UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

It is going to be great beating you when you leave the Cup Cake Conference.

Minny should worry about beating UAA first, then Michigan ;)

Not to mention Michigan is already 3-0 against the WCHA in this tournament.

Yep but Michigan did lose to Minnesota already this season.;)

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

The dogs can really move the puck around on their power play and they almost always seem to be able to get it to the wide guy for the wide open net one-timer.

And UND typically moves it around even better - until last night. I credit a combination of suffocating Michigan D, and uncharacteristically impatient UND shooting.

The win was fully deserved, as was the loss.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

I bet Red expected more out of Hagelin-Caporusso-Brown line, but they had a lot of trouble navigating through the neutral zone. This Michigan team has struggled somewhat in its passing in the offensive zone with odd-man rushes, the passes just don't click, or there are too many.

NoDak outshot Rensselear by a similar margin, 40-20ish, but won 6-0. The Michigan-UNO game was fairly even, with M having an advantage in SOG (37-29). In the CC game, Michigan nearly doubled CC's shots (43-22), and M couldn't bury its quality scoring chances with posts and a missed breakaway. A reflection that this is not its most polished team offensively.

NoDak missed the net on many of its quality chances. That's on their star offensive players shooting on a pint-sized goalie. The 2nd period cross-ice save on Genoway was Hunwick's toughest of the night.

Take the win and move on to Duluth on Saturday. Michigan will be the home team and able to better match lines (Rust vs. Connollys). And M needs to end the useless (too many men) and aggressive penalties.

As we know, sometimes the best team doesn't always win. The winner advances....

I never said the win wasnt desereved. It was. The michigan pk was fantastic they may need to be again. The dogs may not be able to draw as many penalties as UND did, their forecheck is not as strong. Their power play may in fact be better than UND's especially their top unit.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

I just like to see someone bust the chops of the UND fans about Hakstol's record of NCAA championships because for about 12 years that was all we heard from them about Woog and the Gophers. :p
Agreed. Their fans deserve everything that's coming to them in that regard. While it's not logical to blame all these outcomes on one guy or view him as a worthless coach because of the repeated failures in big games, it's certainly fair to do it given that it was done to our team's coach for such a long period of time. The clueless fools who dump on Gopher fans for doing this either weren't around in the "Golden Chokers" years or simply weren't paying attention (or a third possibility is they were around and paid attention and choose to selectively criticize MN fans for doing it because that's how they're wired).

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

No, I don't mean to detract, but we've all been in games like that and sometimes you just find a way to win and should be commended for it, no doubt.

I wasn't at the game, so couldn't see the whole ice, but my impression was that they couldn't forecheck because by the time they did get the puck in deep, they had been on the ice so long trying to get out of their own zone that they needed a line change. Now obviously that didn't happen EVERY time, but it seems like Michigan had to expend a lot of energy just to get the puck past center ice. In addition there were numerous times that I remember tired defenders just chucking the puck from their corners and having the Sioux players outwork or out position the forwards to regain possession.

I guess it doesn't matter though. I bet you and I could argue over what color grass is. :D

Either way I'm glad the Sioux are not going to add to their titles and I hope Michigan doesn't either. Go UMD!

You're right.. this could go on and on so I'll just throw this last point out before it gets too circular :p

I don't think it was that they couldn't forecheck or that they were too tired. Red was obviously short shifting all his lines. It sure looked to me like they headed to the bench almost twice as often as the Sioux. Plus I don't think it was they couldn't forecheck because they never sent in a second guy. Even on offensive rushes (all 2 or 3 of them). It was only one guy because everyone else was either going off on a line change or parked at the blue line waiting for a sioux.

As if I didn't feel dirty enough for rooting for Michigan, now I agree with you on who should win this game? Yikes! When will it all stop! :D :p :D

Logical? Probably not but it sure is way more fun to watch from this side of it. Whee!! :D

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

they also lost to ohio state and a terrible Michigan St. team TWICE. Regular season losses happen, playoffs are "money time"

Are you implying Michigan is a "money time" performer... banners for 98 and 96 and nothing to show in 92, 93, 95, 97, 01, 02, 03 and 08 does not speak much to their performance in recent decades in Frozen Four. That is less than 25% return which would be average of 4 teams reaching Frozen Four... better hope they win it this year so they are slightly better than average.

No coach has had more talent over the years, and not won a Championship than hakstool.

You are right happy. Since hakstol became head coach of the sioux, I cant think of a coach that has done so little with so much talent. Well, except Don Lucia.

You're right.

Oh wait... what about those 2 titles Lucia has? So he's done at least a little something and has some big hardware to show off with that talent.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

This was a rerun of the CC game. Michigan was smothering on D. They leave very little open ice. Ever. They are so good with their sticks getting them in the way of passes and disrupting play. And there is always a guy on the puckcarrier. Its amazing really that they can maintain that level of D. Frustrating to watch when you are rooting against them (I'm a former Spartan now living in MN). Both teams are obviously very good at a different brand of hockey. In a 7 game series, I think it would be a 4-3 type thing. I think they will win it all if they continue their efficient brand of D.

I agree. I hope Duluth is watching tape.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

getting to the ff, and making the tounament is part of the money time. the record of 3-8 in the semi`s is definately red`s achilles heel... but if all 3 of those wins turns into 3 banners......... the final game is the ultimate money time...we shall see

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

since the start of single elimination play in `92... bc leads with 3 banners followed by a bunch of teams with 2 apiece minny/nodak/denver/michigan/bu/maine/lssu...just just a couple with 1..msu/wisky

It's nice to know that reaching the frozen four 11 times in 20 years is average.
