UMaine Offseason...Belly Up to the Barr Boys

It was Mike Pomichter, not Jay Pandolfo:

Pomichter wasn't even supposed to be playing that night. He and Martin Mercier had been suspended for the game because they fought each other in the November game. Both Parker and Walsh appealed the decision and Hockey East relented.

Ben Barr is the real deal. Not that we didn’t already know this. Check out this weeks Spittin Chiclets Game Notes.

This is really good publicity for the program and for recruiting. I’ve never met him but you can tell he’s genuine.

I like the way he spoke about the program, it’s a work in progress but his goal is to have the team in the frozen four soon enough. He talked about year 3 being the one where you take the big leap so it seems like he has expectations for next year’s team.

I liked the story of him going to stay with his prior team mate roomie for a couple days after graduation and stayed for nine years.

Nothing presumptuous about Ben, just a regular guy, hard working, focused, determined, high energy. Met him once and comes across that way too. Perfect for umaine right now.

Well, I put it on YouTube, so I didn't find it.

That's been a loooong time.

I was at Killington that night, and we watched until it was (maybe) 6-2, Maine, then went out; we figured that deal was done. We were stunned to see the result later that night.

Still, that season had a very happy ending.

The only blemish on '93 was that game, and that's just another reason to hate BU, if Maine fans need yet another one.

:P

I was at the game, although at the end BU was defending (as that's where Maine put visiting team fans). It was a great night as a BU fan.

It was BU's second 4 goal comeback at Alfond in a row, as the cameback from 4-0 down to tie Maine 4-4 a year before on 31 January 1992 (I was also at that game).

Good times.

Ah yes, you were sitting under the metal bleachers (student section). Gets a little loud there with fans pounding there feet above you!! I had season tickets right next to the visitors section.

Grew up in Maine and was at that game at 11 years old. Quite a memorable season for me as a kid, starting with sitting on the bench with the underclassmen that season (Kariya and the Ferraro twins) for the Blue/White game, meeting Walsh and Gendron, and ending with the natty.

Funny enough, I ended up going to BU and am a die-hard Terrier fan. But I still pull for the Black Bears, as long as they’re not playing BU!

The ‘02 loss to Minnesota in St. Paul just months after Shawn died is by far the worst loss as a sports fan. So any time Minnesota loses is a sweet day!
