It's been awhile....
I'm very concerned about the not only the team but the school as a whole. Before I get to that, that was probably the ugliest non-league game since I believe we gave one away to Niagara during a snowstorm about 15 years ago...not exactly sure of the date.
Now for the concerns....
1. Team: It's obvious after the [Dillan] Bentley goal, the Falcons raised it up about 100 levels and the River Hawks were all too ready to acquiesce. One would have thought that the Merrimack OT game last week at home would have brought them back to center. The PP goal was one thing but the quick goal not 12 or so seconds later was the icing on the cake. They were outshot 32-5 in the final two periods which leads me to believe they have waived the white flag and that they just don't buy into the system any longer. It's a dangerous place to be and what is the most shocking is we haven't seen this type of performance by any of Bazin's teams. The end result prompts more questions than answers where no one outside of the team can fathom.
2. School: The larger concern I have is the
financial status of the school. If you weren't aware, there were about 20-25 layoffs in academic staff recently as the school is $37M underwater.
Now well past its D-I probationary period, it's not a stretch to say it's very hard to compete at the elite level this team was a decade ago without adequate monetary backing. With the men's basketball team now enjoying some major success in the past two weeks, including nearly sweeping its more difficult non-conference games, hockey isn't at the forefront any longer.
Today's game is an obvious 100% must win....any other result will likely lead to a retooling season and NCAA tourney hopes, as slim as they are now on a realistic level, dashed.
