UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

Re: UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

A couple of updates:

1) Cam Spicer is now playing for the Islanders H.C. coached by Sean Tremblay.

2) NHL Central Scouting Preliminary List was released last week. Two Maine recruits, Alexis Binner-D & Benjamin Beck-G, were assigned B grades indicating a 2nd/3rd round candidate.

Go Blue!!

I must be blind because I looked through the lists(on my phone) and couldn't find any Maine recruits. I wonder if Beck could come next year? I had no idea he was that highly regarded.

Any idea what is going on with Tralmaks? I see he hasn't played any games with Chicago yet.

Here is the preliminary list https://www.nhl.com/info/nhl-central-scouting-player-rankings which was released last week. Binner also appeared on the Futures list which was released in July. https://www.nhl.com/news/2016-17-nhl-central-scouting-futures-list/c-281205056

These lists are always a little fickle. A grades are usually fairly accurate B grades less so and C grades are a crap shoot. The midterm rankings are the first real benchmark for the central scouting rankings.

I haven't heard anything about Tralmaks. He is not suspended or on IR. Perhaps he is injured but not seriously. USHL teams can be pretty quiet about injury status.

Hopefully it's nothing serious if he is injured. It looks like him and Schmidt will be Maine's two best incoming forwards for next year.

With Morris graduating this year, I guess it would make sense to bring Beck in, so to give the team three goaltenders (McGovern, Beck, Mundinger).

Go Blue!!

It's a mixed bag as one would expect, but very encouraging to see Hill, Hock, and Keeper off to great starts. The guys in the USHL need to pick it up and Schmidt needs to slow down taking so many penalties.

Re: UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

Mitchell Fossier has been named Hockey East Rookie of the Week. This ends a lengthy drought for Maine freshmen stretching all the way back to last week, when Fossier also won the award.

Re: UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

Schmidt-Svejstrup has received 10 minute misconduct penalties on two separate occasions. One for fighting BU commit Kasper Kotkansalo! Let the rivalry begin! Other than that he has only 2 minor penalties on the season. USHL, and other junior leagues, get a little out of hand at times with fighting. The aforementioned fight was accompanied by a total of 15 penalties assessed in that period. Regardless, JSS has been recruited for his scoring ability not his enforcing ability, so yeah a bit of a disappointing start to the regular season for him after he lit it up during the preseason. Adam Dawe seems to be developing a track record of penalty problems though. Last season 72 PIM in 44 games and 64 PIM in 35 games the season before. For someone of his offensive prowess I would rather see him forget about the slashing, roughing, and most recent penalty spearing!

A proxy for defensive play is +/- and it is worth nothing the Butala is at E +/- while his team has only scored 10 goals while giving up 18. Of course a lot of variables go into a players +/-. Also Binner is at E while logging substantial minutes on the teams PK. I would also like to point out that recent commit, Jeremy Swayman, is playing for a very young Sioux Falls team. The team has lots of talent likely to be drafted in the upcoming NHL draft, but this year is probably going to be an ugly statistical season for the team.

Per Jeff Cox, Maine has received a verbal commitment from late '98 Forward Ben Meyers. Ben has suited up for one game with Fargo (USHL) this season but appears to be planning on playing for his high school team (Delano HS) in Minnesota this winter.

I'm sure Maine has missed out on some guys but they have been on fire last few months. 2018 could be one of the better classes Maine has ever had. They must be planning on a number of guys leaving early over the next couple of years.

Re: UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

It was mentioned on the other thread that Swayman signed and I saw on twitter that Tralmaks did as well. He had a goal and an assist over the weekend.

Re: UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

Binner and Dawe signed their letters of intent as well.

Re: UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

Very happy to see this......Dawe was thought to be a flight risk to Junior hockey at one time. This looks like another group of impact recruits coming in next season.

Completely agree. If it is somewhat close to this year's freshmen class Maine shouldn't be too far away from the NCAA's.
