UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Agreed. Umile may be far short for the big one, but he may still get us there someday. Borek won't... we need either Patrick Foley or anyone who can snag a top BCJHL recruit over Northeastern and Merrimack. Borek. LSSU. Loser.

A 6-2 loss against RIT isn't a bad day... it is just bad. The coaches would have saved more face with an "any sized" loss to Cornell.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

The disappointing part is the door was wide open to get to Detroit once Denver was knocked out, just like it was for UVM last year after Michigan got beat. RIT just out played /worked the Wildcats for much of the game. Tough way to go out after the nice win against Cornell.

It's disappointing in a sense that you go from happy to get in, to favored to win the game that gets you to the final four...a loss to either of the other 2 teams in that region, or for that matter, maybe any one of say 12-13 ncaa teams, and my guess is not quite as much salt in the wound....good season nonetheless

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

BC didn't exactly impress against a bad UAF team. They're lucky to still be in it.

But, they DIDN'T lose, and presumably they learned lessons from that game that will be successfully applied tomorrow. I trust Jerry York, particularly at this time of year.

I might add, I very much wanted to see UNH make it to the Frozen Four. I have nothing against UNH and their fans, in fact I kind of like them, unlike say BU or Walsh-era Maine. But it's just not happening under Umile.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

I mean look at BC's power play in either 85 or 86 under one of the winningest coaches ever (Ceglarski)....Craig Janney, Kevin Stevens, Brian Leetch, Greg Brown and Dave Emma (I think). Unbelievable talent! Unbelievable NHL careers! And they watched RPI, Michigan State, and North Dakota win THE trophy.

Which would be why Ceglarski is arguably the most overrated coach in the history of college hockey. Never did a coach accomplish less with more. At a certain point what you do in the regular season doesn't matter anymore, it's what you do when the big prize is on the line. Ceglarksi did nothing. Umile hasn't either.

Sorry, does Doug Woog ring a bell.

I think he's right

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

I'll stack Ceglarski against anyone in the overrated department. It makes my skin crawl hearing people describe him as a great coach.

Sorry, you look at what Woog had, you see his ridiculous advantage over everyone else in college hockey, and you see his successor win two titles, one with his players...yeah.

Woog is the winner.

Sorry UNH fans, out of your thread now.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Good luck against Yale tomorrow. Because if Muse gets hung out to dry, we'll have the last laugh. Moron. :p

Unless someone has the excuse of a mental illness to fall back on (or possibly too much moonshine), I find it hard to believe any UNH fan could have the last laugh even if BC lost 1000-0 to Yale tomorrow given the meltdowns in Rd1 of the HE tourney (which BC won, FWIW) and Rd 2 of the NCAAs against powerhouse RIT and knowing what BC has won over the past 15 years under York.

Deep down, we all know this.

Sorry to see UNH have a rough go of it again in the NCAAs. Every time we let our guard down and don't see it coming, Umile blindsides us. I was rooting for the Cats but it is what it is.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

This is absurd. Yeah, Woog, Ceglarski, Umile....they all belong on the scrap heap. If Miami loses, lets throw Blasi on there too. He has never won the big one.

I seem to recall the same team that beat Woog in the 1989 NCAA title had a pretty good record against both BU and BC in the Beanpot and other games against Boston teams in that era.

Sorry, fans from teams that finished below UNH in their league standings don't come across with a ton of credibility.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Two and done is better than one and done - and a heck of a lot better than none and done.
Thanks to the Wildcats and the UNH Fan Forum for combating the doldrums of winter.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

I think some of the best recruiting for the UNH program is done when they are televised nationally playing as they did Friday night. Conversely, Saturday night was a disaster with the defense asleep and handing RIT a 3-1 lead. Which was the true UNH team? I'll remember Friday's, thank you; that was UNH hockey.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Congratulations Wildcats, this has got to be the biggest Umiliation yet. Way to carry the banner for Hockey East.

this is not what we, as Eagles, act like (or think for that matter). Your sarcasm is an embarrassment to all of us...............Good luck next year and don't give up UNH, you will eventually get what you guys deserve, a NC.You carry the banner for Hockey East in a very classy way. We as BC fans felt the same way as you until 2001. we waited a long, long time too......

