UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

You seem to be trying to get a message across, Dan ...

It's actually an interesting exercise. What if UNH re-built their roster entirely with players who previously played for or committed to UNH, had significant connections to UNH/UNH Hockey or grew up in the state of New Hampshire? You know, the kind of kids who might look past the (so called) degenerate facilities the program is working with...

Forwards:
Cole Eiserman (23/34) - Stiven Sardaryan (11/35) - Matthew Wood (17/39)
Cooper Flinton (11/24) - Ellis Rickwood (10/35) - Jack Williams (16/41) *
Ben Muthersbaugh (13/28) - Joe Connor (7/17) - Nate Hanley (10/28) **
Timo Bakos (10/22) - Joe Dunlap (8/24) - Jake Dunlap (0/4)
John Evans (4/12) - Anthony Cippolone (0/3)

Others: Nick Cafarelli, Will Margel, Cam Gendron

Defensemen:
Damien Carfagna (7/21) - Tate Taylor (3/16)
Trey Taylor (9/29) - Sam Court (3/11)
Nate Benoit (0/2) - Cole Crusberg-Roseen (2/11)

Others: Nick Ardanaz, Nico DeVita, Kaden Muir, Caleb Price

Goalies:
Tyler Muszelik (2.28 / .914)
Kyle Chauvette (2.80 / .896)

For comparison's sake - its not apples to apples - that's 154 goals (164 if Nate Hanley does not count). The Wildcats scored 96 this season. My expectation was I could put together a solid team, this is a NC contender...

* I cheated a bit on Jack Williams. But he is from Biddeford, ME, just 51 minutes from Durham, NH...
** I think this is Tim Hanley's son, but not certain…

Did I say that? Where did I say that? Answering a question with a question? Tsk.
Ignore the flat earthers like Buford (Chuck Murray) and Elwood (JB) and Norbert. They think firing Souza will cause a sugar daddy private donor to appear, build a new facility and increase the funding of the program. After all it did at UMaine. Yeah, Alford donated $320 million on the institution with $45 million going to hockey in 2022. They think Ben Barr cajoled $320 million out of the Alfond Foundation. Of course, that type of bequest was considered before Barr ever arrived at Maine but whatever.

Unlike Buford, Elwood and Norbert, the rest of us A. eat FDA approved food; B. have indoor plumbing; and C. Have access to toothpaste and floss. Accordingly, we realize that the only way up for the program involves a complete examination of D1 athletics at UNH at the university and state (Concord) level. Is there an appetite for D1 sports? Is there an appetite to compete at the highest levels of the divisions the programs are in? Should some sports (ahem football) be eliminated in order the elevate others (hockey)? If the appetite to compete seriously exists, how much is the state willing to invest to make it happen?

The discussion should also include deciding what the future of hockey is over the next 20-25 years. If the commitment to compete at high level is not there, dropping to the AHA or making hockey a club sport and repurposing the money for other expentitures should be on the table.

In other words, just running it back year after year with no material improvements while finishing at the bottom the league makes no sense. Souza is a problem but is far from THE problem.

It all starts with the coach. In this case, the coach is the problem.

Good Gawd, you are hysterical. :p:p:p:p:p:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

UNH cannot replace Souza because he has term left on his contract and the buyout apparently is one year of salary - $240,000. UNH wouldn't know how to raise the money to buy him out.
Aw, c'mon!! $240K is a drop in the bucket!!! Shii-iitt, I make that and more...doesn't everyone??? Or am I/ are we (gasp!) over-employed??:eek::eek::p:p:p

If he's not THE problem, he's THE problem adjacent.

In an attempt to reach some common ground, we can agree that whether "a" problem or "THE" problem, the AD really screwed up by extending him more than a year last season.
Turned a 9 year disaster into a 12 year disaster.

Oh well, I assume because UNH has made no announcement, we are stuck with him until 2027. So I'll return to hibernation and focus on enjoyable stuff like home improvement DIY, the Sox or the BC Eagles.

UNH Hockey, looking for millions to solve a $240K problem they created themselves

The AD made the wrong decision but I’d love to know the real story. A new AD should assess each program independently and provide an assessment about the pathway forward. She was new. Her assessment was almost certainly very negative.

She would then make recommendations. I wonder what they were. But It’s certainly on her that hockey continues to slide.

Not sure. They’re not the same team this year in terms of both their ceiling and their consistency of performance. I wouldn’t be shocked if they win their Regional, but I’d bet against that outcome. I think they’ll have their hands full with PC (and call that game a toss up) and would certainly pick BC to win a potential regional final…
The Pio’s are looking strong in game 2 at SNHU.

Tough loss for the Falcons. They left it all on the ice. Seen that movie before.
Agreed on the Falcons leaving it all on the ice this afternoon, right up to that last-minute Hagens’ wrap-around goal, the first that I had seen Connor Hasley give up the past three years. Hasley was awesome the entire season, back-stopping 11 shut outs, along with his 21-12-2 record, 1.95 GAA, and 0.923 SV%. He set the Falcons record for career shut outs at 14 this year, after sharing the net about 50-50 with Nicholas Grabko his first two seasons. Too bad that Grabko did not get invited to play his fifth year at UNH instead of Alaska. Bentley will lose many key players this off-season, but Hasley should back in net for his senior year, so I am hoping that the Falcons can get their second Atlantic Hockey tournament win next season.

Funny you mention Ben M (Union College) he's a former student of mine as was his brother (SNHU) who ironically saw at the Regional today.
