UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

Looking at it from MS7's standpoint ... I'd be pretty PO'ed with my own guys, coming up small in something at least approaching "big" games. And after going out on a limb and pronouncing his Captain as "the best defensive defenseman in Hockey East", he got a clown show performance from a guy who is your purported team leader. It was WAY too familiar a (non) performance that us old-timers have too often seen from UNH.

Season is FAR from over, but the path to the goals some of us (myself included) were predicting just got SO much harder. It IS an opportunity for MS7 to practice the boys hard, and perhaps have some private discussions with team "leaders" (sorry to use the quotation marks this time) about what true leadership looks like ... IF MS7 even knows himself? Next weekend offers a great bounceback opportunity where little will be expected of UNH from outside their own room. Maybe it will be BU's turn to mail in a bad weekend of overconfidence??

I also wonder if MS7's sourpuss appearance after Luce's handshake had anything to do with challenging the 2 minute call against his Captain? Challenging a similar call against Fitzy the night before was arguably different, as (1) it wasn't his Captain, and (2) it was disallowed. Going to the well a second time, with #28 in his crosshairs, maybe MS7 took that personally? I'm not here to debate "right or wrong" - Luce's job is to help his own guys win, and his challenge against Gagne was confirmed, so by the book he made the right decision. But this is a guy who has been a two year Captain, someone he's vouched for publicly, and at the heart of MS7's turnaround (however that turns out) ... and the guy you go golfing with (along with UConn hoops legend Geno Auriemma; sp?) in the offseason, decides to kneecap your guy in a very public way, I'm not sure that this coming summer's golf outing won't be a little frostier, unless MS7 gets a chance for payback between now and then?

Speaking of unhappy looks ... I mentioned to HR during Friday night's game that in between the 2nd and 3rd periods, I was passed by a very unhappy looking UNH Director of Hockey Ops, who seemed to be en route from the press area to the room downstairs. I didn't follow him to see where he eventually went - nature was calling, so I had other priorities! - but I can't imagine he was happy with the on-ice performances. I'm not sure if his (new) position is as a subordinate, equal or superior to that of the Head Hockey Coach, but one would think MS7's future will be in part decided this time around with some feedback from JT. Food for thought.

Random observation ... I haven't been to the Toscano Family Ice Hut yet, but listening to "Brass Bonanza" booming out after home team goals is a nice throwback to the long-departed Whalers. Shame it had to be played one more time yesterday than UNH scored their own goals. It's possible I could even begin to like UConn in the future ... contingent upon the removal of one element in particular in their nascent program ...

... which finally brings me back to address (to the extent I can or will) the speculation of what lies beneath my contempt for the beady-eyed little weasel known far and beyond as Luce ... and yes, as Snives has pointed out, a good slice of it has to do with his self-pronouncements of (stolen) greatness as an assistant to Coach York, which have continued to trickle out (albeit way less frequently than before) from time to time, but now that his self-promotion has failed to land him his desired return to The Heights, maybe that will quiet down entirely? But more than that, there were/are a lot of unflattering things that go beyond being a York wannabe that have come to my attention from various credible sources over a LONG period of time, which serve as the crux of my ... uhh, profound lack of admiration for Luce. Multiple verified source stuff, some fairly innocuous "everyone does it" stuff from the recruiting trails, and other more serious things, all of which were disclosed to me on condition of anonymity, privacy, etc. And there is no statute of limitations (to me anyway) on keeping those promises. Some (not all) of it had to do with the aftermath of an infamous, grisly in-game HEA incident that now goes back almost 22 years ago. I'll just leave it at that ...

Anyone who believes a shred of this gaslighting BS needs serious help. Opinion based on anonymous and vague allegations, but very serious. Riiight, got it. Funny thing is, this is right out of the liberal playbook. Make stuff up about someone, gaslight it, and eventually get so frustrated, that you resort to calling another grown man a "scumbag". You are a complete clown.

Well, there are some issues with your take here, namely with (1) the information upon which I've reached my personal conclusions has been confirmed by multiple informed and reliable sources, whose information on other items has held up in the past; and (2) I've never disclosed any specifics of what those folks have told me, based on author/source agreements, so nothing is out there, other than my own personal conclusions.

Folks have asked me for years ... why? I only confirm there IS a why, it's my personal conclusion, and I'm not forcing anyone - not you, not folks who are friends with the guy, nor folks who are not big fans. I protect my sources, I do not disclose specific details, and if you happen to like the guy, then go with it. Stuff that's out there in the public realm, i.e. the open ambition for the BC job, the frequent comments (many on the record, many more off the record, with sources I still protect) about his role in "making" York, that all speaks for itself.

