UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

I decided that it was a good day for a drive and after a crappy week I wanted to see a live game. So I'm up in Duluth to watch this afternoon.

McParland and Hickel need to pull their heads out of their ..... If Hickel can keep herself from getting benched ...
I know I'm taking that completely out of context, but Ms. Hickel managed to get a game misconduct for a check-from-behind today. Not good. Still, UMD found a way to beat the Red Menace.

I'd describe it more as the Red Menace finding a way to beat itself. UMD's first goal came when Alex Rigsby tripped on the back of the net and a Badger defenseman managed to misplay the puck right into the crease while she was down; Brianna Gillanders got there first and pushed it in. To quote someone who may or may not want his name used, UMD did their absolute best to give it back but Wisconsin refused the generosity.

All in all, it was not much of a game. Neither team looked ready for prime time. UMD has the reasonable excuse that they only dressed 15 skaters, played forwards at defense and gave regular shifts to a third line that probably ought to be a less frequently played fourth line. I can't be as generous to Wisconsin. They looked better than the last time I saw them play the Bulldogs at Amsoil but that was a really low bar to clear. They looked pretty lethargic for much of the game. There were times where they kept the puck in the zone for long stretches, but Kayla Black only had to make a few tough saves, at least in the first and the third when I was sitting about ten feet behind her.

Fortunately the drive was pretty nice because I'd have been disappointed if I'd counted on the hockey to redeem it.

I wouldn't say that was prime time Bulldog-Badger hockey as we know it, but if you consider the context of both teams this year starting with much different teams than last year... and early in the season, it's a different set of rose colored glasses. I think the Bulldogs picked up where they left off with the second game against Ohio and it was, at it's best, improving. Black was a great force, no doubt, and major kudos to her. But there are some steady improvements on the roster of 15 skaters and the team can only build from there. I can't speak for Wisconsin outside of, it's a much different team than the past two-three years, but so are a lot of teams in the league. Though I would say that MN is as strong, if not stronger than last year coming out of the chutes.

THanks for making the drive up though, to support women's hockey. It's a really great league to be a part of.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

I'm still a little unclear of the lines right now due to the fact so many are out.... but I think Stauber and Gillanders were third lining it last night but they both have shown they gained some serious speed over the summer and I don't think they are third, much less fourth liners. If anything, they were anchoring that line to develop the newer players. Stauber was keeping up with, and out skating, Jenny Potter in the series against the Whitecaps. Gillanders got the momentum going with the first goal early in the first yesterday (sloppy or not, she was in the right place at the right time and capitalized on Rigsby's folly) So, I disagree with you that our third line will be/ should be relegated to fourth once the team is healthy.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Unranked and winless UMD not only sweeps but shuts out the 4th ranked team in the country! Looks like both those "rankings" will require some adjusting tomorrow...thereby, narrowing the gap.

Was it the Amsoil ghost of the Frozen Four haunting UW? Decker seemed (understandably) quite frustrated in the last 10 minutes of the game taking two penalties thereby reducing her team's chances even more than the persistent clock alone was accomplishing.

Good for the 'Dogs even though it was less than inspiring hockey...but the third period started looking better.

Rigsby made a couple of good saves and Black was solid. Both offenses were anemic. If Wilson would learn to shoot (and maybe skate with intensity) she could be dangerous.

These are obviously not the talent laden teams we have become used to in the last several years even considering injuries and illness. But improvement would seem to be almost inevitable...no?

Even though it's early it appears we may be having to rely on UM to keep the troika intact at the end of the season (for those interested in such things) which is something that the die hard UM fans I'm sure wouldn't mind at all. But lots can change in the next 5 months. Hopefully, much for the better for the 'Dogs and Badgers to the chagrin of their opponents.

the end of a era has come... a very special fan will not be able to lead the UMD fans from the stands on a regular basis after this weekend.

Cheers to you, Binnyrus. You will be missed. :)

Hate to see any fan not be able to be at the games, we just simply need more of us! Best wishes to you, Binnyrus. I hope that where ever you're headed, there's hockey and more importantly, an internet connection to watch the 'Dogs!

I agree with Blackbeard: Wisconsin and UMD are very different teams than we are used to and yes, there is so much season to cover. I'm not entirely familiar with the UW roster outside of the usual suspects so I won't speak to that on this thread. I do, however, think there is some real talent and potential on the UMD squad and this second game was better than the first, and was better than the last game against Ohio. So win or not, I see the play getting better, the passes getting better, the overall connection of the team getting better. It feels like a good squad and when watching the behavior in between the whistles, it appears that these girls really enjoy being together on the ice. That has been missing the last couple years and call it fluff, but it's the stuff that matters.

Despite Champidiot's bashing, #44 got a couple dingers last night and I think she has the opportunity to be a play maker. McParland was showing us some moves yesterday but the Badger defense was able to get in her way at the last minute. She's got the stuff, I'd like to see a little more fire from her. I know it's in there, we've all seen it. I'm super impressed with #71. She's been playing D to cover for her injured teammates and she's doing a dang good job of converting. She has stepped up her game from her rookie season. I could go through the whole list, but I see improvements across the board from the returning players. The freshman seem to hanging in there with not too many freshman mistakes and I'm sure the coaching staff and captains will work hard to help them transition to D1/ WCHA hockey. And how about Kayla Black this weekend? Solid as a rock. I'm anxious to have the full roster back. Dana Gallop, Tea Villia, and Vanessa Thibault are all important pieces of the puzzle.

