Chuck Murray
WIS & Effingwoods Hockey Almanac
SO reminiscent of the 2002 semis in St. Paul ... a misleadingly close first period, followed by a complete implosion spread over the last 2 periods, and does MS7 do anything to try to settle his team down, and get them back on track after the second (or third) UMaine goal??? Nope, just like his predecessor, the strategic in-game genius saved that timeout, just like Coach Umile always did. Not like it mattered though. 5-0 is pretty much 7-2.
As I just wrote on the UMaine thread ... from the folks who wrote the book on postseason gacks, a fresh new chapter.
Despite some folks running their mouths (fingers?) on here to the contrary, who apparently have reading comprehension difficulties, I never gave UNH more than a puncher's chance against a clearly better UMaine team. Instead, they ended up on the canvas, and the lack of special teams played a huge part in their downfall.
So in the end, this was a 6th place HEA team that won three straight games against last-place Lowell, and has since found out the "new" guy is just as bad as the "old guy" at the postseason thingie. Jeezus, even freakin' Luce and his loser program from Storrs, made vaunted BC sweat by scoring 3 goals in the 3rd period to close a 4-1 deficit, before losing late. Postseason games are SUPPOSED to be close. 5 goal losses are supposed to be rarities in elimination hockey. Yet UNH collects them like they are penny candy.
All eyes now turn to you, AD Allison Rich ... do the right thing ... now that you've seen it and experienced it in person. I gave you tons of credit for the decision on Men's Hoops ... you blow ALL of that goodwill if there is an extension on the desk of Coach Souza when he gets back from this humiliating (Umiliating?) defeat. You had your chance ... thanks for playing ... you're not up to the job now, and you were never up to the job ... grab your parting gifts on the way out, and please leave with grace. Let some of us remember you as a very good player. Bye.
