UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

I don't know what was said but there was a lot of soul-searching was made during this game tonight, which had it own degree of oddities.

Maine's first goal tonight probaby the worst goal I've seen live since the 180' debacle that Peter Vetri had at UNH many years ago where the puck when it with about 1:00 remaining in regulaton.

Maine still had many offensive chances, but the key was that Lowell got to some of those loose pucks. Lowell cleaned up a lot of the rebounds that Maine was trying to get to like last night.

Most of all, Kory Falite took the team on his shoulders and placed all of the offensive on him, scoring twice in the third and assisting on the second goal in the period.

Carter Hutton made an immense save during the third period and was the better goaltender on the evening.

So, after 15 unsuccessful tries in this barn, I've seen a win at Alfond.

Running through a few scenarios, we still have about a 20% change of home ice. I still think we are coming back up here to Maine 40% and also BU at 40%

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

its good to see uml respond with a win on Saturday after Friday's beating. Its good to see them shut down that first line for Maine. overall its a great win for Lowell. lets hope they can take two from Providence next weekend.
"shut down," "allow two goals from." whatever.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

Was a fun game to listen to. Hope they don't get too confident. I think they have come out poorly this season against teams that are considered "weaker". They play better against "strong" teams. Four points next weekend is not guaranteed!

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

Four games left. Two against the last place team in HE, one at home, one on the road. Two games at home against the current #9 team in HE.

Should be interesting...

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

You guys had a totally different team out there last night. I thought a big moment in the game was right before Lowell scored their first goal because Darling made a big save.

if they don't win all four games they don't deserve to make the playoffs.

I won't argue about the deserving to make the playoffs or not, but winning all four gives them a good shot to get home ice. I'm still holding out hope!

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

I don't see any way UML doesn't sweep PC this weekend if the River Hawks play anywhere near to their potential. PC has been bad to begin with and now have nothing to play for. I know I might be in the minority as a MC fan, but I've always rooted for UML to do well.

Trying to be neutral, Merrimack and Lowell seem to have the easiest roads home out of the bottom four teams competing for the playoff spots. UMass-Amherst only has three games left, all on road against top 3 teams. UVM played well this weekend, but is hurting with injuries.

Lowell has had a tough time with Providence the past few years ... no matter who's hot at the time.

Watching the BC/NU game ... and I feel dirty but I'm rooting for BC. Or a tie at the worst.

I give the team a lot of credit for hanging in there after that first goal. The way the puck went in it look like a continuation of the Friday night game.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

If you tivo'd the NU/BC game don't read further.

With BC winning today, they jump into second at 28 points. UNH is already not catchable, and I think BC has now reached that point.

Maine has 26 points, BU 24, NU 23, UMass is tied with Lowell at 22, Merrimack at 21, and UVM has 20. UMass has one game in hand on all but Merrimack, who has two games in hand on UMass and one on everyone else. They'll be playing BC on Tuesday.

To me, Lowell has to take at least 6 of the remaining eight. That would put them at 28. Maine has the tiebreaker on Lowell, so they'll probably finish ahead of us, leaving one home-ice spot. BU finishes with two at Vermont and a home and home against NU. They also own the tie-breaker against Lowell. UMass has three away games, one @ BC and two at Maine. They're in trouble as far as I'm concerned. Northeastern has two home and homes left, against league leaders UNH and BU. We already know who Lowell ends with.

Pure speculation on my part:
BU grabs four out of eight possible points, leaving them at 28. NU takes only two (maybe three), but they end at 25. UMass doesn't take any points in their remaining games, though I could see them taking one...

It's going to be a fun two weeks of hockey.

UMass is not only in trouble, they are in deep "do-do" since I can't use the word I want. I don't think they win any of their three remaining games.

The Maine - Merrimack series is intriguing along with the BU - Vermont series. If we want to get home ice, we have to "root" for the home teams. Realistically, we can't catch BC so it's Maine and BU that we have to catch from behind and I think it's BU that it the only one we have the best chance catching. If Maine and BU do sweep this weekend, I don't think we can get home ice without a lot of help and us running the table. We should be able to take all six points at home if we play like we did last night and not like on Friday.

For this week, the game that truly concerns me is the game at PC. The River Hawks haven't fare too well down there over the past few years, just 1-5-1 since 2005-2006 and the last win at PC coming on Jan. 15, 2006. On the plus side, we have beaten PC the last three times at Tsongas, even though it's been the first time PC has been to Lowell in almost a year and a half. For whatever reason, Lowell has a very difficult time with the physical and at times, chippy play of the Friars. If we allow them to hang around, it could mean trouble for us. Get to the Friars early and we should be fine.

It's going to be a fun but long two weeks. :D :p

Problem is a lot of times is that this team doesn't show up against Providence.... especially as these games have rarely been down the stretch but rather the quiet nights of the hockey east schedule.

Lowell doesn't come out to play then they will get what they deserve.

bMy Brain hurts thinking of all the permutations. I think I will just stay oblifvious to the possibilities for now so I can't be disappointed and just do one game at a time.

Its not worth it to be honest. The tie-breaker situations alone are impossible to figure. General rule of thumb, if we're behind a bunch of teams then the teams in front of us will have to win games against other teams in front of us so we can't just leapfrog immediately if we win.

Yes, even on Sunday morning (Feb 28th), the scenarios are going to be bad. In fact, they could be even worse depending on the results of this weekend.

What is known...Providence has been elminated, we can't win HE, and we could be playing in any city (including Lowell and North Andover --wouldn't that be a kick, going to Merrimack for the HE playoffs). It is still possible for us to miss the HE playoffs via mathematics but the split in Maine substantially helped this from being a bigger problem. Home ice is possible but we don't control our fate and need some help.

Roll dice, you may have better odds :p I still have UML Theory #865 in my head though, we always play Maine or BU at some point in the playoffs.

I believe Lowell clinches a spot in the playoffs if they get 3 more points than UVM this weekend.
