UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

UND can thank St Ralph Engelstad for its ability to buy out coaches and facilities. If only …..ah, to dream.
Don't forget its juggernaut of merchandising revenue or regional TV deal which generates even more cash to the program.

At UNH, you're lucky if you can find a flammable, knock off jersey and leftover pompom hats from 2007.

So the regular season is over in the QMJHL and the OHL here's the final stats for the 4 players coming in next year for the Wildcats. Alex Carr D 6-39-45pts. Nick DeAngelis D 6-32-38pts. Jacob Newcombe F 36-37-73pts. And Sam Oliver F 50-28-78pts. Oliver lead the QMJHL in goals and is just what UNH needs. Newcombe beat cancer last year and was captain of his team, very skilled forward. The two Defense men are solid and I believe will be a much needed upgrade. Carr was also Captain and the other two were Assistants. Hopefully their leadership and skill can get the Wildcats back to a winning team.
This is great but where's the CHL recruiting for the 2026-27 class? Did the UNH staff look at this as a one-and-done tour through the CHL? If the CHL is some sort of "saving grace", why aren't they continuing to mine in Canada? Get mean, Mike! Dump the non-productive recruits for CHL upgrades, incuding the apparent future pine-riders in the 2025-26 class. I like to think your job depends on it...

I went to the semi final games Thursday night. Wore my UNH hat and was berated for the entirety of the late game by drunk UMaine fans surrounding me. It was fun aside from one gentleman who seemed legitimately disturbed by my playful cheering for Northeastern, he crossed a line in his verbal attacks on more than a few occasions. Great day all around.

Sounds like WDS if you ask me...haha (Wildcat Derangement Syndrome) lol

Sunday night's Brad Berry firing at NoDak has been the subject of intense speculation over on the Reddit College Hockey Forum for the last several days. Rumors (and so far, absent any concrete proof, that's all they are) abound that the weekend benching of a star Fighting Hawks player was tied to an ugly off-ice incident that many other NoDak players believed was not handled quickly or forcefully enough by the HC. Several are apparently now ready to jump ship as a result, once the portal opens. Nothing but crickets so far out of Grand Forks, other than last night's boilerplate announcement of Berry's firing. Surf in here and read/judge for yourself if there's any truth to the allegations:

The truth re: the "elephant walk" incident at UVM, and Mark Morris' "aggressive" interaction with players at Clarkson practices eventually was revealed; time will tell if there's any fire to accompany the smoke behind Berry's firing ...

HAHA YES! Absolutely.

Many exchanges like this:

Drunk Mainer: Your team sucks!!!
Me: I know!!
A few years back me and some fellow fans were getting an earful from a guy at one of the games in Portland..maybe 2015? Over and over the 'we got 2 how 'bout you' ...finally I turned around and said "well at least we have teeth in our heads" 🤣 bTW we won that night and then smoked them the next night in Manchester...

Ahhh good times...

Ps sorry Maine fans maybe too many Bud Lights that night clouded my usual pleasant disposition...

"Did you lose a bet?" is what you get sick of hearing from Maine fans any time they seen you wearing a UNH jersey.

Why don’t you put your money where your fat arrogant pompous mouth is and say who you are. Give some validity to your posts or go away.
Please don't waste your time norbert; he's the gutless coward who will never reveal his true identity.

I guess you know who has no clue. I would mention a name but I don't want Luck Pot to have an afternoon anxiety attack.

Apologies for bad Maine behavior. I’m sure it works both ways. Get a new coach and I’m sure you can return the favor. As you know most of the idiot fans are new to the sport and the history of our schools in the NCAA’s.
Yes, it works both ways, no need to apologize. We suck and we know it, it's not like he was telling them something they didn't already know! Back in the day, it felt like I was talking my life into my hands going into the Alfond dressed in my UNH garb. Insults were hurled and returned, all part of the fun!

Best fan reaction ever.... UNH's first Hockey East Championship, won against Maine. Several Maine fans sitting near me were ruthless all game. UNH wins and the chief instigator sticks his hand out a says "Congratulations, now go win a real one, Hockey East will be better for it." (20+ years later UNH is still working on it... sadly)

At the end they were all very classy. I never mind taking it, and I was astonished at the end of the game. Has made me a better fan, cheer your heart out and remember to win and lose with grace.

So you Wildcat fans, what is a reasonable expectation for your program moving forward? Near term and longer term. This is a brutally competitive league as evidenced by 6 teams in the tournament. BC and BU are always going to be at or near the top (with an occasional rare backslide out of the top 4), Maine has clearly righted the ship under Barr. UConn seems ascendant with a new arena. UMass and PC are always in the mix.
I'm a Merrimack fan (a rare creature on these boards) and my expectations for the Warriors is competing for 5th through 8th, with an occasional "lightning in a bottle" jump into the top 4 and a drop back into the bottom 3 if they end up in a rebuild situation.
Incredible that UNH has not been back to the Garden in 10 years! You guys need to get back in the mix!

Near Term
  • Acknowledge there IS a problem and it isn't (just) the building.
  • Replace the coach - he just isn't the right leader for the program right now, this has been proven - on ice, off ice and fan service
  • Hire somebody with charisma, energy and vision, that can do something similar to Ben Barr at Maine (and it might be better not linked to Umile)
  • Turn the roster as appropriate
  • get to 4-8 range (in a decade once above 8th) and stay there
  • Stop treating your fans like crap and no free tee shirts don't count as not treating your fans like crap
  • Restart Friend's of UNH Hockey and the Coach required to regularly be out in the community (radio show, podcast, get back on morning radio on Monday's etc. etc.)
Longer Term
  • Update the Whitt players amenities - gotta turn the ship to get the money to keep up with the Jones's
  • Year in Year out 1-5 in league
  • Back to Boston on a regular basis
  • Back to the NCAAs on a regular basis

P.S. One more Near Term after a couple people liked this... acknowledge (to yourself privately is OK) UNH is not and will never be "a football school". It has a chance to be "a hockey school". AND we are "not going to throw away our shot" to be something and we are going to start acting like it.

This would be a great email to send to the AD...Also they are looking for people to be on the 'fan advisory' committee..not that this kind of thing is discussed tho!
Wondering if there is ever a 'state of athletics' report or something to that effect but of course, we regular fans would never see it if there were such a document.
