UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Yes im always impressed. I guess thats what you get when your state's university is in a hockeytown (not THE Hockeytown) cant complain
Seems like the Hockeytown girls feel right at home. Ducks fly south...Hockeytown to Grand Forks...it's like a regular migratory flyway.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

wah-wah. are we basement dwellers yet?

This team is full of surprises. You got about 5 people that work their tails off. You got a pile of really talented players. No combinations of the two. Well, that's not fair to say, is it?

Hikle is producing. Maybe she's distraction free. Macparland is so inconsistent. She could be such a impact on the scoreboard but i wonder if she cares. Wingberg too. I'm wondering about Jasper too. I mean, she came out on the ice flying in the beginning of the season. Where's the love? It's not enough! Lots of love for Kenyon and Wilson for busting tail to tie up that first game in ND last weekend but they let the fighting Lams walk right in for the OT Goal.

Black has seemed solid for a freshy. Some of those allowed goals are too soft. Is she making it too complicated? I wonder if Miller will let Carlstom have some time, or even the Michigan girl. She's reportedly solid too. I dunno though, when your team digs such a hole right out of the gate, do you mess with goalies?

Blahhhhh.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

I don't think Carlstrom saw the first goal which was a blast from the blueline through traffic. She got a piece of the second one but not enough...it trickled past her and into the net and then...Miller gives her the hook! Where has Miller's hook been when Black has looked far worse?

At least this early yawner turned into a game.

Some nice moves...Lacquette in close with a beautiful cross crease pass to (Thibault, I think), and in but ruled no goal...and McParland around a few and tried to push it 5 hole from point blank but no go. If she would play consistently with energy and drive she could spark this team.

Not having enough total talent all around, this team needs to play like a team (but don't they all?), but this one especially so, if they hope to crack the top 10 this season and possibly move up from there. When they do they look good but the synergy doesn't seem to last for long. Flashes of hope from Winberg, Hickel, McParland, Wilson...and Lacquette seems to be more comfortable at taking the odd rush to the net but more consistent enthusiastic play and synergism are required here.

Beautiful goal by Winberg...she can shoot but it strikes me that she hasn't tapped her potential in the last couple of years.

If this team can get on the same page and stay there they would surprise a lot of people...but they're starting to run out of calendar relative to the hole that they are in.

I'm not ready to count the team out yet.. other than losing Cournoyer to her back injury, this group has scored a LOT of goals, and I don't believe they've been 100% healthy as a group yet.. don't know how healthy Wong is, since she didn't get to skate this summer, as well as all of the other injuries. I've been saying it's a second half team and I believe they'll be a different team when they come back from Christmas break. The defense, and general play in their own zone has to be better, they've given Black no help in some of the games at home, but she's STILL stopped 92% of shots on her for the season. Closing out with Boston University may be a way to end the first half on a high note, if they can get at least 1 win vs the Terriers. Coach Miller's always seemed to find a way to take a game (or both) from Eastern teams (as does the WCHA for that matter come playoff time) so I wouldn't be surprised by a win next weekend.

The only thing I'd disagree with here is the "lot of goals" comment. I had just checked the USCHO stats before seeing your post and I don't think that they can be called impressive. They've scored one fewer goal than they've allowed in both league play and overall. Goals for and against usually bears an extremely direct relationship with a team's win percentage...and in UMD's case they are just below .500 with respect to goals for and against and that's also exactly where they are in the win percentage column.

Everything is relative, so I guess, "lot of goals" in relation to what? Maybe in relation to being so banged up? According to USCHO stats they've scored an average of 2.25 goals per game which places them 26th out of 36 D1 teams in the country...doesn't sound too impressive to me.

I agree that all the early injuries obviously contributed to the difficulties but even though Miller indicated a few weeks ago that everything was back to normal that way, people still seem to be regularly missing from the lineup...ie: Wong didn't play last night nor did I see Del Basso. But they were both on the ice (sparingly and late from what I noticed) in today's game.

As I implied previously, not enough of them give full effort at the same time...it's too sporadic. But when they are on the same page which I've seen a couple of times so far this season, they look quite good and if they can play consistently like that, the goals should come.