If that still bothers you, you have every right to your opinion, as do I. If you choose to discount the accuracy/reliability of my sources, you are free to do so as well. I think the fact that, when he made it obvious that he saw BC as his manifest destiny after Coach York's retirement, and BC decided to go in a very different direction ... well, doesn't that speak volumes of how he is regarded by those who saw him up close and personal during the times when he felt he was the difference maker for that program?? Again, I'll just leave it at that ...

So your hatred for Cavanaugh is because, as you allege, he wants/wanted York's job?!?

Horrible weekend. Eating my words. Guess the old timers are right. This “new fan” (by a dinosaur’s standards) still believes in better days ahead. You would think such a high stakes HEA game would propel the boys to show up one of the two nights, or at the very least in their own barn - but apparently not so.

Bummer. Optimism has been cut in half.

Welcome to the reality of being a UNH hockey fan. Consider this a start to your "curmudgeon" training, young padawan. :)

The boys need a Herb brooks moment ("again"). I still believe the talent is there, but the effort and discipline was not throughout the weekend. Coach better be working OT. We need a statement game on Friday (forever optimistic)!

OK so let me clarify ... and also make it clear that I'd rather talk about other stuff, but accept that the interest in the topic comes from this being my long-term gripe ... anyway, let's start with the above as the "York thing" - which actually is a secondary issue of mine. I don't think there's anything wrong with a successful assistant who aspires to succeed his super-successful boss, IF that's all there is. I think that's pretty much a natural thing, for folks who find themselves in that scenario. Closer to home, I'm sure Stewart (and before him Borek, Serino and even Brian McCloskey) aspired to succeed Umile. And for every Standbrook or Tortorella or Jim Logue (BC) who might prefer to be an assistant for lifestyle reasons or whatever, there are five other guys who won't rest until their head is the one that wears the crown. So Lucer is far from alone on that.

Now, back to the "York thing" ... after Coach York (who'd previously enjoyed good success at Clarkson in his 30's, and huge success at Bowling Green in mostly his 40's - including a D-1 title) came over to dig BC out of the mess that Count Cedorchuk had created at The Heights (a topic I enjoy FAR more than this one lol), he hired Luce a year into that project. Jim Logue (that name again) was already a Cedorchuk holdover, who worked with York another year prior to Luce's hire), and the three of them - York, Logue and Luce - were together all the way through the end of the 2013 season. Greg Brown - BC's current head coach - joined the coaching team circa 2005. When BC won the D-1 title in 2001, Logue and Luce were his assistants (along with Scott Paluch, who York brought with him from BGSU, and who left a few years after 2001 to HC at BGSU). Brown was around as the 3rd assistant with Logue and Luce for the 2008-2010-2012 trifecta. For those keeping score at home, the D-1 titles won by the long-term assistant coaching team looks like this:

* 4 - Jim Logue
* 4 - Luce Caanan
* 3 - Greg Brown
* 1 - Scott Paluch

It seems something likely happened circa the end of the 2013 season, as Logue retired, and Luce went off to coach at UConn. Maybe Coach York let the guys know he wasn't planning to step down anytime soon (he'd stick around for another decade as it turned out), and then a few years later, Brown left to be an NHL assistant with the Rangers.

It was around the time that he left for UConn that I began to notice frequent comments in the HEA media that seemed to be suggesting Luce was the power behind the throne at The Heights during the York era, and as time went by, some of these same folks seemed to point out often how York hadn't won since Luce left. Luce himself chimed in on the QT a couple of times on this issue. No one - and I mean NO ONE - seemed interested in pointing out that (1) York had won at BGSU without all but Paluch (who BTW had some very good years as BGSU HC after his return), and (2) Jim Logue had been there for every BC York Era title, just like Luce. I made a few well-placed enquiries, and confirmed for myself that there was a high degree of intersectionality between the pro-Luce media pimps and Luce's circle of hockey pals. QED.

In summary ... nothing wrong with ambition, but when it involves tearing down York/trampling Logue ... scummy ... :mad:

The more important stuff (from my standpoint) predates the modified "3-for-5", I'll continue to keep that to myself.

Chuck, no offense but... take your meds.

He's a jerk because he wanted York's job (many wanted him to get the job) and that he didn't "speaks volumes"?

