UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

gotta say...dissapointed. I try not to take it too seriously, as others do, because after all, i don't strap on skates and make a fool of myself in front of 4000 people. But to see so many games where this team just didn't show up was just unacceptable. That's a leadership problem.

We need a goalie. (Way to plan ahead.) We need a shooter. Be interesting to watch and see who chooses to drop out ....

I'll probably wait til the last minute to buy tickets next year.

Lowell Hockey- It is what it is.

I'll renew my season tickets when the invoice shows up in the mail. As I said in my last post........Next year is going to be a struggle but I think they can sneak into 7th or 8th place and play in the Quarter Finals.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

The thing that has impressed me most over the past couple seasons is the team defense top to bottom, everybody bought in to the system. That comes from quality coaching, but when it comes to scoring goals, the lack of depth was quite glaring. When compared to some of the more successful teams in the past, there had always been balanced scoring from at least three lines, can't say that about this year. Three or four guys can't carry a whole squad offensively.

I thought the effort was there in the last two weeks though, just not enough touch when the opportunities arose. Dissapointing for the fans as well as the players.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

I need some closure here.

I graduated in '94 and witnessed some horrific teams in my freshman/sophomore years and some **** good teams in my junior/senior years.

We played at Tully Forum for goodness sakes. Had to get in the car, drive down the Connector, and pay to get in.

If Merrimack can get a guy like DeCosta then Lowell can do better. Tsongas>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Volpe/Schneider.

Love or hate Marty but he is doing a lot for ULowell athletics. I'm in for the long haul.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

My, my, my where to begin...

Since I was up in Maine this weekend, a few points on the games.

Friday night was one of the best games of the season...battling for loose pucks, playing the system to near-perfection, and in the end, finding a way to win the game. It was one of the best games they have playing this season. Saturday was a complete no-show and we don't have to dwell on this. Sunday was the icing on the cake, a scared, timid looking team that was embarrassed in the shot totals, 16-5 I believe. Carter Hutton (who may have records that are untouchable) kept them in the game.

When Lowell scored the second goal, I had a good feeling about the game. I thought it was finally going to be the step they needed to break this season's long scoring funk. When the 4x4 penalty occurred, I was hoping that they would kill it because that was the game. Once Maine scored, I knew the game was over, it was a just a matter of how they were going to lose the game by one goal.

I've talked about that I can't stand "systems" in hockey and that dump and chase gets you nowhere over the long haul unless you have the talent to do so. Sure, Lowell has the defense depth but to one poster, it didn't have the offensive depth. Last night I was within an earshot of Bob's post game show and he mentioned one of the key points why we are sitting in our homes moping...over the past ten (10) years, there have been two bona-fide snipers, Ed McGrane (darn spellchecker :) and Ben Walter. No disrespect to the current seniors or alum but that's as true a statement as anyone can make.

There's no doubt that a lot of players had career years in the previous campaign but there was a lot of underachieving. The coaches and players equally share responsibility in this debacle; I have to fault the coaches for most of this weekend. When you have a "backup sieve" (joke for Maine folks...Wilson had a career weekend and was the MVP of the series) not only beat you in a playoff series but shut you out in the middle game is a flat out embarrassment. Lowell made this kid look like, well Carter Hutton. He had maybe two game-savers all weekend long.

Last week, I took a lot of heat and crap for my "Maine will win" post and was praying that I would eat crow for this week for my pick of Maine to win the series. I was 4:50 away from that. Let's be honest, Tim Whitehead had owned UML since his unceremonious departure nine years ago and this is one of the most irking things I've seen with the Lowell program save the near elimination of the program. I believe this provoked some of the comments that we've seen including my "ha ha" from early this morning. In reality, the Black Bears have been "our daddy" to quote Pedro.

Blaise McDonald is probably the best non-faculty ambassador that this University has ever seen. The energy and excitement that he has almost single-handedly brought to the Lowell community is priceless. He is human and made a giant mistake (and no, I wasn't calling for his head either during that unfortunate incident.) In fairness, there were a lot of things that happened to this team that were beyond the team's control. He, like many others, recovered admirably.

It's sad, because there is no gray area in record. Lowell has not hosted a playoff series since 2002 and been to the NCAA since 1996. We have had four teams that were NCAA-capable but failed to reach on all accounts. He's had ample time to establish a program and while it's gotten exponentally better, the limit is zero at the end of the day. I said it at the beginning of the year, if this goes bad, people would be looking for his head. Granted, there is the argument that who would replace him but at Patronick said, at some point, it's got to be about winning to keep fannies in the seats and put to bed the constant review of our program and yes, you can put me in that camp. I have doubts where or not that we can crack the big time, with or without Blaise. The question in my mind is how long you give him, but that's for an off season discussion. Needless to say, I don't have a good answer.

About trash-talking with other fans...there is a reason why I don't get into it and last night was a good example. My AP history teacher said it best, you can talk trash, but you better be able to back it up. UVM is another "system" team but still found a way to put nearly a full deck of cards on Foster last night (underrated goalie BTW) and won 1-0.

It's no secret that Maine and BU have ended our season over the past many years. They know our system, trap us and say...beat us with offense, because you don't have what we got. You are not going to beat offensive teams like this 1-0 or 2-1. This is why we always lose to these ding-dongs by one measly goal and feels like one of my favorite movies...Groundhog Day. A different way of getting there but it's the same one-goal game, same loss in the end.

I'll be there for the banquet, and next year for campaign number 17. While I'm hopeful that it won't be a 20-loss season, I don't think for a minute we will be in contention for home ice. But, this is why they play the games.

Again, best of luck to our seniors.

I gave you crap for that negative fatalism crap. You did that earlier in the season too and you turned out to be wrong. Too many around here say "we're going to Maine we're ****ed"... turned out... no, we went to maine... we took the first game, lost in OT in the 3rd, and at no time did the mystique overwhelm but rather out team failed to show as it has through the season. That building wasn't our widow-maker... that we owned ourselves and we almost didn't even do that. We're 3-3 in the last two years up in Orono. Granted that's not what we wanted but that place shouldn't scare anybody. That team shouldn't scare anybody.

Point being, my tact had nothing to do with what was likely. Too many people around here are willing to embrace failure prima facie. You know, if you're going to embrace the idea of failure then why bother? Do it out of habit?! There's no point in wallowing in failure because I don't want to see us embrace it.

I'm sorry, that building (even half empty) had everything to do with last night loss as the team failing to show up...to this Lowell fan when they got the tying goal for the second time, you got the feeling it was all over. You're right, that building and team shouldn't scare anyone but we sure played scared at many points during the weekend. However, it's all fair enough, we'll agree to disagree and there nothing wrong with that.

Winning with consistency will put an end to the talk. Win playoff series against the BU, BC, UNH, or Maine's of the world. I'll be the first person to say I'm wrong and to give credit where credit it due. Sure, we are 3-3 in Orono over the past two years...but they don't make banners or clinch NCAA berths for that.

This whole, "it's the building" thing is absolutely the dumbest thing I've ever heard. It's just making excuses for why the team didn't win.

They are something like 16-34-5 or something like that in Maine...face it some teams perform in some buildings and some don't.

But, I'm not offerring that as an excuse...the three main reasons they lost.

  1. Most of them didn't show up offensively.
  2. They got schooled by a backup sieve.
  3. They were severely outcoached in Game 2 and most of Game 3.

People can interpret or sugar-coated this all they like but the season is over. I'm moving onto to the off-season thread
