UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

BU 0 - UMD O after one. SOG BU 6 - UMD 10.

'Dogs pretty much all over the Terriers for more than half the period. Just not capitalizing on several opportunities that could have been goals.

UMD doesn't look like they're 7 or 8 spots (or more) out of being ranked and BU doesn't look like a team that's ranked #7 in the country. Same was true for a good part of yesterday's game.

Black made a good save in close to keep the game scoreless.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

She also got away with a really blatant one against the Gophers last year. It's something of a trend for her.

Miller said in an interview that there was no hit from behind...they apparently came close to contacting each other but the BU player's speed combined with her attempt to stop quickly to avoid contact caused her to fall over on her own. She's got the game tapes so I guess she should know...in which case, BU got a bonus playing a further weakend UMD.

BU 0 - UMD 0 after two. SOG BU 13 - UMD 23.

Play has evened up somewhat with 'Dogs still having a decent advantage in shots on goal.

Having watched Gillanders play, I'll treat Miller's comments with a certain amount of skepticism.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

BU & UMD scoreless at the end of regulation time...going to OT!

SOG BU 17 - UMD 35...which means BU only had 4 shots on goal in the 3rd period and they all came in the last 2 minutes!

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

BU 0 - UMD 0 Final after OT!!!! Exciting OT...each team had a 2 on 1 and UMD had a 4 on 2...but didn't pass the puck. Hickel also stole the puck close to the BU net but couldn't score.

SOG BU 19 - UMD 39!!! More than 2 to 1.

Apparently UMD's first scoreless game in the program's history according to Hansen.

No lack of respect intended but is this all BU has?... one of the East's big menaces? Tony's beloved Rat Dogs? Having seen them play a few times in the last couple of years including their epic battle vs Cornell...I was extremely underwhelmed....I expected a lot more...especially against the weakest team UMD has had in years...and maybe in its program's history.

Is it just me or are most of the teams that have been contenders in the country in the last few years watered down substantially this year except for UM, UND and OSU?

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

The announcer stated BU beat the Russian National team 6-1 in a game. Reason I'm not automatically impressed because someone is on a European National Team - I'm North American biased as far as women's hockey is concerned.

Lets see if I can get myself in trouble. I'd like to see some line changes starting the 2nd half. How about: 29, 71, and 44 for 1st line - they have speed and good hands. Can score and control puck. 19, 51, 16 for 2nd - maybe being 2nd will open ice for them and they will start scoring more, also less pressure as 2nd line. 18, 92, 9 for 3rd line - 18 is looking better. 49 and 7 as 1st D - 7 has good hands and vision. 88 and 80 for 2nd D. For PP swap 92 for 71 on 1st line and move 71 to D with 49 for 1st D line. For 2nd PP leave 2nd line intact except swap 7 for 80. Leave PK alone. Any comments?

I think Clarkson and Harvard are stronger this year than they've been in a while. BC has their best offensive team, although w/o Molly Schaus, I don't know that we can yet say best overall. I was more impressed by BU than you were. UMD is never easy to play on a weekend when Miller has circled the date on the calendar and decided to pull out all of the stops. The Bulldogs are a good defensive team, although at times they look like they have no idea of how to score. Today they generated lots of chances at times, but there wasn't much for finishing touch.

Is Wong still hurting? She just didn't look like herself out there.

Good for you for speaking your mind.

I found the above combo/suggestion interesting. All three can skate...sounds logical, meaning more open ice, might work.

I've mentioned before that I feel that part of the problem is a lack of consistent intensity from enough players at the same time. Hickel (44) seems to be the most consistently noticeable playable on the ice apart from Laquette (88) who's fairly dominant on defense...although she made a blatant error today that almost cost the team a goal, which would have cost them the game. If McParland (19) and Winberg (51) would/could consistently play with the intensity and emotion/desire that they have shown that they are capable of I think it, along with Hickel's play, would be contagious and would automatically inspire and spark a few others to play with more consistent desire. It would feed on itself and the synergy would compensate for the overall lower amount of talent on the team this year.

As I mentioned last week, when they've been able to play on the same page this year...crisp passes, anticipating each other's moves, although it's been rare, they have looked quite good, I thought. As well as they played this weekend, these two ties while very encouraging, would have been two wins and it wouldn't have taken much of what I described to tip the scales against BU this weekend.

But the chemistry seems to be missing so far this year that has been almost an apparent given in previous years. Maybe it's a result of the change in coaching tactics that is the problem...maybe the coaching staff may want to rethink that part of the equation. It doesn't seem to be having the desired motivational effect.

Where has Del Basso been this weekend? I hope not more injuries.

