Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition
Sorry to be the "glass half full" voice here, but these are valid points.
Well, I wouldn't trade our coach (Joe Marsh) for anything, but if he wasn't there I would put Umile pretty high on the list. Marsh is rarely animated on the bench. By the time the puck drops, the responsibility is on the players to get the job done. Further, I think it is good to keep focus on the bench. I somehow doubt Umile is sipping cocktails in the lockerroom between periods. I never put too much emphasis on body language by the coaches. Scotty Bowman barely moves over a 60 minute game!
Who cares about what the guys do in the NHL??? College hockey is a different game than the pro game and I really appreciate coaches like Umile that play an up-tempo, run and gun style with great skaters every year.
Sorry, but lots of great teams come and go in the NCAA without an NCAA title or even regular trips to the Frozen Four. I mean look at BC's power play in either 85 or 86 under one of the winningest coaches ever (Ceglarski)....Craig Janney, Kevin Stevens, Brian Leetch, Greg Brown and Dave Emma (I think). Unbelievable talent! Unbelievable NHL careers! And they watched RPI, Michigan State, and North Dakota win THE trophy. For my money the greatest college player I have seen never had a great NHL career - Tony Hrcak!
When people talk about firing Coach K at Duke or Georgia's football coach, I wouldn't role the dice like that. Umile is an amazing winner and a class guy. Gwozdecky is one of the best too, did you see him make a peep on the bench? He has been knocked out in the first round the last three years.
You guys are in every game you play. Clunkers happen...it is too bad you had one in the NCAA tourney, but he got you into the tourney and there were a lot of good teams watching the whole thing on TV.
It is hard to be glass half full the night of a loss, but anyone calling for Umile's scalp should be really careful what they wish for.
