UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I noticed (because I tried) they disabled picture posting.. or the one I tried to post might have been too large, oops!

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

dhmn - been meaning to thank you for posting your photos - so, Thank You! Also agree that Irwin played a great game tonight - she deserved Player of the Game. I guess the sacrifice paid off. Today is another day and looking forward to seeing what happens.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Hey Skate...happy today? DA is pi**ed. :)

I'm happy that I saw the team play the best game they've had this year. I'm happy that they played 60 minutes of great hockey with heart, tenacity, and determination. I'm happy that the hard work and discipline paid off last night.

As far as that other bloke, well, he's irrelevant to me. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying the moment just a little bit more.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I wish Shannon would wear the sequins, again, tonight. It's gotta be good luck. Though upon further inspections, I think it's more of a reflective animal print.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Gott'a say if it will keep the 'dogs playing like they did last night I hope Coach never takes that jacket off. Frankly, I think it is great we have a coach with both a personality and a sense of humor.

Pretty lifeless, disinterested, flat and confused second period for the 'Dogs...I think that about covers it. The inconsistency continues. Harss should have had that first goal by Erickson...shot leaning forward and gliding backwards...can't get much leverage that way...took what she had...good for her...but like I said, Harss should have had it.

Harss is zero for three on the breakaways so far this weekend and both goaltenders got help from their respective stalwart posts otherwise it would be 4-1. Hopefully the team will make the third period more entertaining than the second. So far the most entertaining thing was Hansen's stealing Villila's last "l" and pawning it off on Schleper.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I'd rather listen to an audio feed 30 seconds behind the video than listen to Tom Hansen live. He's a nice guy, but he's got to be one of the worst play-by-play guys in the business. At least learn to pronounce the players' names already. The Gophers have a good play-by-play guy. Even with the delay, I listened to that feed yesterday.

The Bulldogs through two periods looked like they were skating underwater, holding the puck too long, slow motion passes...and only 11 shots on goal after two? That's not going to win a lot of games. But they either want these games or they don't. The coaches can't play the game for them and neither can the fans.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Well, the Gophers were ON last night. What can you say? The better team won this contest. Miller's post game comment sums it up well in that the second period cost them the game. Was happy to see them dig in the third but it wasn't enough. They were all over McP and Irwin and we needed others to step up, score, and go for the second chances. It was great hockey though. Really put on a great show for the fans. Happy with a split, not content, but happy for the win to prove to the girls that they can play better hockey.

I'm really baffled about Wilson. For a time, I felt like she was getting her mojo back. She's certainly been hustling and getting to the right spot on the ice but why isn't she scoring?

I agree skate . . . . the Gophers looked considerably better Saturday night than Friday and sort of vice-versa for UMD. Hopefully the 'Dogs learned they have to play hard for 60 min every game . . . especially to stay in games against the best competition.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Someone told me it looked like the 'Dogs shut down after going down 1-0 on Saturday.. something that McParland didn't let happen on Friday when she answered quick

I think that's not giving the Gophers enough credit... something challenging for me to do. The Gophs changed it up quite a bit compared to Friday night where I saw them pulling the same plays every shift and the 'Dogs just worked them. Were the 'Dogs gassed? Not sure. Did they not "want it enough"? I really can't say, I wansn't in the locker room... but these are Division I athletes that have competition in their blood. To say they didn't want it is a little insulting. Did they work hard enough? I think that's the better question. The energy in the arena went down after 2-0 I think. So that's mental toughness...right? Instead of throwing your hands up, go harder. Work harder. It felt slow in the second period for sure. They were for sure hustling in period three but we couldn't solve Raty or get to our second chances.

I don't question the effort of the second game the way I have in past games.

Anyone (all 4 of us on the UMD thread) heading down to Madison for the show? Thinking about it myself. Always a great atmosphere at the Kohl Center.

Anyone (all 4 of us on the UMD thread)

Is it just my imagination or does this thread more closely resemble a ghost town this season? The Duluth residents have been quite inactive and less (vocally) enthusiastic than usual. Is this phenomenon caused by dissappointing team results?