At the risk of revisiting a bad memory for you, I was disappointed that Clarkson didn't fare better two years ago by season's end after that series with you where Raty got scored on from center ice at the boards to her right. I was impressed with them and thought they would add a great flavour to the Frozen Four.

Since I've been following the game I've always thought Harvard was overrated...great coach, but I've never been impressed with the team...(eg: being ranked in the top 5 before they ever played a game and then shortly after their season started, proving that that never should have been the case)...although my apathy has caused me to ignore them so far this year. Maybe their annual high expectations by some are a hold over from their glory days of 8-10-12 years ago with the likes of Botterill and Chu etc.

As much as I've always enjoyed watching them play for some reason (maybe it's partly because of their away jerseys that I like so much...those new, at least I think that they're new, beige jobs are horrible) I'm not overly impressed with BC this year especially sans Schaus and Stack. I always think that they are interesting, Carpenter is dangerous and Motherwell always seems to be a presence, and I'm intrigued by them but their result against an extremely weak, injury riddled and disjuncted UMD earlier this season was, very underwhelming, especially for a team ranked so highly.

Miller commented early in the season that they were going to concentrate on defence this year and I agree with you, they are a good defensive team which is all the more amazing considering the depleted talent level as compared to the last couple of years. And I also agree that they often look like they have no idea how to score. I've addressed that a few times in this thread this season with comments about the basics...like shooting as though you mean it, and I wasn't joking. At times it's been embarrassingly pathetic. The last couple of weekends have seemed to be better in that regard but there is no consistency.

And yes, lots of chances today and yesterday but just can`t close the door...strikes me as partly having to do with not enough of them being on the same mental page.

Wong hasnt looked right so far this season and regardless of Miller`s comments of a few weeks ago that the injuries are behind them there are still players that are constantly missing in action. The bench looks more like a chunk of swiss cheese. And it certainly doesn`t help now that Cournoyer`s career is over although there is no question that she made the right decision.

It`s been a strange season for them so far and also for many other teams it seems as well.

UMD 3 - SCSU 1 Final. SOG: UMD 39 - SCSU 25.

Kenyan with 2 goals including a questionable empty netter with 3.4 seconds left in the third where the 'Dogs were apparently offside. Geisen was animated.

Kenyon missed two other good chances on the doorstep...could have been a monster day for her if those two would have found the back of the net. She was the player of the game.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Forgot to mention yesterday...very nice goal by Winberg on a breakaway as is the case more often than not with her...meaning both, she usually succeeds and they usually look quite pretty (although SCSU scored 24 seconds later on a defensive breakdown around SCSU's blueline, at the end of which Black made the first save and it appeared as though she should have had the second one, but somehow didn't).

This is a glaringly strong part of Winberg's game...she scores a large majority of the time on her breakaways.

Maybe this advantage should be consciously incorporated into their game plan...have her float up high in their own zone a number of times during each game and try to quickly head man the puck to her as opposed to their normal break out but mix it up throughout the game. She has good speed and could beat many defencemen in a foot race.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

UMD 4 - SCSU 0 after one. SOG: UMD 17 - SCSU 4.

Fitzgerald chased after the 4th goal...Friend now in goal for SCSU.

UMD 6 - SCSU 1 after two. SOG: UMD 26 - SCSU 17.

Wong back at her original position as a forward andd has 2 goals so far today to show for it.

SCSU almost shotless on a 5 on 3.

Wong's second goal was on a 5 on 3.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

UMD 8 - SCSU 2 Final. SOG: UMD 41 - SCSU 21.

Everyone played for UMD. Karissa Grapp got her first ice time between the pipes with 10:08 left in the game but unfortunately didn't see a shot!

SCSU scored a J.C. Tremblay type of one bouncer from center ice on Carlstrom. Those are always dangerous...which is why he scored so many of them.

While UMD played rather well, at the same time the wheels fell off for SCSU and they looked continually worse the longer the game painfully dragged on for them. They looked totally demoralized after the 6th goal...somewhat understandably.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

UMD 3 - BSU 0 after two. SOG UMD 20 - BSU 12

Kenyon scored the second goal adding to her total from last weekend.

Winberg with a gorgeous goal from Hickel and Wilson for the third marker...gaining Wilson entry into the 100 Point Club. Congratulations to her.

The scoreboard could easily be reading quite differently as both teams have each failed to capitalize on a few good opportunities.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

UMD 3 - BSU 0 Final. SOG UMD 28 - BSU 15.

BSU only managed 3 shots on goal in the 3rd period!

At least 3 posts hit during the game...2 for UMD and 1 for BSU.

Hansen single handedly relocated the Warner Hockey School to B.C..

You gotta love him! At least he`s consistent.
