UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Now that's the kind of intensity, for the entire game, that I was referring to that is required of Wilson and that she is capable of playing with. And when the full effort is there good things happen. The hat trick looks good on her...especially the second and third goals...beautiful. Not sure why Lacquette passed the puck to Wilson for Wilson's first goal instead of shooting it herself...their stick blades didn't look to be more than a foot apart at the most but it worked.

Cournoyer with 3 assists...very nice.

Lacquette looks strong and quite comfortable...sort of an instant fit with the 'Dogs...shoots like a man...nice to see. Beautiful, accurate shots by Winberg (on the UND defenceman's unfortunate fall just inside her blueline that turned the puck over to Winberg for the shorthanded goal with Thibault riding shotgun) and by Irwin for their two goals.

I wonder why Idalski didn't pull Ney after the 4th goal...it was clearly not her night.

Seems the Sioux caught the 'Dogs contagion from last week...couldn't score, although they didn't have many good opportunities. Hopefully the 'Dogs have fully divested themselves of said disease.

I hope J.Lam is ok...it didn't look good for a while after she tumbled and collided with the post on the breakaway with about 3 minutes left in the game.

Did the Sioux have a hangover from last weekend's scoring binge? Something tells me that tomorrow's game will be different.

I forgot...ditto for McParland on her goal...nice to see them shooting with authority and conviction today.

Good job tonight Dawgz.... that's more like it. Wanna be a bulldog baby!

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Nice rope-a-dope by UND who looked completely flat except for the first 5 minutes and the last 3 minutes.

For UMD it's "deja vu all over again"...ie:the second game vs BC...same feel to each game...the opponent's play was listless for most of the game...then in the last couple minutes...a reminder that the game is 60 minutes long.

To Ney's credit she had a normal game and shook last night off. A bit surprised to see her start today.

Wong looked to be low on fuel all weekend.

From what I've seen, Ney is UND's best goalie and gives them the best chance to win. Every WCHA goalie is going to have a game this season where she allows more goals than she'd like. The ability to bounce back will be key to her team's success.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

From what I've seen, Ney is UND's best goalie and gives them the best chance to win.

I agree with that sentiment as well. My comment about being a bit surprised to see her start today was prompted by Idalski's bouncing back and forth between her and Dagfinrud last year...maybe he was just looking for the greatest degree of consistency from one of them and from what I've seen that would be Ney. If so, that might also explain why he didn't give her the hook in the first game.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

So... about that no-goal call off Irwin's skate.

My understanding is that the rules state a goal can go off a skate as long as it's not kicked-- or there's no motion by the foot to kick it in. The replay clearly shows that it wasn't kicked in. Tell me if I'm wrong.

That, and a number of other non-calls by Wrazidlo, helped cost the team one more point. To be fair, ND came out flying on Sun and looked to be a much better team than the day before. But I have to say I have never, ever, ever seen such crap officiating (which we've come to expect in this league) as I did tonight. Makes me wish we had Perrault back. *shudder*

I like the trajectory of the Bulldogs, however. They are clicking more and making good plays and (knock on wood) eliminating the silly mistakes. Looking forward to the series in Minny as there's no question Goldy is on fire right now. I don't think that loss this weekend will phase them one bit.

UPDATE: Reading the Duluth News Tribune where they quote the rules:

The NCAA Ice Hockey handbook on rules and interpretations for 2010-12: Rule 6, Section 18 on goals and assists states:

“A goal shall not be allowed if the puck has been kicked or directed into the goal off an attacking player’s skate or any body part. When in doubt, the goal shall be disallowed. A goal shall be allowed if a puck deflects off an attacking player who is in the act of stopping.”

Replays showed Irwin stopping.

Well said Skate! There was no doubt that Haley was stopping. With the replay available it's simply unbelieveable that the goal was not allowed.

Overall though a great, great showing by UMD this weekend. It was a lot of fun watching Willy come in to her own. I hope it continues . . . it gives UMD two lines with real scoring potential. I hope Kenyon finds her way back to the ice soon as well . . . she adds even more speed and you can't have too much of that!

Feeling some sort of fist pumping satisfaction that we swapped spots with ND and then kicked them down one. Especially after that last game....

Now if Cornell would just get out of the way and we can get the top three spots the way they should be. :p

Good weekend even given yesterday's deja vu moment at the end of the third. They HAVE to stop the late game letdowns. Playing 59:43 of a 60-minute game with a one-goal lead isn't good enough.

McParland is scary good, isn't she? And it was nice to see Katie Wilson putting up some points. Audrey Cournoyer...what happened to her in the off-season? She's really stepped up her game and her game was already good. Posa looks better, Dodge, Kacy being the workhorse that she is. This team has the tools and there doesn't seem to be the confusion that was obvious last year.

What the hell is up with Leah Wrazidlo anyway? Does she have a personal beef with Shannon Miller left over from her playing days at UMD? Geez. I'm not at the same point Skate is where I miss Perrault, but it would be nice for officials to familiarize themselves with the rules before strapping on the whistle.

All in all the Bulldogs have looked better each weekend and I like their chances in Minneapolis. Always a good series there at the home rink. :D

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I deleted the picture on site since it was out of a focus, but Irwin was definitely stopping as the rule states... I mentioned it somewhere else, but I'd like to have referees do like they do in football on fumbles, etc.. let it play out, when the puck goes in the net go review.. don't immediately wave off a goal then have to have clear evidence otherwise (by replay) that there was a kicking motion, or high stick etc.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

By the way.. if this doesn't define 'hooking'.. what does? No call on it

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Because a WCHA official missed a call? Your blood must boil frequently.

Must have stayed on her skates. If she falls you probably get the call.

Spoken like a true champion. Why are your teams uni's so similar to the Bulldog uni's? :)

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

You see that a lot where players control an opponent with the stick held vertically, and you don't have a penalty called. In the rule for hooking, it specifically mentions a horizontal stick. Now I agree with you that the player is just as impeded, but maybe there is something in the role or how it is enforced where the vertical hook is ignored. The defensive player seems to make a point of holding the stick vertically when this occurs. It would be interesting to hear from someone that actually officiates or works with rule enforcement or interpretation.

Arm....It's a hook. :)

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

The two uniforms are very easily distinguished if one is remotely familiar with the teams.

As in no gold in UMD's uniforms, but occasionally you'll see a jewel-like shimmering emanating from the bench. :p
