UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Looks like the 'Dogs suffered a power outage in North Dakota this afternoon.. only 20 shots on goal in the 2-0 loss... still have a shot at a home ice playoff series when the first round comes, but it'll definitely be against a tougher team if they can pull that off.. 3rd place is starting to get farther and farther away

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I think it's great that Jamie Kenyon's back in the 'Dogs lineup!!! She adds spark and speed . . . can only be good for UMD!

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

...AND she buried one on her second game back. I'll take it.

Since she's been injured, she had to avoid contact and has just been working on skating until she was given the green light. It paid off!

Seriously though, there is some kind of switch with this team. The Sat team was not the same as the Sunday team. Where is the "on" button and how can we hold it down for the rest of the season. Anyone have any duct tape?

It becomes even more apparent when you're playing a team like UND that has really struggled if they fall behind. UMD scores a soft goal right away, and it is playing to the Bulldogs' strengths and UND's weakness.

Did they not finish fourth a few years ago and then won NCAA's ?

No. Teams that have won the NCAAs in the past have always finished first or second.

Last year the Bulldogs' MENS TEAM finished forth in the WCHA and went on to be crowned NCAA Champions. Shows that the WCHA is a pretty tough conference for the men also!

Which year was it when UMD had a slow start and went on to either win the WCHA playoffs or the NCAA's ?. IIRC it was the year with the Gravilova controversy.

No, it was 2010. They were up and down in the first half of the season, Jocelyne Larocque rejoined the team for the second semester, and they only lost once after the new year. Minnesota slumped after Räty went to the Olympics, Wisconsin wasn't much good because Johnson, Duggan, and Knight were all gone, and St. Cloud was the league's 3rd place team. But the Bulldogs finished tied with the Gophers on top of the conference, so they were quite a bit ahead of the 4th-place Badgers in 2010.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Yawn.

Jasper got leveled in front of the bench with 2 seconds left in the game. She thought the officials were being irresponsible. She told them as such after the game, with a few expletives I imagine. Big deal. I've heard Idalski drop the F-bomb at the refs in a quiet arena post game. And then there's the "yellers" from out east. She said she accepted it, like a player accepts a penalty, and moved on.

Next topic.

Yawn. Next topic.

Basically, I agree. It's just nice to hear Coach say, in her own words, her perspective.

More importantly - let's hope for the Dogs to continute to play their game and walk into the break with 2 more wins. Then, get some rest and be mentally ready to take on the Gophers for the beginning of a make-or-break series of games for them (ranking wise).

GO DOGS!!!!

In a professional setting within a chosen career environment conducting oneself in a civil, professional, respectful manner is admirable and generally commonplace. Probably won't result in canonization though.

We are talking about coaches here and not supreme court judges. Looking at the most successful coach in any sport usually shows they have had many a spirited (not the Christmas kind ) discourse with officials in their careers .

And what nobody's choosing to talk about (since it was Shannon Miller and not another coach) are the issues she brought up. Is player safety important to anyone? Or is it only important if someone other than Miller brings it up? I appreciate her passion for the game and her players just as anyone who supports any other program would if it had been their coach involved.

That being said, go Dogs this afternoon. A sweep going into the Christmas break would be nice! :D

I'm aware of the specific profession and individual we're speaking of. Your analogy of a supreme court judge as relative to a division I head coach and their typical behaviors within their respective work environments is creative. No one expects any similarity in how the coach and judge conduct themselves professionally, but most still expect civility and a level of respectfulness from anyone representing a college varsity athletic program. Of course coaches get worked up, upset and question officials "passionately." There's a line...you cross it and it may cost you. No idea what Miller may have said to the official, but if in her passion she let fly with a few silver tongued profanities...

The use of profanity has been unacceptable in every professional / work environment I've ever been a part of. In the case of officials, I'm sure some are more tolerant than others, but none of them have to put up with it or allow themselves to be subjected to profanity. The WCHA obviously concluded something within the confrontation between the official and coach Miller was inappropriate per the WCHA code of conduct, thus issued a very brief suspension. That's that.

And what nobody's choosing to talk about (since it was Shannon Miller and not another coach) are the issues she brought up. Is player safety important to anyone? Actually, I did post on that very topic:

Does coach Miller engage in those "passionate" conversations with her players when they commit infractions of an identical nature? As a concern for the safety of all players that is?

I once watched Shannon Miller laugh hysterically as Jenny Potter repeatedly punched Natalie Darwitz with Natalie's head hitting the ice, also repeatedly, while Darwitz was on her back in the UMD crease.
I didn't see coach Miller have a passionate discussion with Jenny Potter following this debacle...or chase down the official to eloquently convey her thoughts and concerns for the safety of ALL players.
