UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

Re: UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

So right now Maine has 10 guys projected to come in this summer? 4 seniors leaving so looks like some others will be leaving?

Mike & Fishman, thanks for the thanks. I appreciate it. after 15-20 years of doing this for my own pleasure I finally decided it would be worthwhile to share:)

Actually if you count Pieper (transfer junior eligibility), Herner & Doherty (redshirt) there are 13 newcomers next year. Lots of roster turnover this offseason and the following as well. Which is in line with this forum's assessment of the team which needed a couple of additional eligible players to improve depth and with graduation we are looking at a minimum of 3 starting defensive positions up for grabs and 6 starting forward positions up for grabs. At the very least Red has succeeded at creating a competitive roster environment. Now he needs to succeed in the W column.

Re: UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

I would have thought Herner would have played this year if he had something to add to the team. I think he was eligible after 19 games?

Good article about the Delano HS (Minn) hockey team feature Ben Meyers. With the regular season complete and sectional playoffs underway Meyers finished as the top scorer in Minnesota this year and is a finalist for Minnesota Mr. Hockey. Once the high school playoffs are complete there is the possibility he finishes out the year with Fargo (USHL). He will play a year of junior hockey prior to arriving in Orono.

I think Pappalardo and Hayes(should be able to graduate) definitely don't come back. The other candidates for me are Lacroix(another who could graduate), Perez, Gibson(not sure what the deal with him is), Shea(it is telling his brother decided to go elsewhere and there have been games where Shea has mysteriously not played), Cochrane, and Becker. Like you I'm very skeptical on Herner and wonder if he goes elsewhere without ever playing a game. Pieper and Hoglund are kind of a mystery to me why they were recruited. Hoglund looks okay but hasn't done much and can't see Pieper being much different.

Re: UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

Pappalardo is a freshman. He isn't graduating. Lacroix gets a ton of minutes, he is going nowhere. Perez, big body, red loves those guys. Shea is going to.play. Gibson, can't figure that out either.

Re: UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

Didn't hayes score some goals as a freshman, I thought he looked pretty good then. Hasn't done crap since.

Re: UMAINE Recruits Part 2: 2016/2017 and what follows

Another mystery team next season with what they have returning to play and the suspects as in incoming recruits are just that, until on the ice a-lot of ???marks. Until they shore up the goaltending and make the defense zone a defensive zone and not a turnover factory lose your confidence after giving up a goal with a lead then its more or less a team/program that has much-much work to do. This weekends games shows you they can play hard and play to win and at the same time you see the turnovers and lost of confidence on a goal...so fasten your seat belts for the roller coaster ride in quite might be in 2017-18 ( just imo ). Now 4 just the heck of it...BEAT Vermont in 3 games...(???maybe/maybe not?)

He was and from the sounds of it they (Coaching Staff) decided to hold him back and not lose a year of play. We shall see on Herner, could be a hidden diamond in the rough or another hit and miss. Like I said before, Mystery Team next season...

He brings nothing to the team/imo...has spunk and is willing to do the hard work, but don't expect scoring...nope. He's taking up a spot on the roster that could be used on a 2 way player...again only imo.

He scored 4 goals and had 2 assists. His penalties seem to be more memorable.

Sorry, I was only referring to Hayes. My post was a little unclear. Pappalardo is a D3 player.

Unless your name is Vesey, Lacroix, Robbins, Pearson, Shea, Fossier, Smith, Holway, Michel, Hamilton, or McGovern you may not be in Orono next year for various reasons.

I don't know if he is a D3 player but he sure looks lost out there. I thought he was supposed to be a scorer.

Im surprised Muehlbauer isn't on your list. Do you think there is a chance Herner and Doherty don't come back or were you not counting them where they didn't play this year?

Wow, short and too the point. None of the transfers make the team?, that seems unlikely. No one would ever transfer as long as Red is coach. No herner? that seems unlikely also. Housakous looks ok to me also. But its a matter of numbers so some folks have to go no doubt.
Muelbauer is back also

Not a bad nucleous. I might add Doherty, unless he decides to go.

Wasn't a list of who makes the team rather a list of who is a lock to be in Orono. In other words, every other player currently on the roster not on the list could be upgraded upon. no chance that someone comes in next year and routinely starts over them because if that was the case they would be looking to go elsewhere. If you are a lock to have a starting position than we can safely assume they are back in Orono.

If we want to talk about who makes the team than take those 11 + 13 newcomers + another 3 or 4 from this year's team. The 3 or 4 come from the pool of Gibson, Perez, Housakos, Hayes, Pappalardo, Becker, Cochrane, Muehlbauer. Of that list Housakos and Muehlbauer would be the more obvious ones to stick around. There a lot of wingers coming in next year so Gibson/Perez/Hayes/Pappalardo could be on the outside looking in or seeking greener pastures elsewhere. Ditto for Becker and Cochrane on the blueline. Will be interesting
