UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

This would be a great email to send to the AD...Also they are looking for people to be on the 'fan advisory' committee..not that this kind of thing is discussed tho!
Wondering if there is ever a 'state of athletics' report or something to that effect but of course, we regular fans would never see it if there were such a document.
Thanks,

AND I almost don't want to. I worry they would do the cursory stuff.

This:
  • Restart Friend's of UNH Hockey and the Coach required to regularly be out in the community (radio show, podcast, get back on morning radio on Monday's etc. etc.)
Not have their heart or real change in mind and that would be more frustrating.

Honestly, Souza MUST go. It doesn't matter what he does now. He can do everything on the list and he will still fail, unfortunately. Honest, I don't want him to fail, seems a nice enough guy. The biggest problem now is his history. Souza's coaching history is now a ball and chain I don't believe he can escape without a trip back to being assistant coach. An assistant some place he can learn and truly be successful. So he MUST go, so that UNH can have "change" and that change is what you can sell all around, most specifically recruits and advisors.

Sadly, this is absolutely true. I figure his last opportunity to show he could turn things around was this past season, and even that would have been a stretch, but with how things turned out, the die is truly cast. Even with the incoming talent from Major Junior hockey up in Canada ... as pointed out by a prior poster very recently on here, the plan seems oddly limited to next season, with no plans to extend what would be at best a temporary advantage for the program.

Maybe part of that is down to the nature of the beast, and players at that age being less likely to commit long-term and/or to preserve options elsewhere?

UNH badly needs a fresh start. Whether he realizes it or not, Souza needs a fresh start too. But as has been pointed out numerous times on here, it's tough to convince yourself your best long-term career move is a move away from the best paying job you are ever likely to enjoy.

From what I understand, the Advisory Committee cherry picks UNH sycophants who tow the party line and lack the testicular fortitude to tell the truth and criticize the status quo.

Now I am really out... not that I was ever in, I am not delusional. Unfortunately, for my career, I have the courage of my convictions. I know I could be further along, up the corporate latter if I could just go along, but nope, just can't help myself and will call a spade a spade.

How I made it to the C Suite with the truth bombs I throw is a minor mystery and something not advised to do in B-School.

Great resource from Mike McMahon for tracking the transfer portal.

No UNH players entered yet, mostly filled with the AIC kids. Curious if they'll pursue the AIC goalie and continue the trend of chasing portal goalies.

The portal doesn't open until next Monday. To date, only players with exceptions - grad transfer, coaching change, scholarship reduction/cut, etc - can enter. You'll notice only one player outside the AIC crew has more than a single season of eligibility remaining (most likely grad transfers). Circle 3/31 that's when the action begins...

Edit TP opens 3/30.

If Gagne doesn't sign with TBL by August he becomes a free agent. Seems like there are three scenarios at play - they're negotiating, Tampa has cooled on the player, or Gagne may prefer the FA route...

The Lightning signed Dartmouth junior forward Cooper Flinton - son of Eric Flinton - this morning.

I was actually pretty surprised at the lack of organizational depth TBL has on the left side of their blue line. Gotta think with Gagne's size, they'd at least give him an ELC to let their minor league staff work to see if he can be developed in Syracuse (AHL) or Orlando (Coast). If he was viewed as a skill player from the outset, he'd have been drafted a lot higher than the sixth round, which is pretty much "hit and hope" territory for most organizations. Take note, Ryan Conmy ...

Money well spent???? Did they really spend several million to reduce the corners in order to attract more defensemen? From the 2022 form post:

Here's an article in the Union Leader (was able to read without a paywall) about the rink shrink thing. Interesting actual quotes about how 'high profile defensemen commits didn't want to come to UNH because of the rink size". Anyway, if it's really going to help with recruiting, I guess that will remain to be seen and I hope it does pan out for everyone's sake.

EDIT: I see a pay wall shows up with this link, but here's the verbiage about commits (not saying that's NOT true and maybe there were players who didn't want to play for UNH because of the size of the ice)

Having a closer-to-NHL-size rink will benefit UNH in recruiting and better its chances to host an NCAA regional if the NCAA eventually moves back to using college sites for that round of the tournament, Scarano said.

The big sheet was a deterrent to some high-profile defensemen UNH tried to recruit over the years, Scarano said.

Scarano said the smaller width should also make for a better game, especially on the women's side. (HR's comment: the size of the ice was not a deterrent when we hosted the women's Frozen Four a few seasons back?? And, women can't skate that ice sheet?)
Since then UNH has recruited defensemen
Ryan Philbrick
Josh Player
Price Grimes
Conner DeHaro
Nikita Korneyvich
Reid Conn
Jayden Connors
and major junior kids
Nick DeAngelis and
Alex Carr
Along with reducing the width of the ice, the $6 million renovations also include installing new glass, more forgiving NHL-style boards and a new sound system. The arena’s ice compressors were upgraded two years ago. The project, which is entirely institution-funded and was originally projected to cost $4.6 million in 2020, is set to be completed by the end of August, Scarano said.

Scarano said there were back-and-forth discussions about reducing the size of the ice surface at the arena know locally as “The Whitt.” The decision was made, Scarano said, through conversations with UNH men’s hockey coach Mike Souza and women’s hockey coach Hilary Witt as well as hockey colleagues across the country.

The renovations do not include completely revamping the seating bowl, which Scarano said was estimated back in 2020 to cost an additional $5-6 million.
Scarano said he has also been working with Souza, Witt and a small group of committed alumni for the past six months on plans to renovate the locker rooms and training room to state-of-the-art status. Scarano said there will be opportunities for major gift donations for that project and the group is currently working to identify potential benefactors and other financing options.
“(Other) hockey programs, particularly the ones ahead of us, have invested millions and millions of dollars in their facilities and that’s important for hockey recruits,” Scarano said. “That’s the way it is and we gotta catch up. We have a lot of catching up to do.”
