Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Well that was ugly. But a win. Not a bad crowd considering ... but a pretty flat environment overall. Nice to see Brickler get his first goal (even if it doesn't count overall).

Three goals given up in less than 2 minutes though isn't good at all. And that's the second time in a week that they've given up goals one after another very very quickly.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Merrimack definitely has come back to earth since they hit the #1 ranking ... losing again today at BU 4-2. This now means they've played as many league games as Lowell has, but are only one point up on the River Hawks for third place in the league.

UML's pretty good for diving after a high ranking too. Hope we can avoid that this year.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

The team got an hour of ice time at Fenway this morning, and past players and donors to the program were also invited to attend. This was followed by lunch in the EMC Club at Fenway. I took a bunch of pictures of what turned out to be just an awesome experience for everyone there: Frozen Fenway Skate

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Some thoughts...

As far as the game, it was nice to see them take advantage of the Russian team early but another meltdown at the end of the second period in as many games was a bit disconcerting. Where this was a paid admission on a Thursday, really not surprised of the low turnout/lack of atmosphere for a game that doesn't matter in the standings. The brew-ha-ha at the end is why I don't like the exhibition games against the international teams because there is no recourse in fighting for the national teams unlike in the NCAA. Good to be at the rink on Thursday but I really couldn't get into it.

Unfortunately, most people outside of New England don't even know the difference between UMass-Amherst & UMass-Lowell and refer to us as "UMass" The reality is that people away from the Northeast will recognize Dartmouth and/or RPI much quicker than UML and that's a fact that won't change. The biggest issue with TV is sometimes you have to go get it instead of waiting for it to come to you. We all know that Lowell hasn't been consistent at all since the middle 1990's and that the main reason that we don't get many TV games. It's a good thing we have a professional-quality arena so we get a game each year. At the same time, if the Merrimack's of the world can get a four or five game TV contract, we should be able at least equal this. National TV will come but this will take two or three straight years of home-ice appearances before we see our school consistently. As I've mentioned a few posts ago, this school doesn't have the technical resources to get a in-season championship game via radio in a timely manner. For a school that is technologically-based, that's a royal embarrassment.

You know, I don't know if that's a travel radio box issue or if its the radio station... I really suspect the latter. I've been listening for 11 years now... I assume they haven't upgraded their equipment at all during that time... 'cause it sure seems like it. Student radio doesn't run into these problems.

In the various games I've watched on B2, the 'in studio sports report' has not been heard.

Has anyone brought the poor quality up to Marty? He can't fix what he doesn't know about.

I, personally, assume that with B2 they get it straight from the arena... I'd also suspect that B2 audio doesn't cut out when WUML cuts out but I don't know that... you hear some of Bob and Chaz's idle chatter as well as all in-game inserts... I would strongly suspect that Bob has those/handles those all on hand either with a series of tapes or a computer.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I'd like to send a complaint about these two teams playing at Fenway right now. Wow is this boring.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Bertagna on the next Frozen Fenway: Lowell, PC and 'Mack haven't participated and want to. "But at the same time you have to sell tickets."”

Average home attendance this year: UNH: 5,178. Lowell 5,087. Amherst 4,448. Maine 4,307. Vermont 3,492.

**** Bertagna. What an absolute idiot. If you don't believe Bertagna is both clueless about his league and firmly anti-Lowell at this point you're blind.

Along with Merrimack having a ten-game sellout streak for an arena of 2500 and a school size of 3000. Yeah, that's out of touch.

LOL...Goumas scores on the 3x5 SH plus gives the HR sign.

The fact that UNH got to celebrate for about two seconds and then gave up two goals ... just made me happy. Yes, I'm rooting for UNH at this point because Maine is close behind us ... but the arrogance of the Big Four makes me want all of them to fail.

Maine wins it in OT after giving up a 2 goal lead in the 3rd. The Black Bears are on a roll, 7-1-1 in their last 9 games.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Just an absolutely pathetic display of hockey all around. And yes, I know what it looks like. I saw UMass Lowell play last year. No staying at a Holiday Inn Express required.

Completely agree but he considers anything like this a 'conspiracy theory' and just dismisses it out of hand.

I'd like to hear Dana or Marty call Bertagna out on this bull**** and publicly stand up for the university and the program.

I'm sure Fenway is looking at our less than impressive Boston garden figures as well... Bertagna isn't driving this bus... It's Fenway/Red Sox.

Of course there is an element of bias... but this all gets to the origins.... Is this supposed to be a service to Hockey East or a PR/profit venture for the red sox. It isn't to screw Lowell for their own sake... Do we think we could fill butts in seats.

Has anybody, aside from harangues, actually tried to communicate with our athletic office and their take?

Maybe the correct answer is that you do it yourself. It's not Fenway, but we do have a ballpark ;). Merrimack/Lowell at LeLacheur Park?? :D :p
