UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

If the Sioux would have gotten a lead, Michigan would have opened things up and gotten more than one goal.

If the Sue would have gotten a lead that means that they would have actually scored....

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

I may live in Michigan now, but I'm from the East and I consider myself neutral watching the CCHA or WCHA clubs. From my
view, Michigan outworked ND from the opening whistle. Yes, ND had a couple of flurries that Hunwick had to survive, especially that frantic one at the end of the game, but Hunwick saw most shots coming. BTW Hunwick is a good example of a recruit
that Michigan talks into coming as a recruited walkon while giving a scholarship to anothr player, then throw some money his way down the road. Many of these student/atletes turn down full scholarships to other D1 schools to play in Ann Arbor. The
better team won last night, although ND was more talented, etc.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

I am holding myself held hostage right now, but congrats (gulp) to North Dakota this year. I hate them with all my guts, and cheer against them in every game, but they had one hell-uva-team. Frattin is the best player in the country (despite whether he wins the Hobey or not), and your 'D' was spectactular all season. I am extremelly grateful I don't see #8 rising this year, but UND was the team that "earned" it most.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

Frattin fears no one. Merrill's soul will be in MMFF's possession as soon as the puck drops.

(I'm going to get negged to holy hell for this, but whatever.)

How about that overmatched Michigan defense eh Dirty??? Somehow I think John Merrill is still in possession of his soul, although I think a certain someone with the middle initials "MF" is still looking for his.....

Oh, and in case everybody didn't hear enough of this tonight...

GO BLUE!!!

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

Once again reality evades you as I know why I have a negative reputation on here.

Next!

You seem to revel in being the biggest d-bag new poster we've seen in quite some time.

Congrats!

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

The inability of the Sioux to get anything going on the power play was the most glaring thing to me. How Michigan handles tUMD’s will be the biggest factor in who skates around Xcel with the only trophy that matters. Either way, congratulations to both squads and let’s have a championship game befitting the rest of this tourney.
Also, any word on Brock Nelson? Is there a video of the hit anywhere?

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

while you all sit back and bicker at each other, especially those between the sioux and gopher...

Clearly, North Dakota was the more talented team- players have been putting up great numbers all season. So, IMHO, it was natural that the coach stuck with what worked all season- let them work the puck and get the shots.

But, last night, the better coached team won- and this is no disrespect for Hakstol- he HAS a great team, and HAS had a great season- he should stick to his guns. Red, though, came up with a plan that allowed North Dakota to move the puck, cycle, pass, and get some of those shots, but interrupted enough of it to really frustrate ND and limit the chances to very few.

The power play/PK was a perfect example- ND had no decent scoring chances during all of the power plays they had all night. They were somewhat flustered by how the forecheck kept them in their zone, which lead to mid ice passes that were challenged at every chance, and then were forced to dump the puck more often than not, which was then dumped right back down the ice. Even when they did manage to set something up, the pressure was enough to really not allow any decent plays for a shot.

Big deal that ND had the puck most of the time- that does not mean they are controlling play- or did you not see BC's Frozen Four last year? Michigan let ND have the puck, but didnt' allow them to do much with it. It was fun to watch the pair of D get challenged by one forechecker, who somehow bothered them enough so that the next break out pass was challenged, and more often than not, by the time the puck reached center ice, a Michigan player was dumping the puck back into the ND zone, making them chase after it.

So basically, how I see it in rewind- Michigan trusted Red's plan, and they played it to a T. ND played hard, and seemingly had 3 or 4 chances they should have buried- well, that's what a goatender is for, isn't it? Make the killer saves when he needs to. BTW, even with Michigan's defensive posture, they did get some good scoring chances outside of the one goal. One or two prime ones that they should have buried, too. If we are going to play the "coulda, woulda, shoulda" game, I'd say that Michigan woulda gotten 3 more on their chances. And since this game if packed with opinions only, that makes me right too. :)

Heck of a game.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

Michigan's PK was just outstanding. UND could barely even break the puck out. Very frustrating to watch as a UND fan.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

That's one of the reasons I found this to be such an interesting game. I entirely agree that in the one-on-one scrums UND usually came out with the puck. But they came out with the puck and no options, which is a testament to Michigan's positional play. UND won the puck possession game, but they lost the game away from the puck. That's not an easy feat to pull off, and Michigan deserves some credit for doing it so well.

I vote this for being the best analysis of the game in this thread. Apart from Hunnwick's stellar play, this was the story. UND got possession, but rarely had good options with it. Superb position play by Mich along with tremendous hustle defensively by all Michigan players. Congrats to Michigan.

After, what, 12 consecutive NCAA tournaments since '98 ending in one form or another of "it was their night," I really don't care about any of this.

This is a little misleading. Seems like you're suggesting michigan was the better team in all those losses. That certainly wasn't the case.

Anyway, clearly UND vastly outplayed Michigan last night but in the end the Wolverines did what they had to do. Just another example of how hard this thing is to win, no matter how good you are.

I wil give Caporusso a pass if he flipped that ahole off in return. One is a college kid who just saw some maniacal grown man flip off a teammate.

Agreed. And it is nice to read some actual legitimate analysis and see reasonable people on the board rather than the bickering and BS that the boards have become.

I really thought UND would win this game. Michigan did enough right, and that's how it goes.

I think it's ridiculous to trash Hakstol and say he's a bad coach because he hasn't gotten over the hump. He's a very good coach, maybe he's not a great coach, I don't know. Players seem to like him and the Sioux consistantly have a chance year in and year out. I'd rather have that than years without a realistic possibility to do anything significant. In the end, these are still college kids playing a game and anything can happen.
