UML '09/'10 Season Thread

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

I don't really like to make fun of a team when it's down ... but wow, UMass got smoked 7-3 by BU tonight, even though they had a whopping 12 power plays (and three 5-on-3s according to what I heard).

Not only that, the last goal they gave up was a shorty on a 6-on-3, and it was scored by Gryba. That's just bad all around.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

Nice return from the break! The team came out hard and fast in the FIRST period! HC was good at getting the puck out of their end... Hopefully they can put away NE tonight! Good Job!

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

let's not get ahead of ourselves. 3-0 is almost not good enough of a win. let's see if lowell wins tonight before making any grand pronouncements

Who's getting ahead of themselves? They did alright. They won. Does your glass have a hole in the bottom of it?

Mine does. Take a look at the rest of the league's non-conference performance... pretty bad. Hockey East will likely only get 1-3 NCAA spots this year. Lowell won't be one of them unless they play out of their mind for the next 2 months. We can file this team in the "could have, great potential, didn't do it" circular file.

The whole season sets the table for the next day. If you go 7-1 to start and 1-7 to end you go 8-8... if you go 1-7 to start and 7-1 to end you go 8-8. You can't just start 1-7 and think you'll finish 8-8. You can't start 7-1 and just figure you won't finish 8-8.

Its one thing to use these things (the "marathon not a sprint" perspective) as a tool to get past disappointment... its another to decrease what you need to do in-game because you can make up for it later.

We aren't going to make the NCAA tournament with the current perspectives and attitudes of our players. No heart, no desire. That isn't true of all them... but it never needs to be. If they start to play like they mean it then I'll revise my opinions.

pretty sure "great" and "alright" are not the same thing.

how'd they do tonight? oh right. they were feckless in the first and undisciplined in the third. adds up to a 2-1 loss to a crap team. it's unacceptable the way they do this.

Um, I wasn't 'getting ahead of myself' and neither was mike. Last night happened after the comments regarding the game w HC. I prefer to not waste my time dissing them until the deserve it altho from what I hear they played pretty well last night but couldn't put it in the net. I wasn't there- so if you disagree I will defer.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

This team is about as frustrating to watch as is possible. They consistently come out flat (they SUPPOSEDLY had three shots in the first yesterday). Then they try and use talent to win the games, which has worked at times, and could have last night if Rawlings hadn't played so well. You could argue some of the penalties, but most of them were called right and were stupid plays. On the other hand, NU got away with a couple as well.

It's sad to think that even with all that, they lost due to a bad goal.

My expectations for this team are ratcheting down at this point. I still think they should get home ice for the HE tournament, but that's a question at this point.

they're 11-7-1 with losses to 9-8-5 Nebraska-Omaha, 5-9-3 BU, 7-9-1 Providence, 5-8-2 Princeton and now 8-8-1 Northeastern.

playing well and not putting the puck in the net ends up looking the same on a won-lost record as playing like garbage, especially in a year where moral victories can no longer cut it. this isn't the river hawks of two years ago, where we could look at a one-goal loss and say "they were so close." these games shouldn't be close. they should be blowouts. lowell should be KILLING the teams to which they've lost this season, and they're not.

so yes, they deserve it

At least they beat the OOC team, that helps an otherwise fairly poor tournament performance by HE squads - and helps the NCAA picture a bit

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

Snwbrdr, your HE team did alright in holiday tournament and OOC play.

I noted with interest the misconduct penalty by team captain Ben Holmstrom in the last minute of a one-goal game. Good sign - firing up the team, or bad sign - frustrated and undisciplined by a team leader?

Not intended as a flame here. It's now time for our teams to play and for us to watch and root.

The summers and preseasons are long, so let's enjoy the hockey season. There's a lot of hockey to be played.

Grantfan, isnt Snwbrdr's team also your team? I thought you were both Vermont fans? I'm confused...

The ref didn't like his New Year's greetings, either that or it was because Ben was telling him exactly what he thought about the officiating for the game. (Yes, Lowell took a LOT of stupid penalties, but a few of the calls were a bit marginal)

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

Lowell has 17 games to go in the regular season. Probably going to have to win 11 or 12 of them and then a couple in the HE playoffs if they want to make the NCAA tourney.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread

How many teams in the country have more than 11 wins? (9). This team can and will go on a 6-7 game winning streak,. but some people are folding up the tents just like last year at this time, and then when they got it together jumped back on the band wagon, so either be against them and say u think they suck or just support them all the way, not only when they win, (Its called fair weather fans, and it seems like there are alot of them)

i think you'll find most supporters of this team have been around forever and, while they are incredibly frustrated by the easy wins this team has watched go by, to call them fairweather is silly. i've missed maybe 10 home games since i started going to games in 1993-94. monty has probably been around almost as long as i have.

expressing concern is not quite the same thing as giving up the ship.

To be fair, it was an ENG on an defensive-zone clear. Still ridiculous.
