UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

It's a good thing nobody knows the rankings below the top ten...could UMD have slipped quietly out of the top 15 with this weekend's performance? Ouch, again!

I guess on the positive side there is only room for improvement...isn't there?

Another bad turn over in D zone and not much sustained offense. On bright side - players are coming back.

As of today, UMD is ranked #19 in KRACH (Note that KRACH does include Sacred Heart, but not Penn State nor Lindenwood), #11 in Rutter, and #18 in RPI. So whether or not you're in the top 15 depends on whom you ask.

Interesting games this weekend. At times this team looks very good. at other times - less so. Hopefully as the lines settle down they will get more in sync. I don't understand the tendency to bunch up and the inability to complete the 10 - 15 foot pass.

I noticed same. I think it was in the second period where after a few minutes of quick coordinated play and crisp passing I thought that they were now coming together as a cohesive unit...they were looking impressive and in control of the momentum. Then a few minutes later, not so much.

I saw Wilson take a great wrist shot from about 10 or 15 feet out...which she seldom does...and I could barely see the puck! That's unusual for her. Maybe she's been working on her shot which I believe is her weakness regardless of the points she has amassed in the last three years. She needs to do more of this instead of just waiting for opportunities on the doorstep...which she has a good nose for and from which she scores most of her goals...but adding to her arsenal with a great wrist shot like Sara O'Toole used to have will only benefit the team and add to their offense, especially now with the loss of Cournoyer.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Mid term reports recently. Musta kicked them in gear to show up to class. now if they would only sleep in there own beds.

That team needs some offense for the weekend coming against minnesota. right now that seems to be the line with Jasper. Hickle seemed to have a surge there, can there possibly be more? One goal for all her boyfriends? McPharland and Bridget could stand to help out but I guess it will be the way they seem to approach everything: only if they feel like it. For someone with all those moves (jenna) and that rifle of a shot (bridget), what's a fan gotta do to see it? Pay extra admission? Tell them how great and amazing they are? Fine, whatever... just bring it for god's sake. Jessica Wong has the ability to score if she would just shoot more. It would be great if the freshman starting doing there part now that it's November. I mean, WHo is this Kraus girl with all her Team Canada experience? She's skating like it's mud, not ice. Now that Windberg is wearing the "A", will she be motivated for more? Her work ethic could stand to rub off on a few. what happened to kenyon? She seemed like she was going to be a scorer early on? Black will have to be H-O-T this weekend with the offense that is coming to town.

Will the rivalry be enough to make them show up for 60 minutes of hockey? Twice? i dunno. hope its not boring.

The team still hasn't been at full strength this season.. Wong recovering from the offseason surgery.. Thibault finally playing, but at what level coming off injury.. then Cournoyer is hurt and missed the last 2 weekends.. Villila finally played last weekend at BC after being in a boot for much of the early season.. Vafina finally eligible and playing. SO many freshmen in the mix and so many different lineups being juggled while working to figure it all out. Definitely going to be the kind of year where you forget the first half come January, long as everyone's healthy, and look at how this extremely young team improves through the second half.

UMD's weekend outlook at Cournoyer and Winberg listed as day to day for the Minnesota series

"The Bulldogs may be missing a few players, but as the rafters at AMSOIL reminds us, nothing fuels success more than the heart; something this Bulldog squad is beginning to find in abundance."

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Well, it was a good first half of the game (just short of) and then the wheels came off, sort of. Seemed to me that UM's offence has been too stong to be denied tonight and the 'Dogs offence sort of the opposite which isn't aided by the injuries and constant juggling of lines with the unstable lineup. Without that handicap it might have been a closer second half which is not to take anything away from UM...they're a powerhouse.

That having been said, I have to say that I was underwhelmed with them tonight...less than I expected even though they won. Or was it a case of their underperfoming a bit (although I'm having some trouble with that concept) and UMD's overachieving in the first half of the game. The first half was pretty even for the two arch rivals but the second half not so much.

The 'Dogs played better at even strength than on the powerplay. I thought maybe they should wisely decline any further offers of going on the power play extended to them by the officials. Strikes me that the forwards have to start making decisions a lot faster and with authority...they're often way too slow and tentative or even meek in their execution. I realize that this is possibly partly a function of not practicing and/or playing with the same line mates regularly but neither did I see any major individual effort by anyone. Time to start skating like you'd rather not be anywhere else. And this is the third time that Black has been scored on in bunches within 2 or 3 minutes so far this young season.

The good news, at least I hope it's good news, is that Cournoyer was back on the ice. Change of heart?

All in all, it seems like improvement for the "Dogs...to be able to hold the number one team in the country scoreless for half a game. As the Wednesday's Women column stated, the 'Dogs are a mercurial team. A couple of undisciplined penalties fewer and this might have been a more intense if not different game in the second half.

I guess tomorrow's game will allow us to determine whether or not tonight's game was an aberration...meaning will the spread in tomorrow's game, play and scorewise, be a lot greater?

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Cournoyer was originally a scratch for tonight, but she skated in warmups and playing sparingly throughout the game.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

I thought they played well for most of the game. Hickel, Jasper, and Kenyon all had good chances. However, they have some players who seem to panic when they get the puck - bad passes leading to turnovers or icing, poor decision making. I think they will turn it around when they start getting a majority of players at practice and get some stability in the lines.

My big complaint from the game was the broadcast - I missed the first goal because they were showing a pizza add. They drive me nuts.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Miller ought to start having someone teach several of her players how to shoot the puck. This pushing/dribbling the puck toward a D1 goalie, like a 4 year old would do, as though you haven't eaten for two weeks is mortifying. Is this all they can muster? Most goalies can shoot better than that.

Raty must have been thinking that she would have been better off installing her cardboard cutout in net tonight and actually doing something productive, like studying.

Only one real shot on her and it was a cannon off Lacquette's stick from the high slot with 5 minutes left in the game that almost decapitated her. Lacquette shoots like a man and ought to be teaching some of her team mates the fine art of the slap shot...I can't imagine there being anyone in the country who does it better...make that North America. And maybe Miller ought to place a call to Sara O'Toole after freeing up some cash to entice O'Toole into putting on a few wrist shot clinics for several of the 'Dogs.

This part of their game for several players is a complete embarrassment. What's Miller and her coaching staff watching when these things are taking place? Or maybe there's a new recruitment requirement...a terminally low platelet count.

And again, to be clear, I am speaking specifically about shooting. Obviously not everyone but several of them...enough to make a big difference if they would learn how to shoot and/or to consistently apply said skill when they do attempt to take a shot. Shoot the **** puck like you mean it.

Megan Bozek?

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Difference is bozek was set play on PP- shoots not bad- Lacquette's time and space was taken away- I would say Lacquette over Bozek easily- Mcp not far behind...
Myself I think there are several that compare just fine...and equally at least with Lacquette from a strength / heaviness of shot standpoint. I can say without reservation or hesitation I wouldn't trade Gopher #19 for any other D in college hockey.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Bozek has an unbelievable shot and I just can't figure out why UMD was giving her space last night. Perhaps they were too occupied covering Kessel?

The focus was to collapse by the way the ok was set up- only prob is if the D don't block the shot, then they're just a screen- first goal was screened by the captain- at this level, if a goalie can see a point shot, she will stop it- unless it's Laquette shooting- I still think raty's still wondering where the puck went! Regardless, Gophers have a good squad
