UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I thought UMD played very well this weekend. It was kind of what I expected from the 'Dogs through much of the second half, and maybe they actually were improved, but the strength of the league disguised that in may weeks. Anyway, IMO UMD has nothing to apologize for at the WCHA Finals.

MN, ND and WI do not seem to be losing as much.
I disagree with that. Wisconsin loses Knight, Bro. Ammerman, Prévost, and Haverstock; the first three plus Decker were the source of most of their offense. Minnesota loses a lot as well: Erickson, Schoullis, and West up front, Schleper and Seeler on the blue line. Both have new talent coming in, but as UMD fans saw this year, new stars require some patience.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

The outcome wasn't a huge surprise. Disappointing, of course, but pretty much on par with the way the regular season went. Inconsistent and incomplete. Special teams and goaltending were the difference. I thought Jenny Harss did extremely well in net, as did Raty, but it shouldn't be up to one player to win or lose a game. So they end their season exactly where they should be in the standings and in the Pairwise and that's not going to be enough to keep playing.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Well. We're out. So it begs the question, WHO do we cheer for?

A WCHA team because we're the best league in the country?

An eastern team because we should share the love?

Cornell? Who can't like Cornell?

Cheering for Goldy would be ***g hard, but if I've learned anything, is that this game-- women's hockey-- is about the players. There are so many great young women with talent and they are equally great people off the ice. And then to see some of them mingling post game... can I get past the occasional disturbed fan for the rodents down the road? It's entirely possible.

I would at least like to see SLU make it through to the shindig...such a small school...I think it would add great flavour.

Also think it would be interesting if UND makes it past UM although that would be a shame with the depth and year that UM has and has had. I just don't think UND's goaltending is strong enough if UM is on their game.

The smart money is on UW in their game (that would be the upset of the tournament if they lost) and as for the other game...undecided...no, Cornell...after their showing in 2010.

It's been awhile, but SLU has had a lot of tournament success, reaching five Frozen Fours, as many as Bucky. They just haven't fared as well once there.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I guess it will be the Gophers for me, as I am one. Besides, Bucky is on UMD's heels for total wins so I think another WCHA team should receive the hardware this year. Doubt if I will ever pull for an eastern team over a WCHA team.

You are correct about what quality young women all the teams seem to attract. I wish them all well.

Agreed on SLU. It would make for a great story, really.

Yeah, it would be interesting if UND made it past UM but I can't see it happening. While certainly a force to be reckoned with, they laid a giant egg last weekend. I mean, they didn't even show up. I was shocked, really. Still trying to figure out how they didn't even put up a fight. It makes me wonder if their fast and furious nature was driven by the coaching staff and they are just plain wiped when it counts the most. And you're right, it would be a shame considering the raw talent and drive that Minny has right now. I have been wrong before.

I don't know if I feel UW is a safe bet. There's certainly some amazing talent on that team... but something doesn't seem the same as last year. The gel, the flow, the energy. I'll call it the Duggan factor. How you lead after a person like that is a large set of skates to fill.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I actually thought that North Dakota didn't play that badly. They just got run over by a train. I know that they said after the game that they were too scared of making a mistake to play aggressively, but I think that was an attitude that was created by the game the Gophers played rather than the Fighting Whioux? just not showing up. Minnesota won the game in the first six minutes, during which everything North Dakota tried, aggressive or passive, blew up in their face. They certainly played a hell of a lot harder than Wisconsin did in the first game.

Of course they didn't play as well as UMD, who really surprised me. I can't remember the last time they played one game that disciplined, let alone two back-to-back. They still took too many penalties (and I can't agree with their complaints about the officiating after beating Wisconsin), but they never started running around helter skelter like they usually do. The Bulldogs played a really tight trap for much of both games that wrecked Wisconsin and gave the Gophers fits for stretches of the final.

And if Jenna McParland can stop taking her share of the dumb penalties, she's going to be really, really scary.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

I'll second that on McP. Good lord. The talent is pouring out of her but she needs to screw her brain on.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Okay.

Can I cheer for Goldy WHILE WEARING UMD apparel? I mean same colors and all....

Cross that bridge when you come to it. UND could resolve the dilemma for you. :(

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

So, I'm way behind here . . . got to give it to UMD for showing up for the WCHA tournament! Loved the way they played both games . . . keep thinking how maybe two or three more goals spread across a couple of games could have changed the outcome of their season. I doubt very much that I will be in the area to watch UMD develop into another championship caliber team next season. It just doubles the heartache for this season for me.

I'll be at Amsoil to watch but honestly, won't be cheering for anyone. My team's out.

Having experienced that at every stage -- pre-tourney, quarter, semi -- I can totally relate.

Re: UMD - Bulldogs -'11-'12 Season Thread

Anyone heading to the Frozen Four? I'm debating if I want to sit in the realization the "my team" is not there.

It's still three great games of hockey and being there in person sure beats watching it online. Throw in all the crappy arena food and you can't beat it! :D
