UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

Congrats to the Wolverines. Should be an exciting Final on Saturday.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

Exactly. This wasn't Michigan getting thoroughly outplayed. Michigan's gameplan was to play in a defensive posture and take advantage of offensive opportunities as they were presented instead of playing their typical high tempo transition game. It's a coaching strategy that is obviously paying dividends in the tournament with strong D-corp and goaltending they're getting this year.

Michigans defenders played with a ton of poise. I asked some knowledgeable people years ago what to look for when scouting prospects. The one thing to look for they said was how a player reacted when they had the puck under duress. It looked to me that the Wolverines had ice water in their veins. They never went for that home run breakout pass but were simply clinical in gaining possession and then methodically advancing the puck out of harms way. I enjoy firewagon hockey but there was beauty in the ugly helmets team defense tonight.

Here's to hoping the Western shore of Gitchi Gummi gets to embrace it's first title!

Not cool at all by the Sioux fan. Also quite classy was Caporusso flicking him off two seconds later. (shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe3GQ3mDbKk&feature=player_embedded)
Nice job from the student-athlete. He doesn't even have the excuse of being drunk like the dumb Sioux fan.

Sorry, 5-2.

UM still would have gotten the ENG at the end despite being down by four? ;)

Great game from my view. Was watching on ESPN and although the "great production" was not so great was still real fun to watch. Seeing that UND fan on TV flip off scooter was something else. Guy really need to grow some balls and take the dam loss. Although, I am hoping Duluth wins this one just so Michigan does not get even more championships it was real good to see Hunwick play that good today. Don't see him doing that Saturday but was a great individual performance by him. Gonna be a great game Saturday.

WOW, its like the U!N!O! fans morphed into Sioux fans tonight..... no, no, no I can't go there, I have too much respect for the Sioux program and what they have accomplished, and for Former coach Dean Blais ( a class act) compared to the Mav-newbies. I'll chalk it up to shock and anger, no long term delusions here (unlike U!N!O! inner circle types)

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

At least now you're only 5 goals off from reality.

I assume you're a Michigan fan?

You guys got COMPLETELY outplayed and outworked tonight.

You can't possibly believe that your team wanted to spend most of the game in your own end. That it was intentional to have the Sioux double you up in shots, quality scoring chances, hits, time of poss., board battle victories etc.

I'm not saying that you need to give the game back, but you could/should realize how fortunate you are. Tonight was your night. Nothing more, nothing less.

After, what, 12 consecutive NCAA tournaments since '98 ending in one form or another of "it was their night," I really don't care about any of this.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

as michigan fans, we are familiar with how Sioux fans feel, see 1997 or 2008 or 2009 (vs. Air Force)

not cool either, but certainly a 23 year old in the heat of the battle gets more of a pass than some 40-something.

being drunk is NEVER a valid excuse.....

For at least the entire second half of the game, Michigan's defense readily gave up the blue line and let North Dakota out of the zone to prevent odd man rushes. So yeah, they wanted to spend time in their own zone setting up a solid defense that North Dakota couldn't penetrate, as opposed to taking risks in the offensive zone and having a goal go the other way because of it.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

We've had the better teams before and lost. This time the hat is on the other head.

"Lucky" isn't the right way to put it. Was ND the better-skilled, assertive team tonight? Yeah. Did they play strong hockey and control large parts of the game? Yeah. Did it take some great saves by Hunwick to keep them off the scoreboard? Yeah.

Michigan played the game it had to to beat a better-skilled, deeper opponent. Protect a lead, stay in position, don't give up an odd-man rush (Michigan is just brilliant at giving up odd-man rushes when it feels like it, but that's not a winning strategy against ND's kind of skill). It is an unusual strategy for Michigan, which traditionally fields some of the deepest, best-skilled teams in the country, but it is the winning strategy for this team. Yield the edges, make the most of a few offensive chances, keep the shots visible and predictable.

Will that strategy win every time? No, but it was Michigan's best chance to win tonight, and they took it. "Luck" is a factor only as much as luck is always a factor in games like this--but Hunwick's stops and Michigan's defense weren't "lucky." "Lucky" is to have the opponent kick the puck under his own goaltender in overtime, and the puck to be just barely visible inside the line on video replay. This was desperate, and defensive, and the strategy of a team with inferior skill players, but it was not luck.

Nope. I completely disagree. About half way through the second, Michigan went into a complete stall. They rarely had offensive zone possession and when they did it was a quick break away and shot. They hauled ***** back to the neutral zone to cover someone. They blanketed the Sioux and never left them alone for a minute. There was always someone in front of the net to pick up any extra players or to sweep away rebounds. This is exactly what they wanted to do and it worked to perfection. I have never seen a 30 minute stall like that and was completely waiting for the Sioux to break through, fully expecting it but they played so well that it never happened.

Excuse me while I shower since I feel dirty rooting for MI. Excellent night of hockey. Glad I was there and can't wait to see Saturday.

Re: UND Fighting Sioux vs. UM Wolverines

It's hard to believe that some people actually think MI somehow outplayed UND.
While I agree it's a bit simplistic to say Hunwick won this game on his own, you can't discount that he did stand on his head at times. And while UM played a very sound defensive game, you can't discount that they had very few good looks at the UND net.
Quite simply, the Sue had numerous golden opportunities to put the puck in the net that they somehow failed to convert on. If that was the game plan, then Red Berenson is a gambler and not a coach. No one can expect a goaltender to put up a 40-save shutout (whether it's on his own or with a lot of help from his team).

The Sue were head and shoulders the better team tonight. They just couldn't find the back of the net.

None-the-less, it was quite a choke-tastic game that was very entertaining.

So you're saying that if the student-athlete had been drunk, it would have been more excusable to do some dumb ****?
I guess that explains why Matt Frattin wore a Sue sweater this season.

SCOREBOARD!!! If this game is played 10 more times I think nodik wins at least 8 of those games. However, it will not be played again. The game is over, MUCH LIKE YOUR SEASON!
