UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

UMD played very well today, with a lot of heart and determination. With a couple more good bounces the Dogs could have pulled this one off, no question. But in the end I thought the Gophers were able to match UMD's top-end talent, and with Kessel they probably had the edge if you were going to compare first lines. I also think the Gophers are a little deeper team overall, at least at this point in the season.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Interesting stat I never really noticed, Audrey Cournoyer has ONLY taken 11 penalties in her 87 games, yet she is 3rd in career goals amongst her teammates , behind Irwin and Wong. She hasn't had a single penalty called on her in the 12 games this season.

I guess I was just trying to find something positive from the Sunday game after losing to Bemidji..even winning the games 'in hand' to the teams above them wouldn't at the moment move UMD up from 6th place in the league. It seems like the team needs someone to step up and take charge on the ice, if not in the locker room right now.. At the moment, it seems the team is searching for that leader or 'spark' that the leader would provide. Without knowing that much about the players' personalities I don't know if Cournoyer's offense translates to that kind of leadership spark or not.. but they're missing something at the moment.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I felt like about 5 people showed up for that game on Sunday. They seriously need to find the ENGAGE button.

Pretty sure Lacasse is younger. If memory serves correctly, she is an '89. Either way, would she not be too old for U22. ?

I copy and pasted that roster from Team Canada's website so not sure.....

In past years, the U22 hasn't necessarily been a hard and fast rule for Team Canada, and it doesn't seem to apply at all to their competition. One of those events where the emphasis is more on getting seasoning for those that need it.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Lacasse is 5/5/89 on the Providence website

You said it Skate. That was one of the more disappointing performances EVER by a Bulldog squad. Like dhmn said, someone has to start showing some leadership on the ice. It's hard to find any positive thing that happened in that game . . . I guess the seeming scoring at will when they needed to, but it was too little and way, way, WAY too late. There's not a good vibe about the team right now . . . and I won't put the blame on Haley, but that last penalty she took was an undisciplined play she simply can't make in that situation.

Coach Miller - how 'bout you spend 3 full practices on teaching the gals to get the puck out of the neutral zone, to break the pressure of the opposition? Seriously, what was that?? UMD has too much talent for a performance like that to take place.

All kudos to Bemidji for showing up and taking it to the 'Dogs.

I think your final sentence speaks volumes. Last month, BSU had fans of the Goph's muttering to themselves as well. Bemidji has evolved into a very fast team that hustles all over the place, and if an opponent's effort level drops at all, the Beavers take over the game. Over the next three weeks, Bemidji hosts UND, has a bye, and hosts UW. History suggests that we shouldn't expect the hosts to go winless over that stretch.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Coach Miller agrees with your assessments. From the UMD website: "Bemidji won the foot races, they won the battles and that's how they won the game," said head coach Shannon Miller after the contest. "We lacked discipline with our systems, following the game plan and that clearly assisted with the loss."

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

What can us Buckeye fans expect from UMD this weekend? Is anyone making the trip down? I know that might be difficult over a holiday weekend. My opinion is I will be happy if we get a split, based on your talent and history against us. I know you are in 6th place and we are in 4th with 17 points, but as I admitted on another thread, our points have come from sweeps of St. Cloud and Minnesota State, along with a 5-point home series vs Bemidji (shootout win on Friday, win on Saturday). I will also say, though, that we're not the same team that you have seen in the past. Our new coach has the girls skating faster, challenging every puck, and our passing is much crisper than in the past. I have been very pleased with the job Coach Nate Handrahan and his staff have done with our team this season, and we do have some talented players on the roster. Should be an interesting series.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

By the way.. having your team captains take penalties in a close game, and the team give up goals because of those penalties doesn't work either.. sort of goes back to my asking somebody to step up and take charge

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

No offense to OSU, but I hope they take the trip p.o'd from the Sunday result and win both games decisively.. by 5+ goals

Agree with it all, ARM. BSU looks the best they've ever been. And that dang goalie.... she fills the net.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Two obvious and getting back to basics things are going to have to happen if UMD doesn't want to be duking it out with SCSU for the bottom feeder position in the WCHA and those two things are glaringly obvious when viewed against other WCHA teams that occupy higher rungs on the USCHO standings page.

http://www.uscho.com/standings/division-i-women/2011-2012/

Firstly, the goals against has to be slashed...Harss' almost 3 GAA is not and will not cut it. This would seem to be the most problematic hole to plug since it appears that it will never dawn on Miller that she has options at that position no matter how poorly Harss performs. The same thing happened two years ago at the beginning of the season.

Secondly, the offensive output has to increase dramatically. Their GF is actually one fewer than their GA which never translates into top contender status.

Cornoyer in her freshman year had a great shot and some head turning moves but looked like she needed confidence to employ them more often. That may be occuring now.

With only four players in the top 50 scorers in the country, three of which are in the bottom half of that top 50, some of the freshmen need to start making it to the scoreboard with some consistency.

Talented team, but UW and UM have had their trannies slammed into gear since early October while UMD is still fooling around with the clutch while sitting in the driveway.

Miller needs to make some decisions.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Forgot to mention another obvious area requiring attention and discipline...slash to the bone the time spent in the penalty box.

Their having succeeded so far this season at slaying this dragon that dogged them for the last few years has been an important component in UM's present excellent record. A good example to follow...if one was needed.

As well, shoot with conviction and authority...always important, but specifically for this weekend...Steffes is a talented goaltender with a very fast glove hand.

OUCH!!!! What is going on with the Bulldogs? This is not just poor goal tending, I remember they tried blaming the Swiss goalie a few years back...then she lead them to the National Championship only to be replaced in the Championship game.

I watched Irwin, she does have some issues, but a coach has to make some decisions...tough ones at times like this.

It is getting close to NO recovery possible. Is Miller getting out coached? Or is Karma coming back to get her?

I remember some side comments about the men a few years ago...well they Won a National Championship too now.

Some body needs to put up or shut up, some harsh words but its from one leader to another.
