UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

We're certainly underdogs coming into today. But that is not for a lack of talent on this team. I think we can pull it off. It will be a battle royale to the finish. It will be good hockey. This seems to be a team that plays to the style of the team and it has killed them this season. But it could be beneficial this afternoon.

Best of luck to all teams. This weekend some of the best women's hockey players in the world will be under one roof. What a privilege!

Hopefully, the roofs stays up. Probably a safe bet if it is constructed better than our <s>beloved</s> Metrodome. Are we going to have to deal with much additional snow this weekend?

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

It does promise to be a great weekend for women's hockey, no question about it. I wish I was more optimistic about the Bulldogs' chances today, but I'm not. I don't see Wisconsin letting down even though a trip to the national tournament is already in the bag for them. I see UMD's season ending today and that sucks, but I can't say it's a huge surprise. They've earned the position they find themselves in as far as the standings and the Pairwise and that's not going to be good enough to get into the national tournament. I'd be more worked up about it if they just missed it by a hair, but they're not even close. It's just been one of those seasons. We've seen them before and we'll see them again.

I do hope Amsoil is packed for the league tournament and the Frozen Four regardless of who's playing. Can't wait to watch!

Not expecting anything to worry about ARM!

Do expect the 'Dogs to put up the fight of the century . . . they won't go down easily . . . I'm not predicting but wouldn't be surprised to be going back to Amsoil tomorrow to cheer on my team!

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

UMD up 2-1 after 2 periods, since nobody has updated that in here.. 1-0 after 1.. 25-18 shots on goal UMD advantage.. last 7 or 8 shots of the period.. Irwin/Cournoyer/McParland with so many scoring chances.. McParland in alone lifted the puck 20 feet over the net, made up for a it with a goal a few minutes later but could have been 3-1 now

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

These two teams always put on a great show. What an interesting game. Two or three questionable calls by the refs.

But the 'Dogs have to stay out of the penalty box. Irwin could have ended her career in the box!!!!

They have to play with a sense of urgency for the entire game if they expect to win each next game. That said, it was one hell of an effort!

Congratulations!

As I just stated in another thread, the horseshoe warehouse is now officially empty! However, I look forward to watching UW in the coming weeks...a tremendous team.

That was the most complete game the Bulldogs have played this season. They always play the Badgers tough and everything seemed to work tonight. I sure hope it's the kick in the pants they need going into tomorrow and then hopefully on to the NCAAs (where we'd get to do this all over again.) But taking nine penalties is not going to help the cause any. Geez. Harss was spectacular in goal. Rigsby had a great game, too. Can't take anything away from her.

I don't care who they play tomorrow and they probably don't either. The rodents haven't won a league or national title in seven years and the Formerly Known As The Sioux are new to this, so either one will do.

In a kind of icky note, seeing the words "Referees: Lick, Lick" on the scoresheet makes me nauseous.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I agree in all counts with Joe... as I was watching the 2nd period I actually backed out of the video to see who was reffing the game... One Lick is plenty so to win with two is no small feat!
Congrats Dogs nice win. Good time to be playing your best hockey. Wisconsin is gonna have a hard time in the NCAAs if they don't tighten up their D zone and figure out what's up with their PP. Dogs had more intensity and deserved the win.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I sure hope tom hansen or the tv crew that was there sent a video of rigsby's diving save in to espn, thats a sportscenter top 10 worthy play

The arena IS downtown.. if you're anywhere near Superior street just take the skywalk across I-35 to the arena
Ummm, thanks, I guess I should have been more specific. I wondered if there is a NEW skywalk route or if you just go around through the old arena. It's OK, I am here now and will find out for myself shortly.

But, THANKS.

Hoping for good hockey.

Apologies.. I was running late to get out of the house in the snow and get to Duluth or I would have asked where you were coming from first

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Great effort by the 'Dogs...two good efforts in as many nights.

However, not wanting to rain on their parade I will say something that I have said many times this season...so, it's not new, but something I noticed again tonight. They really need to practice shooting with authority. Can Miller really not be noticing this?

A lot of players on this team need to have more confidence in their shooting ability and that can only come with consistent attention given to that aspect of their game in practices. In other words they need to learn how to rip the puck...to shoot like a man. To do so you have to spend time practicing it.

You're not going to score too often on Raty with embarrassingly weak wrist shots from 20-25 feet out. And if what you're doing is just lobbing it at the net and hoping for the best, your chances will be improved if it's not something that she can easily glove to kill the play...which happened often tonight.

Passing plays in close that would have gotten Raty moving side to side to open up one side of the net were too few and far between. Credit UM for seeing to some of that. But way too often a lone 'Dog was skating in with the puck with no support. It looked like one of their many weak offensive efforts from the regular season. The third period looked better.

As well as they played generally, it struck me that they did not play with the same consistent sense of urgency as they did last night.

This team has just shown what it can do in the last two nights against two of the best teams in the country. It's too bad they've put themselves in such an undesireable position at this point by not getting with the program earlier in the season. But I guess that's why they play the games.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I already believe quite firmly a big rebound will be the order in 2012-2013.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I have been looking at the RPI and there is just NO way I can see it. They needed to win to get in. With that said, they had too many loses to weak teams and played well against the Power Houses.

I hope the team sticks around to Support the Frozen 4. It sucks they will not be there, but the tournament needs the support period. I wish I could be there, but I have other duties that my boss will not let me out of. I will be watching from afar as I have done all season.

About next season, not sure how that will pan out either. Miller was expecting some players this year that did not make it and there is always a chance players will not make it. Plus, we are losing some serious Fire Power on top of a Brick Wall at times in net. MN, ND and WI do not seem to be losing as much. Should be interesting next year. Hope to be around more too.

I hope as many of you attend the Frozen 4 as can, please cheer loud for me!!
