UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

UM 5 - UMD 0 Final. SOG UM 22 - UMD 24

Some beautiful passing plays on PP by UMD but couldn't finish...couldn't get good wood on the finish. Apparently only the second time this season that UM has been outshot...previously by UND. Unfortunately it didn't do the 'Dogs any good tonight. Have to convert on those power plays...and they had chances.

Some weak goals allowed by Black. Would be nice if the replays were shown more than once.

UM head maning the puck a lot...due to camera angle you could not see these plays developing...just someone in the clear deep for UM often.

Attendance 2536.

Overall the strategy is working flawlessly!...UM secures the WCHA championship tonight and will be deflated tomorrow with nothing to prove and then...BAM!

(Forgot to mention the #9 trainwreck near the end of the game...Davis and Wilson...south bound train on a north bound track...OUCH!...haven't seen a collision of that force for some time...looked like Wilson was going to take the brunt of it but it turned out the other way. I certainly hope that they are both alright and able to play tomorrow.)

Like how you think. Agree some soft goals and even though UMD outshot them they didn't have many quality shots. Hate to admit it but Gophers are very good and fun to watch

Gophers are definitely tough. Dogs were too soft in DZ and need to be better consistently to compete. 1st and 3rd goals aren't really your typical sniper goal but unfortunately they do count. Darn breakdowns! I guess the game would be boring if there was none!

Knocking off the Gophers on the Big Ten network is better anyway!

Year of the HABS!!

Good luck with that. Ms. Räty is still shooting for another career record -- shutouts. She actually just set another Gopher team record with her 11th this season, topping the previous single-season record of 10 she herself set last season. But she needs two more to tie and three to break the NCAA career record of 39.

All-in-all, I actually agree with the analysis of the game in this thread. UMD had several decent opportunities and just couldn't put the biscuit in the basket.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Duluth had some good chances but not as many as went the other way. Then, down two goals in the third they opened things up at which point the roof caved in on them. In all I thought the shot totals, while probably accurate, are misleading for the overall flow of play. I thought the Gophers had significantly the better of the action. My overall sense of the game was that it was somewhere between the shot totals and the final score, but closer to the latter.

I'd agree that was certainly the case in the third period but I thought that the first half of the game was fairly even. It is easy to see that the average individual talent level on UM surpasses that of UMD by a wide margin but I also thought that UMD was playing like a substantially better than tenth ranked team with respect to how close the play was, at least in the first half of the game or maybe even the first two periods.

Seemed to me that with a couple of weak goals (that's directed at UMD, not UM) once the 4th goal went in, in the third period, UMD looked understandably demoralized. If they would have capitalized when they had chances and had Black not allowed the two weak goals this would have gone from being a very entertaining game (at least in the first two periods) to an extremely exciting game...with the possibility of UM's winning streak being in jeopardy just adding another, but very heightened, dimension of interest.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

As a Gopher fan, at no point tonight did I feel the streak was in any real jeopardy. Part of it is that there were a lot of plays where a slightly different bounce could have led to an easy Gopher goal. There were at least four instances in the first two periods where a Gopher player was almost able to corral a pass that would have led to a 2-on-1 into the UMD zone. And the fact that one team had to worry about giving up soft goals and the other didn't is an important part of evaluating the game.

I certainly agree. I'd even remove the word "real" from the sentence. My point was simply that if UMD had capitalized on a few early opportunities and if those two soft goals, which were a bit unusual, hadn't occured then the score at the end of the second period would have been tied or possibly even 3-2 for UMD. If that had been the case (either score) then, in that situation, the possibility of UM's winning streak being in jeopardy starts automatically entering the viewers' minds and consequently adds another dimension of interest to an already entertaining game making it an exciting game.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

I'm not sure which two goals you are viewing as soft from a Black perspective. You may wish that she'd played the 2-on-0 differently, but the bottom line is that it is hard to hang it on the goalie when her team breaks down like that on the PP. Even if the second attacker doesn't get involved, the goaltender is still forced to account for her in the back of her mind. She had no chance on the final goal, McMillen's one-timer. The Davis goal is probably the one that her team would most want her to stop, but the chance results from a turnover behind the net and is suddenly a grade-A chance out of nowhere. The two Kessel goals were both bang-bang plays off passes from Brandt, and those have been going in all year off of a wide assortment of goaltenders. Black also denied some glorious scoring chances, so I'd say it is a bit unfair to single out a rookie and point at her as the reason that the scoreboard wasn't closer.

UMD did play very well over the first two periods. A better bounce or two, and I think that they could be right there. Given the history of this rivalry, I expect nothing less again today.

Rookie or not, she was the one in goal so she has the responsibility (all 3 UMD goalies are rookies) and I didn't point to her as THEE reason that the scoreboard wasn't closer...I pointed to her as PART of the reason and made it clear that the other part was UMD's not capitalizing on their early opportunities. (It doesn't matter how great your goaltender may play, assuming she does, you can't win if you don't score). The error that I made in my previous post (it was late!) was lumping what I thought were two soft goals into the first two periods. The first goal was not soft and since the score was 2-0 at the end of the second period that only possibly leaves the second goal as one of the goals that I thought was soft. Even so, that doesn't negate the point that I made.

