UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

If the students are being put on the far end does that mean there's going to be some re-arranging of the benches? The original purpose of moving the students was to get them over the opposing keeper.
Unfortunately, can't do it because of how the locker rooms are set up according to what I've been told.

The changes look pretty **** sweet.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Gotta say, I don't like it. Shouldn't be a "first class" section at a college hockey arena. Considering the arena will have trouble making any money at all, and the state is virtually bankrupt, seems like a lot of money to spend when the city is laying off teachers.

1) A lot of other places of this level has rooms and function spaces like this.

2) We already have that at Tsongas but doesn't appear as nice. I feel for you though... that video reminded me or the DC mid-level socialites ($100K+ salary types) that I see around here and not people I'd ever see at a Lowell game.

3) This will also be there for other events and functions. Maybe you don't want it for the rock concert... but if a symphony or something plays at Lowell then you'll want it. It'll also likely return on its investment which is the bottom line.

4) City is not the university.

----

les, another way around that would be to get some fans to get season tickets in the section next to the improved club space.

Oh... and for the love of God... if the opposing fans are put behind any net everybody should resign out of shame.

----

Any comments on the other visuals? I know I had a thing or two in mind when i heard we were going to buy the arena. I know they put in some temporary removable stuff on the concourse... any more permanent additions and/or re-painting?

What is your problem? The City (State) owned the Arena and lost money hand over fist by giving the Devils a sweetheart deal. The University (Marty) comes in and wants to actually make money.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

the problem with the sections is purely logistical. there's no way to put a club with its own entry point at ground level on that side of the rink. anyone that has been throughout the downstairs there knows that's where the lowell dressing room/gym/offices are when you enter the building, and the lowell devils' locker room is where the restaurant would have to go. they don't want VIPs having to walk through the riff-raff too much, and i get that.

that's also why they can't stick the student section in its current end, as others have said. does it make a lot of sense from an atmosphere perspective? no. but the school is publicly funded and just bought and made upgrades to an entire arena. their primary concern is and should be money, at least until they get into the black.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Asking out of ignorance, but how big of a deal would it be to just switch what side Lowell shoots twice at?

Then you'd have to switch benches to avoid having the long change twice. But as UMLFan said, they can't do that because of the locker room situation.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Just wait until the first game of the year when they realize how dumb it was to switch the fan section. The only thing I like about it is maybe that the fans could help us get behind our new rookie goalie. Plus, these students next year will probably try to sit where Lowell shoots twice and get kicked out. The upside to all of this is maybe Drake will notice our arena is nicer and come back:D :D

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

I've already made my opinion known to Scott D. This is a bad move for game atmosphere and energy, but as Goon stated, this is and forever will be about $$. UML is notorious for short changing the students in all things hockey related, ( see the Tully Forum game) but this especially sucks considering how loud and packed the section was last year.

I think this is a bit over the top. I can see your point but I don't think they are purposely trying to screw the students. The Tully was a long time ago. Since then there has been a change of staff and a much more positive attitude toward the students from what I can see. It seems to me they value the students and make efforts to encourage them to come/participate. Considering the uphill battle they had to try to convince certain powers that be to value the students, I give them kudos. I think it is unfair to paint the whole thing black.

I don't agree with leaving the opposing goalie in the gentle end of the rink but I must admit that I am psyched to be closer to the students. They are fun to watch and I will be able to hear what they are doing now.

Scott did post that they are not giving the 1500 preferred seats right there. I am glad about that. there are only 300.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

I like the changes. Looking forward to being at all the games next year.
The scoreboard will be huge, but like how they are taking this to the next level.....first class, and I think that is only positive for the program. For the people picking on it being about $$$.....sure it is. But, look at BU, UNH, BC, etc.....they all generate big bucks, and it certainly helps those programs.

To be honest, I think the getting on the goalie thing is really over rated.
I honestly don't think that makes the goalie play worse.....those guys hardly pay attention to anything in the stands. Plus goalies are pretty thick skinned in nature due to the position they are playing....I wouldn't put too much stock into that. If anything it gets that more fired up to play harder. The whole sieve thing IMHO is up there with the Yankees suck chant.....does nothing for me.......and I am a huge Red Sox fan!;)

Well, there was the time that they had the girl blow up doll and slammed it against the glass when the Maine goalie was skating back and forth toward each side. You could see the double take from the back of the rink. Without a doubt the funniest thing I have ever seen at a sporting event.:D

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

I think a good crowd can get in a goalie's head... You just have to have the right angle or know his weaknesses :)

edit: Was it BU that obtained Hutton's phone number via facebook?

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

What happened at the old Tully forum....and trust me...a crowd can make a goalie mess up. I remember the Colgate game this year the goalie was almost in tears. But then again, you have idiotic fans who scream "Hey Darling, how much you pay for that haircut"...which doesn't do anything

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

The two games at the Tully a couple of years back against Maine were what I was referencing. Everyone was very excited, and then the word came out that student tickets would be limited and, if my memory serves me, handed out via raffle. The Connector did a feature on it and surprise, Peter Casey changed his mind. He was a jerk to boot. It just seems like the students are always the ones with the short end of the stick in these situations. I'm not a student anymore, but after all we went through while I was there, these kind of things jerk my chain.

I remember it but Peter Casey isn't running that part anymore. The guys now do a great job. The situation may not be optimal but I have faith that they will do their best to make lemons out of lemonade. I think they care a great deal about the students. Great student section translates into better tix sales later when folks graduate.

you're going to have to leave your girl friend at home and just bring your cow bell.
