UMass Lowell: 2023-24 Season

its funny seeing former players (alaska anchorage and bentley) having success away from UML. I hated seeing Nik AK go last year, but it was understandable as he wasnt getting the playing time he thought he should be. (and there were times i thought he shouldve been over some transfers). I think Norm's love of the transfer portal has him blind to what he actually has. Granowicz reminds me of a poor mans ryan brushett (falls in love with his puck handling but wont shoot it like brushett did). I liked who he brought in as a coaching staff this year (zink and boschetto). The system has never really evolved with the game and its rearing its ugly head right now. I wouldnt like to lose the whole coaching staff but keep add a new head coach. No more grad transfers playing lets see what we have internally going forward.

I agree. Peterson has played a majority of the games and is 0-0-0. At some point you need to let the younger players develop. Maybe put Roc Truman in so he and his brother don’t leave this offseason?

Yup. The only positive that could come from this season is valuable experience and playing time for freshmen and sophomores. It should be a youth movement from here on out. I’d be livid if I was the Truman family given the state of the team and Roc still hasn’t been dressed.

This weekend reminded me of the Anchorage series last season. In both cases for whatever reason the team just didn't show up. You would think after getting embarrassed by Bentley they would have come out on fire against Army. Instead, it was more of the same. What drives me crazy is getting out worked. Before this weekend, even with all the injuries and the lack of scoring the team has played hard and has proven they can play with some of the top teams in the country.

Only 4 games left before the break (@UConn, @UVM, HC and @HC). Can the Hawks (5-8-1) put together some wins and salvage the first half?
Big game at UConn with a chance to win another (MC) season series.

After watching not sure if they can win any games hey it’s been coming last few years no snipers all muckers that’s it in a nut shell

It's almost like we saw this coming with the lack of recruiting real talent on the front line. We are currently tied for dead last in goals per game.

But hey a month plus ago, we had a guy score four goals and was second in scoring in the NCAAs! It's always a good idea to judge a team off the first two weekends. We shouldn't judge it by the fact that we saw as a scoring issue last year. We shouldn't judge it by seeing that the talent just isn't there, as much as want it to be. But we should judge it by one weekend against Colgate, which told us we would just be fine offensively. We all know the guy who hits two home runs in the first game of the season is OBVIOUSLY going to hit 324 over the course of the year. Because that's how it works, right?

and this is why I always thought it was important to try to press for some of the better kids in those up years rather than always looking for "system" players. Do you not believe you can get people to play your system that you always need to get players that fit a certain mold? I mean if the players aren't coming, I guess that's an issue, but you know I'm reminded of a certain late Maine coach who knew he could get guys to play his system and teach them how to do it along the way.

What's done is done in that respect. I still believe Norm has the ability to win. My ultimate lack of faith is that that I don't think he can get the players to campus especially if there's a reputation formed on him.

edit: sometimes I feel like my quips or misgivings on certain aspects of coaches seems to bear out long term... I remember in 2003 joking about the off possibility of Blaise stacking classes and being shut down quickly at the time... I didn't believe it but saw it as a plausible strategy (you get lumpy classes which get you national attemtion every 4 years then smooth out the classes once you get to national relevance)... now in some ways its conventional wisdom on that time period. With Norm my misgiving was not going after talent and sticking to a mode. I'm not going to proclaim my genius on either... but man... its not like I want it to come to be. I believe in this coach in making the best out of any line up in the nation.

That's been my worry for a couple of years. I don't see a single forward on the roster (and not even sure about any of the commits) that will reach 100 points in their career here. We have no one of the level of CJ or Gamby on the roster or incoming (Truman might be the closest).

and the program is losing ground in the league. The teams that have finished below the Hawks for years are now on the rise.

Cole was wearing Meehan's usual C tonight. Not sure what that means going forward as far as Meehan injury timeline but if that's anything to go by then it's looking long term

Cole has been wearing the C since Meehan went down a month ago. With Meehan and Stella out, we had no captains in the lineup, so someone had to wear it.

The season series with Merrimack was a split, with each team taking 3 points.

Look like UML has new roommates. PWHL Boston will be playing home games in Lowell. This comes right after welcoming the Pirates to the arena for indoor football next season too.

University must really be dying for money now welcoming two new teams to their arena. Shame they don't have an AHL team to charge Ludacris rent like they did before they kicked them to the curb rudely....

I hope they use some of that money to fix some of the major issues in the stadium. The sound system is awful, and as someone already noted, half the sinks in the men's room don't work.

Good riddance and screw Lou Lammerello with a...

edit: Not having the AHL has been a benefit in general. Its a direct competitor. Just is. However I do welcome indoor football and... if the bathrooms are getting into problems no wonder the rest of the program is having issues. Well, yeah, if you have serious building problems that's going to cheese people off and run them away.

Two big games this weekend. Hopefully the Hawks can get back on track. Both games will be on NESN, Friday at UConn @ 7:00 pm, Sunday at UVM @ 3:00 pm.
