Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition
I have mixed thoughts on Kostalansky playing.
On one hand he is maybe the team’s best puck handling defenseman. That should help the offense. On the other end he is small and not overly physical. Against Cornell that could be a problem down low.
I am also not a fan of taking Hardowa out, which is who I would guess Umile sits. Since Kostalansky got hurt I have been impressed with Hardowa's play. He isn't fast but on the small sheet that shouldn't be as much of an issue. Hardowa is positionally sound and one of UNH's more physical defenseman. He is also very good at covering the guy in the slot. I have been impressed with how he plays with the puck on his stick.
If I am the coach I sit Krates. Yes he is a senior but the puck on his stick is like a live hand grenade, he just wants it gone. It is like he is afraid to make a bad play so he make a bad play. His play has made me very uncomfortable as of late.
Once earlier this year I think Umile dressed 7 D-men, with Hardowa playing forward some – maybe 1st night @ Maine. If you have so little faith in the 4th line to play them 1 shift for the game against Vermont, I would put Hardowa, Henrion and McCarey on the “4th line” and rotate them in as a situational sub. Offensive zone face-off Henrion for his shot off the draw, need energy McCarey and let him bang or after a PP or PK to give somebody else a rest etc.
I'm surprised there's not more talk of the Kostalansky return . . .
