to mind, you say they flopped, I say they had no business winning hockey east and being 1 seeds because they did not have near the talent that some other teams had.
Sorry to be the "glass half full" voice here, but these are valid points.

I know that Umile recruited these players and I believe he is a great recruiter, one of the best. I also think the Umile has class. He is a great regular season coach. At some point the coach needs to coach a team win the pressure situation games, not just games that get him a regular season title. Yes they did have a good regular season, but really, how do you think the players feel right now as they are getting on the bus to drive back to Durham...."yeah, its ok guys, we got that regular season championship to hang to our hats on!"

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

What kills me is when RIT takes a one, two, and three goal lead and the camera cuts to Umilie he's standing there like a statue staring into space....not talking up his team, slapping a few guys on the back....just standing there. We've seen that pose too many times.

Body Language is everything.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

I agree. After seeing how well the team could play, against Cornell, I watched a sick, ineffectual effort against RIT today. Umile collected his huge yearly check. We alumni were embarrassed.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Congratulations Wildcats, this has got to be the biggest Umiliation yet. Way to carry the banner for Hockey East.

Good luck against Yale tomorrow. Because if Muse gets hung out to dry, we'll have the last laugh. Moron. :p

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Congratulations to all of the UNH players for exceeding expectations this year. Best of luck to the seniors, as you enter the next phase of your life -- whether or not your endeavors include hockey, may you find happiness and success.

And to those who will be returning to the team next season, I hope that you will remember both the sweet taste of victory as well as the bitterness of defeat you experienced this past weekend, and may that memory guide you next year.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

i would put this up there with one of UNH worst losses.
The disappointing part is the door was wide open to get to Detroit once Denver was knocked out, just like it was for UVM last year after Michigan got beat. RIT just out played /worked the Wildcats for much of the game. Tough way to go out after the nice win against Cornell.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

This is typical UNH hockey and AT IT'S BEST. Fans get excited... some newbies drive out to Albany (as I did in the late 90s)... Umile doesn't get his team adequately prepared for the opponent at hand... and an embarrasing performance against what should be an inferior opponent. Pie on your face. Did anyone else see how red Dickie's face was in the 2nd/3rd period? 6-2 ANOTHER EMBARRASSMENT... and oh by the way, we still haven't seen a Frozen Four under a Borek recruit.

FIRE BOREK
RESTORE THE WINNING TRADITION

I'm not calling for Umile to get fired, but enough of the praise. UNH lost to RIT tonight. No way you can put a good spin on that.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Sorry to be the "glass half full" voice here, but these are valid points.

Well, I wouldn't trade our coach (Joe Marsh) for anything, but if he wasn't there I would put Umile pretty high on the list. Marsh is rarely animated on the bench. By the time the puck drops, the responsibility is on the players to get the job done. Further, I think it is good to keep focus on the bench. I somehow doubt Umile is sipping cocktails in the lockerroom between periods. I never put too much emphasis on body language by the coaches. Scotty Bowman barely moves over a 60 minute game!

Who cares about what the guys do in the NHL??? College hockey is a different game than the pro game and I really appreciate coaches like Umile that play an up-tempo, run and gun style with great skaters every year.

Sorry, but lots of great teams come and go in the NCAA without an NCAA title or even regular trips to the Frozen Four. I mean look at BC's power play in either 85 or 86 under one of the winningest coaches ever (Ceglarski)....Craig Janney, Kevin Stevens, Brian Leetch, Greg Brown and Dave Emma (I think). Unbelievable talent! Unbelievable NHL careers! And they watched RPI, Michigan State, and North Dakota win THE trophy. For my money the greatest college player I have seen never had a great NHL career - Tony Hrcak!

When people talk about firing Coach K at Duke or Georgia's football coach, I wouldn't role the dice like that. Umile is an amazing winner and a class guy. Gwozdecky is one of the best too, did you see him make a peep on the bench? He has been knocked out in the first round the last three years.

You guys are in every game you play. Clunkers happen...it is too bad you had one in the NCAA tourney, but he got you into the tourney and there were a lot of good teams watching the whole thing on TV.

It is hard to be glass half full the night of a loss, but anyone calling for Umile's scalp should be really careful what they wish for.
