Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines
while you all sit back and bicker at each other, especially those between the sioux and gopher...
Clearly, North Dakota was the more talented team- players have been putting up great numbers all season. So, IMHO, it was natural that the coach stuck with what worked all season- let them work the puck and get the shots.
But, last night, the better coached team won- and this is no disrespect for Hakstol- he HAS a great team, and HAS had a great season- he should stick to his guns. Red, though, came up with a plan that allowed North Dakota to move the puck, cycle, pass, and get some of those shots, but interrupted enough of it to really frustrate ND and limit the chances to very few.
The power play/PK was a perfect example- ND had no decent scoring chances during all of the power plays they had all night. They were somewhat flustered by how the forecheck kept them in their zone, which lead to mid ice passes that were challenged at every chance, and then were forced to dump the puck more often than not, which was then dumped right back down the ice. Even when they did manage to set something up, the pressure was enough to really not allow any decent plays for a shot.
Big deal that ND had the puck most of the time- that does not mean they are controlling play- or did you not see BC's Frozen Four last year? Michigan let ND have the puck, but didnt' allow them to do much with it. It was fun to watch the pair of D get challenged by one forechecker, who somehow bothered them enough so that the next break out pass was challenged, and more often than not, by the time the puck reached center ice, a Michigan player was dumping the puck back into the ND zone, making them chase after it.
So basically, how I see it in rewind- Michigan trusted Red's plan, and they played it to a T. ND played hard, and seemingly had 3 or 4 chances they should have buried- well, that's what a goatender is for, isn't it? Make the killer saves when he needs to. BTW, even with Michigan's defensive posture, they did get some good scoring chances outside of the one goal. One or two prime ones that they should have buried, too. If we are going to play the "coulda, woulda, shoulda" game, I'd say that Michigan woulda gotten 3 more on their chances. And since this game if packed with opinions only, that makes me right too.
Heck of a game.
