UMaine Offseason...Belly Up to the Barr Boys

Two years ago today Maine lost a second hockey coach, and I lost another mentor, to a medical catastrophe. I know people were disappointed in the results on the ice, but no one felt it more than him. After a particularly difficult loss in 2017 I saw him in the bowels of Alfond Arena leaning against a wall, staring at the ceiling, sadness and frustration etched on his face. He saw me and tried to change his expression but I'd already seen. Told him I remembered that feeling from Providence in '92 and assured him better days were ahead. There are many things that depress me about what would happen in March of 2020, but that the team was robbed of a chance at a Hockey East title and an NCAA tournament appearance is up there.

Thanks for everything, coach.

Jeremy Swayman pointed to the sky today from his net in Philly after the Bruins won their record-breaking 63rd game of the season. In his postgame interview, with some tears in his eyes, Swayman noted how much he owed his mentor, Red Gendron

The ‘02 loss to Minnesota in St. Paul just months after Shawn died is by far the worst loss as a sports fan. So any time Minnesota loses is a sweet day!

Seemed as though the fix was in, on what was essentially MN's home-ice that day... The OT officiating was, um, "suspect".

Since then, I've watched a ton of Minny games, and have relished every Goof loss.

Last night was particularly enjoyable, though.

Did we miss the boat on Dumais? I’ll be honest that I had zero interest in him and honestly wouldn’t have been happy if he was hired but maybe I was completely wrong. There definitely is some value in having a coach from Maine and it sounds like he is the real deal.

What is the value of having a coach from Maine ?? I think it means dogchit in the big picture. He isn't even an alum of the school, played at St. Doms but thats about it.

Josh and Bradley Nadeau were both 1st team All-Stars in the BCHL, and Ryan Hopkins was named a second team All-Star.

Here is a simple reason I just do not get this portal reasoning. Olson you picked Maine and then come there and want to leave after 1 year. Why? was it actually the only offer you received? now jump in the portal. Freshman year to Sophomore year is the huge jump for development, so why not wait and see what happens.. it's just dumb that the portal is a drug to keep jumping and jumping

He was the odd man out. Barr didn't like his play as the year went on and he got supplanted on the fourth line. My guess is he was told he was not in their plans or wouldn't get much playing time next year.

He got one goal in 24 games played. Your likely very correct in that assessment. Thats not really the future.

With the 2 Bentley guys, the Nadeaus and Calafiore, Maine are at 17 forwards. KKO didn't play much down the stretch. He suffers a little from being a center. That puts him behind Breen, Renwick and Hanson, leaving 4th line center. That's probably not a job he is suited to.

I'm surprised he didn't go to the portal earlier. He's a good player and will have offers.

I liked KKO, sad to see him go. Good guy on the dot, I thought he had a strong start to the year. Curious where he lands because I think he can be a valuable player.

Same feeling as me. I agree with what grooverider said as well, he was the odd man out. He was one of those guys where if he wasn’t getting top 6 minutes, his value couldn’t really be realized. Unfortunately, he wasn’t quite good enough to play those minutes this year especially with Breen and Renwick ahead of him centering those lines.

Hope he lands on his feet, he probably could have been an impact player in a couple years but as 21 year old Freshman, he’s expected to contribute right away.

Thanks Guys for your feedback, I originally thought maybe he was just leaving after 1 year on his own. Freshman get so much better after year 1, the player Jacob Quillan went from 9 point 4th line freshman to scoring the national championship goal his sophomore year. I am a huge recruit players especially overages and keep them for 4 years to build, their production will improve every year and so should their minutes
