UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Didn't see today's game, 5-3 loss to the Whitecaps

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

What are the chances of Irwin being back for the series against BC next week?

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Will be catching the games from a distance myself. As for seeing numbers on the ice, 16-Potter(should be retired, all time leading scorer in 3 years) just throwing that out there, 8-Holste (could be retired too) along with 10-Sikio. They were 3 of the anchors in the begining, even with Potter being gone 2 of the first 3 years.

Should be an interesting year overall. WI being tough again, but not sure who will be in the other top spot for competition. ND has been coming on, MN has not played up to there ability in the last 2 years from what I have seen.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Her and Wong both.. Wong wasn't able to go Saturday after playing Friday night, the injury mentioned in this thread I'm assuming tightened overnight maybe.

What are the chances of Irwin being back for the series against BC next week?

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Don't know about the Sunday lineup but today was definitely a Jessica Wong day.. 2 goals 2 assists..her end to end rush in the third period was a really good sign, given the report on here of a torn muscle. The freshmen pretty much played well if not surprisingly well for their first real NCAA experience. Haley Irwin could have scored a couple more than the 1 she did but she seemed just a tiny bit off, with some tight shots just go wide, I sort of expect a hat trick from her Sunday if B.C. plays like they did today. Zoe Hickel has surprising speed, and stick handled her way right around a defenseman to get in the crease with the puck and bury her first collegiate goal. There will be the usual freshmen mistakes now and then with so many first year players, but this team is going to be extremely dangerous come playoff time with Amsoil Arena hosting much of the postseason.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

A UMDBulldogs.com Jessica Wong article titled A CHANGING OF THE GUARD -- JUNIOR DEFENSEMAN JESSICA WONG .. about her switch last year from forward scoring the National Championship overtime goal to captaining the defense as the 'half-back'

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Just curious what happened in the Sunday afternoon game. Terrible shame to lose a game in that manner.

One BC player had the puck in the UMD zone in a corner.. 4 Bulldogs were battling her for the puck.. not sure who the BC player was but UMD had both Lacquette and Villila on defense and they were both in the corner.. they didn't recover in time when the puck finally was worked out and Carpenter was pretty much alone with a lane to shoot on Harss, she put it over the glove hand I believe.. that's my observation of the game winning goal

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Those d-zone breakdowns happen... That's hockey, better now rather than in a must win situation. Harss and Steck have things covered for this season, but what will UMD do for next year? Rely on a freshmen?

Paige Turner, and whoever else Shannon recruits should get a shot to compete for the job.. unless something comes up I wouldn't be surprised to see Paige redshirt this year as the third, and still have 4 years eligibility remaining.. given the quotes out there that they will try to give Steck more ice time this year that could be the plan. After that we'll see when recruits start to be announced

Wait- has she been dressing though? When do you officially redshirt? When conference play starts?

Goalies are still okay if they dress, but they can't take the ice in a game -- I think exhibitions are exempted. Once a player actually competes, then the only redshirt allowed is a medical redshirt that has different rules.

So can a goalie declare a redshirt season at any point of her current schedule (provided that she has not played any minutes)?

I have no idea regarding the procedure. Whether paperwork has to be filed, or if the student athlete is already covered under the "five years to play four season" rule, I don't know. There is a request, appeal, or whatever the process is called for medical redshirts and other special cases like when one is centralized with a national team whether or not they actually make the team.

I don't believe the goaltender ever has the option themselves.. the team does that though as with ARM, the procedure is a mystery.

I'm certain Lacquette was not out on that last goal..there were 2 left handed D out there. Lacquette shoots right if my memory serves me right. Either way, weak side D needs to support or hinge to middle of ice...she was way to far over to support her D partner.

Habs rule!

The two Finns, Villila and Posa, were on D. The worst part of it was that the Bulldogs were on a power play at the time.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I just went back and looked at the score sheet to see and yes, it was 8 and not 88

Yes, it was Villila and word is she was pretty hard on herself for that error.

Tough loss and tough lessons but in the right time of the season, I think. The only way to get better is to have those situations presented and to learn from them and move forward.

Thank you ARM....