And then to throw in the reference previously to Eaves/Exter; laughably bad. Don't get me wrong, I find it hilarious that he's at Yukon and struggles to hit .500 every season but this is unhinged.

This proves you don’t know what you’re talking about. No one was a bigger supporter of Coach Cav than Jim Logue (his high school coach and good family friend of Cav). Us North Andoverites who grew up with both families know their relationship. Loguey treats Cav like his own kid and Cav treats Loguey like his lifelong hockey mentor. They played in MA high school championships and college hockey championships, ask anyone who ACTUALLY knows the two to explain their relationship.

You completely outed yourself as knowing nothing about someone you berate on an anonymous message board. Again, liberal playbook.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around why you hate a coach because he wanted to be the head coach of a program he was an assistant at. Not sorry but it makes no sense to me.

There is a way to go about such things, and a way NOT to go about such things. I found (and still find) it distasteful. What "spoke volumes" was BC's decision to go with Coach Brown instead of Luce two years ago, because I'm sure the BC hiring committee (which IIRC included Jerry York) had to know of Luce's self-promotion narrative at the expense of York, didn't like it, and gave the job to Coach Brown instead. For me, bravo BC.

But still NOT the primary issue from which my lasting dislike of the man arises. Not to put too fine a point on it, but since you seem to not have gotten my gist in my latest posts ... someone else has mentioned a specific incident that goes back not too long after the 2001 BC title which I shall not belabor. Other than to say that Luce's comments and conduct afterwards - as multiple sourced from people IN the BC camp, people outside the BC camp (opposition) and people with Hockey East (!) had all confirmed for me at the time. A lot of subsequent comments and conduct by Luce fell in line with the initial reporting, which I found/still find highly credible.

Now if I ran with the story then, the details likely would have exposed my sources, which is probably why they didn't go with the story on their own. Promises of confidentiality to the sources made my situation a non-starter ... but it does not prevent me from forming my own opinion, nor from sharing that I do have a strong opinion on the topic. Logue and York could personally vouch for the guy to me (neither has to date BTW!) but that wouldn't change my opinion.

Using the moniker Luce Canaan also appropriately distances legitimately good guys like York and Logue from some of the conduct their colleague was attached to. And while I always expect a long-time BC guy like "Nick" to bust my chops if/when given an opportunity to do so ... one thing he cannot discount is that my overall perception of BC Hockey has changed favorably over the years, especially once Luce left town, and then double down on that when he was deemed persona non grata when York's replacement was decided. Again ... bravo BC.

With all due respect to Mrs. Canaan three posts above ... you don't have to like and/or agree with my opinion, but do not discount that it is well-founded and (IMO) well-deserved. And the only person who's been "outed" in the process over the last 10+ seasons has been Luce himself, who is nothing more than a grossly overpaid, mediocre D-1 coach and a mere inconsequential shadow of the guy he constantly knee-capped for years on the QT. I suspect even my old frenemy Nick would agree with some/most of that. Karma, as they say, is a ...

I do not get this reference. Anyone who has read Chuck’s posts here and in the Cafe knows that Chuck ain’t a liberal. :)

Really? He's not a liberal? Shucks. Of course the idea that the posts were politicized at all makes me chuckle...Anyhoo...

On another note was messaging a fellow UNH fan and they pointed out BU has had their share of major penalties this season.

Wonder how our own penalty happy bunch will conduct themselves this weekend. We sure don't want to be on the other side of that too often. I will say I'm looking forward to seeing the younger Eiserman play.

And despite our results of the weekend we eeked in on #19 in the poll and #13th PWR. Holding on by a thread...

Does any BC fan have any idea what Chuck is talking about? I would think BC fans would take exception if a former assistant was saying bad things about their legendary retired coach and/or program. I’ve only heard, so far, Chuck with this poor opinion of Cavanaugh which is evidently based on info only Chuck knows and can’t share and won’t share his sources when pressured on it. Makes one think there is no legitimate reason Chuck keeps calling Cavanaugh a scumbag if he can’t explain it with any credibility.

Everybody, this guy knows what he's talking about. He's a 'North Andoverite' who ACTUALLY knows 'Cav' and 'Loguey'

And, he can discern anyone's political preference in a hockey forum.

Do us all a favor and go back to Facebook.

Time to get back to hockey and the purpose of this message board.

After a disastrous weekend where there are no positives we stand at 13 in the PairWise.