I've been thinking the same thing about the second half of the season and how they turned their sesaon around in a major way in early 2010...even going on to win the Frozen Four Championship Game...to Miller's own amazement...since she didn't think that they had it in them. I'm certainly not suggesting a Frozen Four win but a nice string of wins approaching what they accomplished in early 2010 would go a long way to placing them back in the respectability columnn.

I was talking about their career point totals vs. the under-achieving this season... knowing these players CAN score goals, I'm expecting that to come back in the second half as everyone is hopefully healthy and ready to put on a 2nd half push

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

I'd like to see Hickel grab WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. She's been really consistent and deserves recognition for her point streak.

On another note, Krause was very aggressive today and I liked what I saw until she checked the BSU girl from behind. It was right in front of me and there was no excuse. Disappointed that she let her aggression get out of control.

Also, Vafina can really skate! I'm glad to see her really playing now.

I'm just glad she's eligible now after some clearing house issues.. after playing a few games then being benched by the NCAA again it seems she's on the ice for good now.. just in time with Cournoyer's departure from the roster.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Congrats to Zoe Hickel for well deserved recognition as WCHA Player of the week. I was curious about Hickel in that I expected more from her right out of the gates this season. Maybe it's not that she wasn't producing, rather the bounces weren't going her way. She's been working hard lately. I wish I could split it between her and Kenyon. With Wong having limited ice time last weekend, I saw Kenyon really step it up leadership wise. That combined with her gritty effort in ND the previous week, I feel like Kenyon is a bit of an un-sung hero. She's humble too. Just a **** good worker. She creates opportunities and certainly has seen her share but also, feel like she could use a dose of luck. If she and Hickle can keep their lines rolling the team can build some momentum.

Great to see Vafina on the boards last week. I think she has a lot to offer and her slow start (some sort of internal eligibility issues suggested earlier?) is hopefully over now with a little bit of confidence.

The team will have to out-grit BU this weekend. I'm hoping it's great hockey like we've come to expect from playing the caliber of Minny and Wisco and that the girls empty the tanks on the ice both nights.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

BU 1 - UMD 0 after one.

UMD has outshot BU 14-8 and was 9-1 at one point!!...but couldn't convert. Could have just as easily been 2 or 3 goals.

BU scored on their 3rd shot (I think)...Poulin to Kohanchuk in close.

BU 1 - UMD 0 after two.

SOG BU 15 - UMD 21

Gillanders 5 min major and a game misconduct then UMD killed off the major in the last 6 minutes of the period.

Hansen spiced things up by adding a player to the BU roster in the second period..."Kowalchuk".

UMD blows a 2-1 lead with 2 minutes left in the game by standing around and watching. OT.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

BU 2 - UMD 2 Final after OT. SOG BU 23 - UMD 30.

Forgot to mention that during an interview Miller claimed that UMD has the toughest schedule in the country this year. Reflecting on the shape the team has been in for the first half of the season I'm not sure if that is good or bad...I'll assume, ultimately good.

UMD should have won but a couple bad plays cost them. Their PP is horrible -might be time to look at changing some of the players.

Agree that they should have won. They just stood still for a few seconds and watched instead of pressuring BU while BU moved the puck from the corner to the opposite point for the shot that resulted in what you knew was coming and was deserved by their collective let up...there was only a couple of minutes left in the game. Did the same thing vs UW in the last 25 seconds of a game at the end of the season a couple of years ago which also cost them.

But the other part is a two part combo plate...poor UMD power play, yes, but also a highly successful BU PK so far this year...ie: real bad combo for UMD.

During interviews one of the coaches said that they have been working on their PP...more work is required since on one they only registered one shot.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

How many of these is that for her?

Now that you mention it, possibly the second this season I think, but I don't know for sure.

Wasn't watching that part of the screen when it happened, only caught a peripheral view of it but the play by play commentator lead one to believe that it was incidental, albeit from behind. So the intention may not have been there although the contact was.

She also got away with a really blatant one against the Gophers last year. It's something of a trend for her.