In other words, and to go a step further, even if we take what I thought were the soft goals out of the equation, if UMD had capitalized on a couple of their early opportunities the score to start the third period would have been tied at two. Hence, the reason for my comment which the balance of your above quoted post would seem to agree with.

(To answer your question I thought the one from behind the net was one of the soft ones and I believe also the second goal...not sure if they were one and the same. Can't recall now the nature of the one that I thought was the second soft goal).

The second goal was the end of a PP, Bozek carried into the slot, UMD broke it up, Brandt passed from near the goal line to Kessel alone in the slot and she shot off the pass. As the game went along, Kessel seemed to find more and more open ice, and I thought that was a bigger factor than any failings of Black. Could she have stopped that play? Yes. Does one expect that goalies will stop those plays 90% of the time? No. She stopped a bunch; I just thought there were too many quality looks allowed.

Thanks for reminding me. I should have known this since I commented on said beautiful goal in my post at the end of the second period. So my comment a few posts ago about what I thought was one of the two soft goals affecting the score at the end of the second period was inaccurate. They just made matters worse, later.

1st goal went 5 hole which Kortum expected Black to slide to her left but ended up with no option but to direct puck at net. I would say Black was in control and played well and judging by Kortums celly, she didnt expect to score. 2nd was Kessel on soft back pressure fr player coming off bench. Got to play more sound DZ, not good enough by UMD player. 3rd was Davis' goal and was just a bounce and thats it. 4th goal we were in good position but back pressure on weak side wasnt good enough which allowed Kessel to get stick on puck. 5th was a deflection off of UMD player which went up in a hurry. Where contact was made with puck it threw Black off. Shot was fr behind in the stance which every goalie can read and anticipate a low shot.

Either way, UMD can compete with this power house team which only makes these games that much more exciting! UMD only has to beat them once when it counts so we can see that happening. Like a guy said once before "This team may beat us 9 out of 10 times but this is that 1 game we will win!"

HABS are winning the CUP!!

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

UMD 1 - UM 0 after one on a deflection by Winberg with lots of traffic in front.

Apparently only the third time this season that UM has been behind on the scoreboard.

Disappointed in UMD's first shot of the game...McParland in the slot with a clear shot just lobbed the puck at Raty! Don't get me started on that nonsense again.

UM can sure take away your time and space especially in your own end...extremely aggressive that way...and fast...pleasure to watch...the way the game should be played.

Listening to game -sounds like UMD doing ok 5 on 5. Twice while on PP committed a penalty that gave UM a PP leading to 2 goals. Not a good game for special teams.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

UMD 1 - UM 2 after two.

UMD taking 2 dumb penalties costs them 2 goals.

'Dogs passing is just not clicking so far today but they are sacrificing the body with abandon.

UMD PP ineffective so far.

Hickel had a breakaway on a UM giveaway just inside the UM blueline but couldn't get it up over Raty's oustretched pad.

Flow is now with UM as the period ended.

Good game.

UMD 2 - UM 6 Final.

UMD forgot to tighten the lugnuts before the start of the 3rd.

Beautiful effort by McParland in alone on Raty to even it up at 2 with a shorthanded goal. And guess what? She went top half (3 hole actually) and roofed it with authority. Been commenting about this for a while. Glad to see it.

Then disaster struck...3 UM goals within about a minute and a half.

Gillanders didn't learn from her first interference penalty and took another one.

I think Black should have had Kessel's shot (and the last one by Burns). She really needs to work on having her stick covering the 5 hole.

Two 'Dogs collide just inside their blueline coughing up the puck resulting in a short rush that ended in a goal for UM.

Similar storyline as last night except that the 'Dogs played a hell of a game today (as opposed to a really good game last night) until about half way through the 3rd. Biggest problem was their ineffective PP.

Should be proud of most of their effort. Gave UM something to think about being down for a while early and then tied in the third period.

Best comment of the telecast was from Halldorson with the graphic on the screen showing all the Frozen Four winners for the last 12 years with something like "I don't think the East is going to be happy seeing this!"

Great job 'Dogs, for the most part.

Excellent job UM...to just keep pouring it on and going for the jugular...I love it.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

I heard rumors of injuries, and the Mankato series preview confirms most of those:

Three players are listed as doubtful for the MSU series -- forwards Jamie Kenyon (9g, 6a), Zoe Hickel (10g, 11a) and Katie Wilson (4g, 8a). Wilson and Kenyon have not yet missed a game this season for the Bulldogs, but of UMD’s 19 skaters, only nine have played in all 26 games for the Bulldogs, a number that could drop to just seven after the weekend.

Players will have to step up.. I think it's a perfect time for Vafina to start scoring, and McParland to look like she did last season, when she scored 21 goals!