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

This post is mostly for JohnB and watcher who seem to say that yr after yr Umile underachieves and chokes. I personally believe that he has talent most years and does the best with what he has. We can argue this, but UNH does not have the facilities and academics to keep pace recruiting with the likes of BC, BU, Michigan, MSU, Denver, Minnesota, etc. To illustrate my point, I think NHL scouts know talent better than anyone of this board, even NCAA watcher... Here are the teams UNH has lost to in the NCAA's since 04.

Michigan 03/04- players who signed NHL contracts- 12- Hensick, Ebbet, Helminen, Tambellini, Nystrom, Rogers, Moss, Ryzner, Hunwick, Brown, Rohlfs, Montoya

UNH 03/04- players who signed NHL deals- 2- Winnik and Caron (being generous with that one)

Denver 04/05- players who signed deals- 9- Gauthier, Stastny, Carle, Skinner, Paukovich, Corbin, Dingle, Fisher, Mannino

UNH 04/05- players signed- 2- Winnik, Regan

Mich State 05/06- players signed- 8- Miller, lerg, booth, fretter, Mckenzie, Abdelkader, Potter, Kennedey

UNH 05/06- players signed- 3- Smith, Winnik, Regan

Miami 06/07- players signed- 7- Davis, Jones, Mercier, Martinez, Zatkoff, Christie, Palmer*(likely to sign)

UNH 06/07- players signed- 3- Smith, Regan, Butler*(likely to sign)

Notre Dame 07/08- players signed- 6- Condra, Thang, Hanson, Cole, Pearce, Lawson

UNH 07/08- players signed- 3- JVR, Butler, Regan

Every yr, probably with the exception of this year, talent wise UNH is outmatched yet still is in the mix, this is because of great coaching and great recruiting. Borek knows he can not get players over many of the teams listed above and instead gets players than turn into grade A college guys, like Micflikier, Radja, Fornataro, Butler, etc. Every year UNH has far less talent than many teams, yet Umile gets them to the NCAA's every yr over teams with more talent--See BU this year

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

The lack of talent has nothing to do with the "coaching" aspect that manage to kill the team on the occasions that it has greter talent than the opponents. The more this happens, the harder it is to recruit out of this death spiral. It happens to every legendary coach, even Charlie Holt. For an unimaginative coaching staff like this, it will be even harder. The lack of any imagination comes through in the lack of in-game adjustments, the lack of quickness in filling roster holes, the lack of staff shakeups. They're happy to keep banging their head against the wall, expecting different results.

Edit 2: I've said my piece for the off-season. I'm not sure why I should be more passionate about the program than the coaching and admin. As Snively 65 said after the Vermont debacle, each year the passion grows a bit weaker, we still follow but if there's something better to do on a Friday night, UNH hockey is no longer "must see." Unless something fundamental changes in this off-season, there's nothing more for me to add about the direction of the program, so I'm done til October.

Hey fanboy, what time is BU's game today?

He made a good point. BC did not play well against Alaska. Plenty of BC fans on their thread have voiced the same opinion. When a team like BC is tied against Alaska 1-1 going into the third, something is wrong. BC managed the win because in the end they have more talent and are just good at winning in the post season. They will do the same against Yale only this time I expect them to embarrass Yale since I'm sure York has had a talking to them about their Alaska game performance.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Back from Albany.. this is a tough one. UNH just got beat plain and simple. RIT got a lot lose pucks, seemed to be faster and UNH had a hard time passing.. My only real complaint was the abismal PP.. having Kessel and Campanale play catch at the blue line- is not a PP.

Good solid core coming back- experienced D- NCAA's in Mach next yr.. I hope we can replicate a Student section like the one RIT had.. That was Impressive- and although a UNH fan.. great college atmosphere.
