UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

I asked scott kaplan about him leaving and he told me that Bob Ellis said it is not going happen.

That is NOT what I said. When I asked Bob, he said he didn't think it was a big concern, as he hadn't heard much talk about it from the coaches.

Great news. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Julian Melchiori selects college hockey route.

Julian Melchiori has made up his mind: The Thrashers draft pick will attend college, despite the significant pull to play junior hockey.
I’m going to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell,” Melchiori said. “It’s a good opportunity for me to go in and play. I’m looking forward to it."

that and because of this article we get an in with all that greater-Atlanta talent...

...

...

any day now. I can feel it. :p

edit: assuming Melchiori does make it to campus... what's the read on him... I've seen things mentioned that he maybe more of an offensive defenseman... if so, does that take pressure off of Edwards?

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

I like that he did, but his comment about "It’s not really about the education" means he's gone as quickly as he can. :(

Agree. Although, it may take him a few years to fill out. Here's a description of him from one of the Thrasher blogs.
Defenseman "thin as a rail, surprisingly quick feet, fine puckhandling ability...nice hands" Red LIne Report. A skinny D with potential--sounds similar to Paul Postma.

Melchiori has a number of pro hockey players in his extended family. He will be attending Lowell in the Hockey East college hockey league next year.

kid his size will need at least a couple of years to bulk up... I think its disheartening to see that period. Then again, who knows if his family is well off or something... if college is always available then it isn't as important if hockey is the ultimate goal. Still, I don't like seeing that comment out of any kid in college.

I think though, as said, he will probably benefit from the college route's lack of games... but I think him and Mr. Barbell need to be well acquainted in the off-season. Bottom line is that the OHL will be hard pressed to give him what he needs to develop right now which is time during the week and time during the off-season. The NCAA season goes no later than 1st/2nd week of April... ours likely won't go beyond mid-March. That'll give him some longer off-seasons than would be seen in the OHL or the NHL so that he can bulk up... opportunities that won't be given later in the NHL/AHL/ECHL.

Has anyone heard anything about the Assistant Coach position, candidates, timeline?

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Did anyone attend the UMass Lowell Friends/Alumni Hockey Golf Classic today? How was the turnout, any new information about the program?

At the post-golf tourney dinner, Blaise announced that it's not official yet, but the assistant position was offered to and accepted by former UML defenseman Darryl Green.

Congrats to Darryl. Always was a nice classy kid, and hopefully he gets the chance to blossom as a coach here. I do love kids that played for the school going out and recruiting for the school.

From USHR:
Look for UMass-Lowell to officially name former Lowell defenseman Darryl Green as an assistant in the next week or so.

Green, the head hockey coach at Nashua (NH) High School, will be replacing Shawn McEachern, who resigned to take the head coaching position at the Rivers School.

A native of Chatham, Ont., Green played for Lowell for three years, from '00-03. During his first year, he played for Tim Whitehead. His final two years were with current head coach Blaise MacDonald. Green had to sit out his freshman year as he had played six OHL games in '95-96.

After Lowell, Green played a couple of years of minor pro before going into coaching.

At Nashua North, his assistant was former Lawrence Academy head coach Charlie Corey.

First congrats to Shannon Hlebichuk, UML's Field Hockey coach, for being named an AAD at UML. Great for her and for the school.
From USHR:
I'm guessing that Forton now becomes the main recruiter for Lowell?

This isn't meant as a mean comment but I'm starting to lose track of who our AADs are... we have 2, right?
