Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II
My, my, my where to begin...
Since I was up in Maine this weekend, a few points on the games.
Friday night was one of the best games of the season...battling for loose pucks, playing the system to near-perfection, and in the end, finding a way to win the game. It was one of the best games they have playing this season. Saturday was a complete no-show and we don't have to dwell on this. Sunday was the icing on the cake, a scared, timid looking team that was embarrassed in the shot totals, 16-5 I believe. Carter Hutton (who may have records that are untouchable) kept them in the game.
When Lowell scored the second goal, I had a good feeling about the game. I thought it was finally going to be the step they needed to break this season's long scoring funk. When the 4x4 penalty occurred, I was hoping that they would kill it because that was the game. Once Maine scored, I knew the game was over, it was a just a matter of how they were going to lose the game by one goal.
I've talked about that I can't stand "systems" in hockey and that dump and chase gets you nowhere over the long haul unless you have the talent to do so. Sure, Lowell has the defense depth but to one poster, it didn't have the offensive depth. Last night I was within an earshot of Bob's post game show and he mentioned one of the key points why we are sitting in our homes moping...over the past ten (10) years, there have been two bona-fide snipers, Ed McGrane (darn spellchecker

and Ben Walter. No disrespect to the current seniors or alum but that's as true a statement as anyone can make.
There's no doubt that a lot of players had career years in the previous campaign but there was a lot of underachieving. The coaches and players equally share responsibility in this debacle; I have to fault the coaches for most of this weekend. When you have a "backup sieve" (joke for Maine folks...Wilson had a career weekend and was the MVP of the series) not only beat you in a playoff series but shut you out in the middle game is a flat out embarrassment. Lowell made this kid look like, well Carter Hutton. He had maybe two game-savers all weekend long.
Last week, I took a lot of heat and crap for my "Maine will win" post and was praying that I would eat crow for this week for my pick of Maine to win the series. I was 4:50 away from that. Let's be honest, Tim Whitehead had owned UML since his unceremonious departure nine years ago and this is one of the most irking things I've seen with the Lowell program save the near elimination of the program. I believe this provoked some of the comments that we've seen including my "ha ha" from early this morning. In reality, the Black Bears have been "our daddy" to quote Pedro.
Blaise McDonald is probably the best non-faculty ambassador that this University has ever seen. The energy and excitement that he has almost single-handedly brought to the Lowell community is priceless. He is human and made a giant mistake (and no, I wasn't calling for his head either during that unfortunate incident.) In fairness, there were a lot of things that happened to this team that were beyond the team's control. He, like many others, recovered admirably.
It's sad, because there is no gray area in record. Lowell has not hosted a playoff series since 2002 and been to the NCAA since 1996. We have had four teams that were NCAA-capable but failed to reach on all accounts. He's had ample time to establish a program and while it's gotten exponentally better, the limit is zero at the end of the day. I said it at the beginning of the year, if this goes bad, people would be looking for his head. Granted, there is the argument that who would replace him but at Patronick said, at some point, it's got to be about winning to keep fannies in the seats and put to bed the constant review of our program and yes, you can put me in that camp. I have doubts where or not that we can crack the big time, with or without Blaise. The question in my mind is how long you give him, but that's for an off season discussion. Needless to say, I don't have a good answer.
About trash-talking with other fans...there is a reason why I don't get into it and last night was a good example. My AP history teacher said it best, you can talk trash, but you better be able to back it up. UVM is another "system" team but still found a way to put nearly a full deck of cards on Foster last night (underrated goalie BTW) and won 1-0.
It's no secret that Maine and BU have ended our season over the past many years. They know our system, trap us and say...beat us with offense, because you don't have what we got. You are not going to beat offensive teams like this 1-0 or 2-1. This is why we always lose to these ding-dongs by one measly goal and feels like one of my favorite movies...Groundhog Day. A different way of getting there but it's the same one-goal game, same loss in the end.
I'll be there for the banquet, and next year for campaign number 17. While I'm hopeful that it won't be a 20-loss season, I don't think for a minute we will be in contention for home ice. But, this is why they play the games.
Again, best of luck to our seniors.
