UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

Money well spent???? Did they really spend several million to reduce the corners in order to attract more defensemen? From the 2022 form post:

Since then UNH has recruited defensemen
Ryan Philbrick
Josh Player
Price Grimes
Conner DeHaro
Nikita Korneyvich
Reid Conn
Jayden Connors
and major junior kids
Nick DeAngelis and
Alex Carr
Good point Watcher take away the 2 MJ kids and I'd give that group a C at best.

It's almost as if the jumbotron, oh wait, the rink size, and, oh wait, lack of modern locker room are the least of the issues.
Why blame yourself and your coaching ability when you can shift blame to the facilities? I'm sure no one would ever notice...

Interesting post ‘Watcher. Did anyone anywhere say having a poor coach with better facilities was the solution? There’s a logical fallacy that you fell into here, ‘Watcher.

Can anyone who spotted it name it?

It is almost as if there is a current culture of victimhood in the US.
Oh, JB, there you go again acting like you’re a mentor to anyone. Btw, you’ve come from a culture of freeloading. You seek out other people to fund things you can’t or won’t contribute to .

Perhaps I misunderstood you when you wrote:
I’ve repeatedly said that he’s a problem but not the problem. I worry that firing Souza just adds 3-5 more years before any attempt is made to address the much larger and formidable...
Any response that starts with "firing Souza without solving the entire problem" ignores incrementalism. Nobody ever wrote "I worry about only fixing the rink without firing Souza." Does it only work one way? And if so, how does your response not equate to "lets forget about solving the most glaring problem because we're never going to solve the entire problem?"

Why is it so hard to say "OK, everyone agrees to fire Souza. Full Stop. Then let's turn to solving the remaining issues on day 2."

Incrementalism. Bingo. You went all straw man on me during your last post. Incrementalism is certainly an excellent approach. The problem is too many people on here are suggesting that firing Souza is the possible solution, when it clearly is not. The program has not advanced forward in 20 years. By not moving forward and reinvesting you fall behind. Kind of like keeping your money under your pillow instead of investing it. Money losing mistake obviously.

There's a very significant fear that exists at UNH and much of NH about any type of progress, which includes innovation, investment and risk taking. The notion of renovation, expansion, capital investment paralyzes people due to cost. As a result, they default by saying they prefer to take the easy road (i.e. fire the coach and keep their money under their pillow for safety). They usually go on about looking for a sugar daddy to do it for them and/or make it a matter of personal character (i.e. "my daddy started with nothing and, well, kinda ended up with close to nothing but never took a hand out in his life!").

That's where the silly notion comes from that there are wealthy private donors coming up from Massachusetts that they can flag at the toll booth in Hampton that are jazzed up about funding UNH hockey.

Here you go again attempting insults, instead of examples for your arguments or even a coherent argument. Side Note: the example you are looking for is Michigan State. They did an upgrade (fully privately funded of similar $ to UNH's proposal) with a crap team and a poor coach. Then went and hired Nightingale and are now a force. Problem you have is from what I can find that is an exception. This is not an "exception that proves the rule", in most cases this statement is misused.

As to me personally
  • Yes I mentor. I am also a mentee. Stupid to go through life not getting or giving support to others. I would not consider that post about victimhood anything close to mentoring. That you seem to think it is, means you don't know what it is to be a mentor. For that I am sorry for you.
  • Freeloading - nope not me. I earn a very comfortable living and I live in NH because in my free time I like land (sticks and plants and animals) more than people
  • I will admit to NOT currently contributing to UNH Athletics beyond season hockey tickets. I used to be part of and regularly contribute to the Friends of UNH Hockey. Marty killed (and Souza let him) the booster club and that is when I stopped giving UNH Athletics money. Bring back the booster club, in a similar form and I will go back to giving them money.
  • As to funding, I support the State doing a better job funding the University. Education is the greatest investment we can make in our country, real education not Art History degrees. No offense to Art History majors but how many of you do we need? Look i want the stock market to keep going up so I can comfortably retire some day, that means the high school and college students of today need to become productive contributors.
I think I have demonstrated my real point repeatedly, the most common way to upgrade athletic facilities (specifically hockey) at public universities is via philanthropic gifts. These new facilities and renovations since ~2000 are vast majority funded outside of State funding. NOT saying this is right or wrong it just is. In the cases I can find, teams winning or on the rise with dynamic public engaged coaches are the ones that get the money for the upgrades (lone exception I have found Michigan Sate).

I think we all agree on this board except Mikey Potluck and AD Rich.

So based on the argument that a facility is key, I don't see the football team as a FCS powerhouse with a new turf field and the new building on the far side of the fieldhouse.

JB: Michigan State? The fact you would attempt to compare UNH athletics to Michigan State athletic funding capabilities is lol. Hell Tom Izzo contributed $1.1 million. I went through the other programs in HE with you already. You’re just a denier.

Michigan States alumni network through Big 10 participation is likely 50x greater than tiny UNH. MSU has 52000 undergraduates. I dare say the yearly earnings of its alums in total is thousands of times greater than UNH.

If you think the UNH hockey program can compete the old way (ie the yearly watermelon feed and golf tournament) maybe the future is AHA level.

Yours is precisely the mentality that has destroyed the program. You don’t understand the difference in fundraising capabilities between UNH and Michigan State?

Ok - you don't understand the realities of the world.

I give you UMass Amherst and UMass-Lowell RENOVATIONS you counter with the rink construction and misconstrue reality. That those rinks were NOT built first and foremost for those University Hockey teams.

We talk about Maine, similar school size and location and that being done by donation and you whine that they have Alfond UNH doesn't.

Find an example, ANY EXAMPLE of Div-I public school construction or renovation of Hockey facilities since ~2000 that wasn't majority or in most cases completely funded by donations. I am asking for just one. I haven't done an exhaustive search but I haven't found ANY.

Potluck:

Its hard to overstate how small minded politicians are. A well paid and connected lobbyist can accomplish a great deal over a dinner with some deal making over legislation. Getting money out of politicians is its own massive industry. Much of it has little to do with taxpayers and everything to do with lobbyists and well connected special interest groups.

You keep noting how easy it is to do it with public funding. So when are you providing UNH with lobbyist names? Or better yet when are you headed to Concord yourself to sit with Ayotte and Packard to just get it from the State.

I means seriously your style is so smooth and your positions so well informed, how could they say no over dinner.

Come on Potluck, when are you stepping up to put some realistic thoughts on how this is going to happen?

Or are you just better at denying realty... you know the earth is actually flat.

Enjoying the ongoing beatdown of not-ready-for-primetime "Potluck Mike" by JB and 'Watcher. Your turn, gents - have fun! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Probably about an 80-90% chance I'll be making the biannual (?) trek to ManchVegas on Friday to see the alma mater take on BC (plus the other game, too). If anyone else is gonna be there, and wants to meet between periods/between games to catch up on life, drop me a note. Snives, I can't imagine you missing this one, given your long-term dedication to the Falcons' cause. 'Ref, I've got your number. Grouch - I've managed to lose yours over the (many) years in between.

Not sure which of the folks from Bandwagon Nation/Chestnut Hillbillies from back in the day are still on here, but if you're around too, let me know ... (y)