This league just got tougher as the squads traditionally on the bottom are getting better. And that's a great thing for everyone as it raises the level of play for our whole conference and increases the likelihood of world domination.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

As said by others . . . none of us mistook the latest UMD vs WI series for a national title game!!! I think Skate said it well - neither team is what it was HOWEVER, neither is yet to be what it will be this season. I was simply happy to see that UMD played with significantly more energy and focus than in the OSU series. You could see from the outset that they'd worked on "D" - not nearly the number of breakaways and odd-man rushes that they had agaisnt OSU. Give the goalie a real chance and she'll make most of the saves . . . . that said Kayla (Black) looked more comfortable and confident between the pipes and the 'Dogs are going to need that. I'm very hopeful for this team. This close (finger and thumb less than an inch apart) on many other chances. Look out WCHA when Lacquette draws that stick back . . . my GOD that girl has a rocket. I wish I could watch in person her continued development.

That said . . . thanks for the compliment skate - watching UMD women's hockey has been one of the big highlights for me the last 11 winters!! Traveling all over Minnesota and the country to cheer on my team has been so much fun (doused with occasional heartache)!! I've met so many other great hockey fans - and managed to make many new friends along the way (including my tax guy!!!). But most of all I've learned to appreciate the talent and courage of the young women that take the ice. It's pretty easy for those of us relegated to the stands to make judgement - but we don't have to go out there and risk making complete fools or heros of ourselves every time. My only advice to each and every fan is to enjoy what you have while you can - from all of the players that make so many sacrifices just to have the opportunity to step on to the ice to be able to say "I plyed D-1 hockey" to the OLYMPIANS for goodness sake . . . it only makes me smile to have the knowledge that I have taked to players like Jenny Potter, Caroline Oullette, Kim Martin, Maria Rooth, Sara Tuominen, Hanne Sikio, Riita Schaublein, Tula . . . to name only a few.

My path takes me to North Carolina for a while (hockey hot-bed that it is) but I do hope to be back in the Northland sooner rather than later. My neice has been apprenticing (is that a word?) and I think given the chance, will continue the goalie fan club. I'll be keeping tabs on everything o-line!!!!

thank god for goalies with two syllable names/ nicknames.

Might just have to make a sign that rests in your seat from now on. Maybe you'll see it on the video cast if they pan over the section.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

so you guys didn't like what i had to say and now you made my green bar red. boo hoo.

the team beat wisconsin this weekend so i'm guessing most of them will take the chance to miss class because they can get away with it. i don't get to use "i'm a winner" to miss class. someone has to go to class to learn about how to fix all their boo-boos. i used to like women's hockey better than men's hockey because they girls had more brains. now they are just like the guys, dumb as pucks.

With all due respect to Black, who has so far been average at best, (without yet being tested by a strong team), I'd like to see what Carlstrom can do in net...hopefully tomorrow. The 'Dogs folded like a cheap tent in the last few minutes of this game and then didn't overcome that mindset in OT.

There'll be no being ranked on Monday.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Toward the end I saw a bad penalty, some very bad puck handling decisions, and what looked to me as a soft goal. It was like they lost track of the game situation.

Seemed that way. The first half of the game was virtually penalty free but then UMD took two penalties late (after MSU had taken a couple in what seemed to be their snuffing out their last possible hope for a comeback), giving MSU hope and armed with the knowledge that most of their goals so far this season have come in the 3rd period, of which I'm sure Means had reminded them between the 2nd and 3rd periods, they then had a vision to cling to and a believable path to follow. The human mind is a very remarkable catalyst...in either direction.

It might also have been that UMD thought that the game was already won 3-0 and were mentally heading back into the dressing room with about 5 minutes or so left in the game.

Without meaning to be critical, just objective, prior to the last 5 minutes or so of the game I was thinking that Black has had an extremely easy time easing into D1 hockey because apart from a persistent OSU team she has faced very anemic offenses and for the most part has only had to go through the motions of routine saves that most average goaltenders can perform unconsciously...this is not a "normal" WCHA year. I was thinking ,as well, that we'll have to see what she can do when UM rolls into town or vice versa...then the last 5 minutes of the game were played. I guess we won't have to wait.

I think Carlstrom should get the start tomorrow to see how she can do. I say that because only a couple of short weeks ago Miller was saying that they hadn't decided who was going to be the starter in goal...as well, because of Black's performance tonight once she started to be tested.

I also thought that McParland, apart from a couple of plays, and Wilson were pretty much invisible tonight. Lacquette and Wong were making their presences known.

Re: UMD 2012-13 SEASON!!! The Quest for 6 begins!!!

Discipline and mental toughness.

You simply cannot take 2 penalties in your OFFENSIVE zone with 10 minutes left.

The breakouts out need to be crisper , with more speed. Seems like everyone is looking at each other at half speed wondering
where the puck is going to go. I know this takes time, but they need to be breaking out and skating through the neutral zone with possession at speed.

The team is simply not jelling offensively yet. Keep it simple- cycle the puck- and make sure you put yourself in a position to score when the time comes.

The goalie will learn about mental toughness in time. After the goals started going in it was obvious she was rattled. I bet she would like to get some of those goals back.

I would not be surprised if Miller puts Black in today. Sometimes you need to throw them right back into the fire.
