UML '09/'10 Season Thread

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

Dissapointing...but I'm thinking Sat night in the Back Bay might be something to see.

Its on NESN, right? I'll find a bar for that game. I've toyed with the idea of taking the Friday night train to Boston for one of these Boston games and then returning to DC Sunday. I highly doubt I'll this year... it kills me not being in the area. I love being in the DC area and its a great opportunity for myself but I'd love to be around.

Echoing Goon... I might not be around as long as some of these other guys... I only started at Lowell in 2000 but I've seen some crummy teams and I've seen good teams. I think my mistake was coming full on board in that year we started 17-3-1. I knew they weren't all going to be like that (especially when you know the league history) but that year hurt because they were good enough to be there but we had the Olympics cut our team down significantly.

If you told me we would be crap this year I could take it... fair weather fans only show up when they're good... not when we finish last in the league (2003... where we didn't win a league game until a day before my birthday beating Merrimack on a Tuesday night)... not when we had to forfeit the middle part of our season my senior year (though I didn't go to the next game due to lack of ride and being flat out angry). Not when the 2006 team failed to materialize.

As far as I understand it we're supposed to be good... this start means one of three things, 1) dumb luck... we ascribe to much to it... something I tend to mention in a probability lecture, 2) we aren't as good as we thought... probably this is true, 3) we are as good but we aren't trying hard enough... I hope this is true because it means we can be there but its frustrating because that means that the team is slacking off.

So, when are they going to put together their 6-7 game winning streak? Why are they waiting to do so?

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

i think you'll find most supporters of this team have been around forever and, while they are incredibly frustrated by the easy wins this team has watched go by, to call them fairweather is silly. i've missed maybe 10 home games since i started going to games in 1993-94. monty has probably been around almost as long as i have.

expressing concern is not quite the same thing as giving up the ship.

Didnt say you were one of them. Im not calling anyone out,. But this team isnt done by a long shot, they just dont know how to handle expectations. Not knowing how to win when your supposed is alot tougher then winning when your not supposed to. Its called pressure. watch the NFL playoffs, there will be alot of teams that are supposed to win because they won all year that wont. and some that will rise to the occasion. These kids will rise when it matters most. But the pairwise rankings are a tough thing to get past if you don't win your league.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

I dont like predictions. but having placed my foot in my mouth, I will say this; I think they will win 4-5 for the rest of Jan, 4-5 in Feb, and hopefully 2 in March before the playoffs. even on my low that gives them 10 more wins before the playoffs, which is 21 they will need to make the Hockey East finals win of loose to make the tournament.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

Lowell is currently tied for 17th in the CHN pairwise ranking.

which is the long and short of my initial rant... we're on the cusp... but we can't just count on hitting a hot streak and getting ourselves over. I haven't looked at things beyond hockey east... but seeing a 13-4-? Quinnipiac team so low tells me that the WCHA/CCHA is going to be very dominant and that dominance only gets stronger as the year goes on and they play more games against each others which count as TUC games. The killer of a weak conference OOC is that there is a lower RPI for the conference (in general) which means fewer members of your league are TUC teams. Earlier season PWR calculations don't have TUC taken into account as you need at least 10 games against teams (other than the one in the current pair) whom are TUC teams.

This is going to be an uphill battle.

UMass is currently tied for 12th, which makes next weekends home and home series huge for both times in pairwise, and in the standings. UMass sits one point ahead of Lowell right now, but a good/bad weekend by either could certainly change things. It's going to be crucial for both of them to play a solid 60 minutes when they meet as they both need to start getting quality wins if either wants to make a run at the HE title or the NCAA tournament.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

Any word on how long Matt Ferreira will be out?
I was told that Ferreira has a high ankle sprain, with no timetable for a return right now. The person I talked to had no additional info on Wright.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

i dunno if it was ever confirmed exactly what school tim carr transferred to, but the answer is oswego state

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

This team is frustrating to say the least but there are 17 HE games left and I feel they can win/take points in at least 11-13 of those games.

The next 4 games are huge.

@UNH
@Northeastern
@UMass
UMass

2009 is over and its the start of a new year.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

my only solace right now is that Lowell has always been a second half team...but, truth be told, it's not that comforting.

Goon hit it on the head earlier. There are no moral victories. No "hey we played well, we'll get them next time." It's wins or nothing. It doesn't matter if Lowell dominates for 57 minutes and out shoots the other team 47-2. If it doesn't result in a win, it doesn't mean squat.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

I'm still not sure as to why this team consistently seems to come out flat to start off games either.

BTW, same this on the UMass blog (giving credit) ... a BC blog did a look at the HE teams through the decade.

Edit to add: I was commenting to a couple of people during the game on Sunday night that Campbell seems like he's just disappeared. Looking up his stats, he has 1 goal in his last 8 games now. No assists. Ouch.

Look for the possibility of an exciting new addition to the Tsongas the night of January 16 vs UMass Amherst.

It would be nice to get a big crowd in for that game too. It seems like the crowds have dropped off a little over the last 3 home games.