I've been wondering the same thing, BB. But honestly, there have been times when I've been absent because it's pointless at times. Granted, there are posters and threads that are more valuable than not. I sure wish we could get more fan on here. I also hope that soon other teams like OSU/ BSU/ MSU/ etc have more fans that jump on here.

And there's the other reality of life and job getting in the way too. It's clear to me that some on this forum don't actually have jobs!

Hopefully the 'Dogs learned they have to play hard for 60 min every game...

Normally a fair and philosophically accurate comment after a disappointing performance but how many times do they have to learn the same lesson? Or have they learned it at all this season? When they play up to their capabilities they can play with anyone in the country. However, to know and not to do is not yet to know.

I posted about this last month stating that she'd been dogging it (no pun intended) and that she had the ability, can add an extra dimension to this team and needed to get serious about contributing (effort) but seemed to have lost the desire, the passion...then she had a great game next time out. Not surprisingly, her effort had increased dramatically for that game.

But if you watch her carefully (assuming illness or injuries are not the cause) you will find that she often glides in an attempt to beat an opponent to the puck (and usually loses) instead of racing to get there first. I'm wondering if being moved down the line ladder has demotivated her since her freshman year? If so, she's viewing it backwards...should be a motivator. Whatever the reasons, the passion/drive /desire seems to exist only in spurts, at least that's the way it appears to me. Too bad, because as I've said, she has the ability but ability is meaningless in any endeavour in life sans constant application.

(I wish I was smart enough to figure out how to create a post with more than one quote...it would sure come in handy sometimes...like being able to combine this post with the last one. I've mentioned this before but no one has seen fit to assist and I haven't found any instructions on this website. I've experimented but nothing I've tried works. So I guess all I can do is sit here on the end of the plank with my jug of rum and wait and wait and wait...)

Right next to the button for "Reply with Quote" is another button that has a double quote symbol and a plus sign. If you click that for a post that you want to quote, a check mark appears. Then when you hit reply or reply to thread, it will also quote any "multi-quote" selections.

Disclaimer: Ever since the upgrade to the new version of vBulletin, I've found somewhat flakey behavior regarding this function. Sometimes it doesn't work quite right when trying to combine quotes from multiple threads. At other times, it doesn't clear out my multi-quote selections after I post them, so they show up on subsequent posts as well unless I go back and manually clear them.

This forum has never been a real hotbed of activity for Bulldogs fans. Throw in the resident a**hole and you can't get a real conversation going. But there are lots of ways to talk hockey with other fans away from this place. I come here for entertainment more or less (usually less.) Having more OSU/BSU/MSU fans might be cool.

As far as going to Madison, that's a long drive from NC. I might be back in Duluth for the Frozen Four, though. :D Haven't decided yet. Watching games online doesn't cut it.

Players having to play 60 minutes? It's a little late in the season to be learning lessons. Every game from here out is a must-win for the Bulldogs. I like the top line, but the rest of them confuse me. The results certainly don't reflect how much real talent there is on this team. Watching them play Friday at Amsoil was like a walk down Memory Lane. THAT was Bulldog hockey. There isn't another team that does it any better than that week in and week out. I just wish the Bulldogs could.

Over the past couple of years I've simply found it too disheartening to come on here . . . looking for interesting talk about the team - finding it and then the avalanche of negative crap from some other people. It just gets sickening and ultimately hard to ignore.

About playing 60 minutes . . . they certainly should have learned that lesson . . . but they don't always play that way. However, I'm extremely optimistic for the team . . . . I still believe their upside is HUGE - as they showed on Friday . . . and Saturday you just had the feeling that if they could've slipped one by Raty they would've been right back in the game.

There were two "disturbing" things for me in the Gopher series - First Jenny's reluctance to challenge the puck on break-aways. It seemed to me she had two perfect opportunities but didn't take them. (I guess I'd just like her to play more aggressively in those situations). She's a great chaos goalie - those mad scrum-like times in front of her - but she's not a great one-on-one goalie.

Second, Lacquette didn't shoot!! She's got probably the best blue-line cannon UMD's had since Oulette but we never saw it. Rookie jitters or what? She has so much potential to be great . . .
