Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!
Well, it was a good first half of the game (just short of) and then the wheels came off, sort of. Seemed to me that UM's offence has been too stong to be denied tonight and the 'Dogs offence sort of the opposite which isn't aided by the injuries and constant juggling of lines with the unstable lineup. Without that handicap it might have been a closer second half which is not to take anything away from UM...they're a powerhouse.
That having been said, I have to say that I was underwhelmed with them tonight...less than I expected even though they won. Or was it a case of their underperfoming a bit (although I'm having some trouble with that concept) and UMD's overachieving in the first half of the game. The first half was pretty even for the two arch rivals but the second half not so much.
The 'Dogs played better at even strength than on the powerplay. I thought maybe they should wisely decline any further offers of going on the power play extended to them by the officials. Strikes me that the forwards have to start making decisions a lot faster and with authority...they're often way too slow and tentative or even meek in their execution. I realize that this is possibly partly a function of not practicing and/or playing with the same line mates regularly but neither did I see any major individual effort by anyone. Time to start skating like you'd rather not be anywhere else. And this is the third time that Black has been scored on in bunches within 2 or 3 minutes so far this young season.
The good news, at least I hope it's good news, is that Cournoyer was back on the ice. Change of heart?
All in all, it seems like improvement for the "Dogs...to be able to hold the number one team in the country scoreless for half a game. As the Wednesday's Women column stated, the 'Dogs are a mercurial team. A couple of undisciplined penalties fewer and this might have been a more intense if not different game in the second half.
I guess tomorrow's game will allow us to determine whether or not tonight's game was an aberration...meaning will the spread in tomorrow's game, play and scorewise, be a lot greater?
