Re: UNH Football 2010
that has to be the worst game McDonnell has ever coached. How in the hell does he manage to lose this one????? Uh... coach... here's a clue: RUN THE BALL WHEN YOU ARE RUNNING OUT THE CLOCK! DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For those that did not see the game, UNH had the ball with under 2:00 to play and a 3rd down at the URI 40 (approximately). UNH was leading 25-21. URI had used all of their timeouts trying to stop UNH on that drive and save some clock for once they got the ball back. What does McDonnell do on 3rd down???? PASSES! Unreal... and, of course, Toman gets blindside sacked and fumbles... and the linebacker picks up the ball and races 40+ yrds for the lead TD... and a 28-25 lead. It just boggles the mind. You know you think you have seen nearly everything, but no.
But really this game was lost well before that.... after taking a 15-3 lead on the first two drives (easy TDs), McDonnell goes flatline and totally changes up the gameplan to totally screen/QB keeper/slow hand off plays ... for the second and third quarters. Predictably, we get jack squat on offense.
I am just so sick of this coach. The guy is a great recruiter.. I will surely give him that, but his game management is effing pathetic and his clock management at the end of halves is nearly as poor. Why in the world when you have athletes like Terrance Fox, Joey Orlando, and Kevon Mason would you INSIST on NOT throwing downfield?? Every dam n throw was a screen pass. And, for having a QB that is a bit banged up, he sure had Toman keep the ball a lot and run and take hits.
I don't know. This game not only was winnable, it was blowout-able if there was a different mindset on board. Chip Kelly, where have you gone???? Oh yeah... Oregon. Sigh.....
